Paying in China: Alipay, WeChat Pay, cards and cash
For a trip to mainland China, prepare an eligible mobile-payment method before departure, keep a physical card where accepted and carry some renminbi cash as a separate backup. Alipay and Weixin Pay, commonly called WeChat Pay internationally, can charge a supported foreign bank card for everyday merchant purchases. Linking the card does not guarantee every payment or give access to every wallet function.
The most useful preparation is checking your own account, card issuer, verification messages and alternative for the first arrival. This guide was checked in October 2026 and concerns visitors' everyday spending in mainland China, not business transfers or a universal payment arrangement for Hong Kong and Macao.
Build a payment setup that fits your trip
Identify the expenses you must pay first: transport from arrival, accommodation and food. Confirm accepted payment for anything essential rather than assuming the same method works everywhere. A hotel deposit, a merchant purchase and a transfer to a person are different transactions.
Preparing the wider trip is more convenient in RoadMe: the app develops a personal plan around your interests, dates and pace. Try outlining the visits you want, then prepare payment and transport for the activities you actually expect to use.
| Method | Practical use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Alipay with a linked eligible foreign card | Supported everyday merchant purchases | Not a general person-to-person transfer or balance-top-up service |
| Weixin Pay with an eligible foreign card | Supported merchant purchases through WeChat | Account, card, merchant and current service rules apply |
| Physical bank card | Participating terminals and compatible ATMs | The issuer and displayed acceptance matter |
| Renminbi cash | Independent backup for suitable in-person payments | Does not complete every online-only purchase |
| Eligible home e-wallet | Participating cross-border wallet networks | Check the exact wallet, country, merchant and fees |
Two apps linked to the same card are not fully independent backups. If the issuer declines that card, changing the app may not solve the cause. Likewise, two apps on one flat-battery phone cannot replace cash or another suitable arrangement.
Set up the account before departure
Download the genuine service from your usual app store or the provider's official channel. Alipay and a partner home wallet are different products; do not install a similarly named app on the assumption that it follows the same terms. Weixin Pay operates within the appropriate WeChat service.
Use a mobile number you control and can access for verification. Official visitor guidance allows overseas or Chinese numbers; a mainland Chinese number is not a universal requirement for the foreign-card route. Receiving the app's code and authorising a bank's security check can be separate steps.
Keep your passport and your own eligible bank card ready. Complete the identity checks requested for your account through the service itself. The required review depends on the actual setup and function: do not assume registration alone provides every limit or that someone else's verification screenshot proves your account is ready.
Add the card using the current bank-card section and follow issuer authentication. Check the cardholder details, expiry and requested information carefully. A familiar Visa or Mastercard logo is not a promise that every issuing bank, card or transaction will be supported.
Before travel, make sure you can sign in, find the payment tools and reach support. Some merchant payment scenarios can only be confirmed when available at the destination. Do not manufacture a transfer to a stranger as a “test”; that can be a different function from the merchant payment you need.
Keep access to the registered number and bank messages during the trip. A data-only travel connection does not necessarily receive SMS sent to another number. Plan how to receive required confirmations, and keep the phone charged without treating connectivity as a guarantee of payment acceptance.

Paying by QR code: two different actions
For one common method, open the app's scanning function and scan the merchant's collection code. Check the displayed recipient and amount before authorising. Where you enter the price yourself, confirm it with the merchant instead of assuming that scanning has already paid.
For the other method, open your own dynamic payment code for the merchant to scan. This is different from scanning a shop's code and different again from sending a screenshot to someone. Use the payment code inside the genuine app and keep it under your control.
Check which card or funding source the transaction will use. If several are linked, the default might differ from your intention. Read the payment result and let the merchant confirm receipt before leaving. An open app, a scanned code or a bank notification on its own does not always show a completed merchant transaction.
If a code leads to a personal transfer instead of an eligible merchant payment, do not assume the foreign card supports it. Ask for the appropriate merchant payment method or another accepted option. A merchant accepting an app does not make every feature of that app available to every visitor.
Understand fees before confirming
The ordinary foreign-card guidance waives the platform service fee on individual payments of CNY 200 or less. Above CNY 200, a 3% service fee can apply to the full payment amount, subject to the current payment page and any eligible promotion. It is not calculated only on the portion above the threshold.
For an illustrative purchase of CNY 300 with the ordinary 3% fee applied, the platform fee is CNY 9 and the total is CNY 309 before any separate issuer charges. This is an explanation of the calculation, not a real shop price or a promise of the charge on your account.
The wallet fee is separate from the exchange rate and any foreign-currency or other fee charged by your bank. Alipay's guidance states that the card network and issuer determine the foreign-card exchange rate. Review the completed card statement for the actual home-currency amount.
A direct card payment at a terminal avoids that particular wallet route, but does not guarantee a fee-free purchase: your issuer's terms still apply. Compare the actual total and accepted methods for a large bill. Do not ask a merchant to misrepresent or artificially structure transactions to bypass the service rules.
Weixin Pay's newer first-use offer
Tencent's May 2026 announcement describes a 90-consecutive-day waiver of international-card processing fees for eligible first-time users linking an international card, starting from the first transaction and covering spending up to CNY 1,000 per day. Older guidance still describes a 60-day offer.
Check the benefit displayed for your own account, including eligibility, start, remaining allowance and applicable terms. A first trip to China is not necessarily the first qualifying card linkage. Do not assume an old account or every transaction qualifies simply because the announcement mentions visitors.
The offer concerns the specified processing fee. It does not cancel your bank's exchange costs, make every merchant payable or remove identity and transaction restrictions. Do not transfer its conditions to Alipay or a separate home wallet.
Limits are another question. Older official pages list different thresholds for different account arrangements and dates. The applicable amount depends on verification, service, issuer and transaction. Check the actual account and payment page instead of treating one published maximum as a guaranteed personal allowance.

Linking a card does not mean loading a general wallet
For the visitor foreign-card purchase route, the app can charge the linked card for an eligible merchant transaction. This is distinct from topping up a wallet balance in advance. Do not look for a general “load money” step merely because an old guide shows a different prepaid product.
Alipay's international-card guidance excludes person-to-person transfers, sending or receiving red packets and certain financial services from that route. A payment failure in one of those functions does not necessarily mean that an ordinary merchant purchase is impossible.
Weixin's international-card route also has function-specific conditions. A request to send money to an individual should not be treated as the same transaction as paying a business. Avoid accounts, cards or identity information supplied by someone offering an unofficial setup service.
Eligible home wallets connected through Alipay+ or Weixin's cross-border network provide another route. Their terms belong to that particular wallet and integration. A statement about no extra network fee for a partner wallet cannot automatically be applied to a foreign bank card linked inside Alipay.
Why cash remains useful
Renminbi cash remains a legitimate payment method. The cash-service rules effective from February 2026 require support for cash in specified face-to-face and staffed-payment situations, subject to legal exceptions. They distinguish these from services where the entire transaction, payment and delivery are online.
That distinction matters in practice: having cash does not complete an app-only booking by itself. Ask a staffed venue what cash procedure is available and confirm it before depending on the service. If a payment difficulty arises, focus first on obtaining a clear accepted way to settle the actual bill.
Carry a usable mix of denominations rather than making one large note the only option for a small purchase. Keep the reserve separate from the phone. Choose the amount around essential expenses and access to replenishment, not a universal daily sum that ignores your accommodation and transport arrangements.
For exchange, use a bank or licensed exchange service and check the rate, any fees, opening arrangements and required document. Retain the exchange receipt if you may need it later. Do not hand a stranger a passport and cash for an unverified exchange or wallet top-up offer.
For ATM withdrawals, look for your card network's acceptance and check both ATM and issuer fees and limits. A logo indicates the route to investigate, not guaranteed success for every card. Keep the physical card, and do not assume a phone wallet alone enables every cash withdrawal.
If payment fails, avoid paying twice
Stop and read the result before repeating the transaction. Check the app's order record and ask the merchant whether payment arrived. A pending authorisation, a completed debit and an unsuccessful app screen can require clarification rather than another immediate payment.
Then check the cause: connectivity, verification, selected funding source, issuer approval, account limit or unsupported transaction type. If necessary, contact the relevant provider through the app or your bank's known contact channel. Repeated identical attempts do not fix an ineligible card.
Use an accepted alternative once the first payment's status is understood. Keep both references if a duplicate charge needs investigation. For a refund, distinguish the merchant accepting the request from the money actually returning; method, processing time and fees follow the relevant transaction terms.
Save essential order information privately, but do not post your payment code, passport or card data in a public help group. A person claiming to be support should not receive passwords or one-time authorisation codes. Enter necessary details only in the legitimate service's intended form.
Prepare the first arrival and the rest of the day
Before departure, confirm how the first transfer and accommodation payment will work, keep the original documents available and check phone power and access to messages. Plan an alternative that remains usable if the app or issuer refuses a transaction.
RoadMe makes it easier to turn your available time into a personal plan of visits and breaks, instead of rebuilding each day from scattered suggestions. Try setting your interests and pace before the trip, leaving room to resolve arrival tasks without crowding out the places you want to enjoy.
For the next intercity journey, see booking China train tickets with a foreign passport. For the first city connection, the guide to transport from Beijing's Capital and Daxing airports helps distinguish the two airports and their services; verify payment for the actual option selected.

The useful final check is simple: genuine app, accessible number, required verification completed, eligible card, current fees understood and an independent reserve. Prepare those elements before relying on the phone for every essential expense.
