de Young and Legion of Honor Tickets: How Two-Museum Admission Works

A general admission ticket for the de Young Museum also provides general admission to the Legion of Honor on the same day. This is the useful starting point when choosing between the two Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. It does not mean two visits on different dates, and it does not automatically include every special exhibition in both buildings.

The museums are in different parks: de Young in Golden Gate Park, Legion of Honor in Lincoln Park. Choose the collection or exhibition you most want to see first, then decide whether a second museum fits your time and energy. A second included entrance is an option, not a reason to rush the first visit.

Choose the art first, then the ticket

For American art and collections from Africa, Oceania and the Americas, start by looking at de Young. For European painting, sculpture and decorative arts, look at the Legion of Honor. Check the current exhibition programme when a particular artist is the reason for your trip: that may change which ticket you need.

Try RoadMe to work out a complete personal trip around your interests and preferred pace. In the app, it is easier to give the museums the time they deserve and fit the rest of San Francisco around the experience you actually want.

Write down a simple priority: a collection, a named exhibition or the building itself. Someone interested mainly in the de Young observation tower has a different purchase decision from someone coming for a ticketed show. Do not buy a more elaborate package until you know what it adds.

The important words are general admission and same day. Keep those words when comparing a reseller's translated description. A heading such as combined museum experience can describe the ordinary reciprocal arrangement, a special exhibition product or a wider city bundle. The heading alone does not establish the contents.

Same day means the same visiting date

Do not interpret the second entrance as a credit you can use later in the week. If you visit de Young on one date and want Legion of Honor on the following date, price that second visit on its own terms. A multi-day city pass has its own validity rules and does not automatically rewrite the museum inclusion.

Keep the original ticket and confirmation accessible after the first visit. At the second museum, show the ticket and ask staff how its same-day entitlement is recognised. A receipt, a payment notification and an admission barcode are different documents; save the document that actually carries the admission.

You also cannot treat one person's ticket as a spare ticket for another person at the other building. The arrangement concerns that visitor's admission to both museums. Select the correct number of visitors and check the categories for each member of the party.

Special exhibitions: read the exact name

General admission should not be assumed to include a separately ticketed exhibition. The booking option should identify the show you want, its date and any timed entry. A photograph of an exhibition on a ticket seller's page does not by itself make that exhibition part of a general ticket.

If you buy an exhibition ticket at one museum, read whether its terms also include the general collection and reciprocal general admission. Even where those are included, access to a different paid exhibition at the other museum is a separate question. Do not turn two-museum general access into a promise of two paid shows.

For two named exhibitions, compare the actual options for those two shows. Check each time slot and allow for travel between the buildings. If the combination is not clearly described, ask the museum before paying rather than buying duplicate general admission just in case.

Two parks, two arrivals

de Young is at 50 Hagiwara Tea Garden Drive in Golden Gate Park. Legion of Honor is at 100 34th Avenue in Lincoln Park. They are not two wings of the same building, and the names of the parks are not interchangeable.

Search the destination by its full museum name when checking transport. Do not use the first museum's address for the second booking. A hotel journey, a transfer between museums and the return journey are three separate movements that need to fit the available day.

There is no universally reliable transfer time to print for every visitor. Starting point, traffic, service changes and walking requirements all matter. Check the actual journey for the date, then leave time for reaching the entrance and completing any entry procedure.

Opening hours and the earlier tower closure

The regular published museum hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:30–17:15; Mondays are normally closed. Check the individual date for holidays, exceptional opening or a private event before fixing the rest of your day around these hours.

The de Young's Hamon Observation Tower has an earlier published closing time of 16:30. It does not share the full gallery opening period. If the tower matters to your visit, do not leave it until the last part of the afternoon simply because the museum itself is still open.

Closing time also differs from the last admission and from the starting time on an exhibition ticket. Read those limits separately. A late slot for one building is not evidence that you can still enter the other building afterwards.

The free tower is a different choice

San Francisco Travel states that the Hamon Observation Tower does not require an admission ticket. The museum store and certain public spaces are also described as accessible without gallery admission. This does not make the permanent galleries or a ticketed exhibition free at every hour.

If your only aim is the view, check the tower's current access and hours before purchasing a gallery ticket. If you also want the art, choose admission for the galleries you intend to visit. Treat a drink or a purchase in the store as separate spending.

Accessibility to a free area does not imply that every event in that area is included without booking. Read the listing for a specific talk, performance or workshop if it is the main reason you are going.

Free first Tuesdays and eligibility-based offers

General admission at both museums is free on the first Tuesday of each month. The distinction from a special exhibition remains important: free general entry is not a blanket promise of free access to every show. Check the date and the relevant ticket option before arrival.

Other free or reduced programmes may depend on age, residence, membership or a particular benefit. Free Saturdays are described as a Bay Area resident programme, rather than free admission for every tourist. Verify current eligibility and the proof required; staying in a hotel is not evidence of local residence.

For children, students and older visitors, use the category in the museum's current booking process. Where documentation is requested, bring the accepted proof. A discounted adult category or free general admission does not automatically establish the treatment of a special exhibition.

Why a single fixed price can mislead

Ticket listings can show different amounts because they refer to different dates, exhibitions, age groups or booking channels. Some pages also retain an older tariff. For this guide, the decisive comparison is what admission includes; confirm the payable amount for your actual party in the current booking process.

Read the final total, the currency, any booking charge and the cancellation terms before payment. A foreign-currency amount displayed by a reseller is not necessarily the museum's local tariff, and your card provider may apply its own conversion.

For a family, compare the whole party rather than multiplying the first advertised adult amount. If one visitor qualifies for a reduction and another does not, their correct tickets may differ. Save the breakdown so you can see which admission each person holds.

If you already have a city pass

CityPASS lists same-day general admission to both museums for its relevant San Francisco products. Check your own purchased product and its current instructions before buying an extra museum ticket. A pass from another city or an older product name is not interchangeable.

Go City has its own museum redemption procedure. Its published instructions describe exchanging the pass for the next available timed ticket and state that pass holders cannot make an advance reservation through that process. Apply this to Go City, not to every museum ticket sold online.

A city pass can be useful across several attractions, but the museum alone does not establish its value. Compare only attractions you genuinely plan to visit. Also check whether admission at these two museums counts together under your actual pass, rather than guessing from the number of buildings.

Give one museum enough time

A practical approach is to reserve a substantial part of the day for your main interest, then keep the other museum optional. This is planning advice, not an official minimum visit length. People read labels, listen to audio and take breaks at different speeds.

Two museums are more plausible when you start early, have a clear focus and leave a generous transfer allowance. They are less comfortable when a fixed exhibition slot falls late in the afternoon or someone in the group needs frequent rests.

Our guide to queues and advance reservations explains how to protect time around bookings. A reciprocal entrance helps with admission cost; it does not remove queues, security procedures or the effort of moving across the city.

Audio, access and practical preparation

A free Bloomberg Connects guide is listed for the museums, with audio, information and maps. Bring your own headphones if you plan to listen on your phone. Check the available language and specific exhibition content rather than assuming that every text has a complete translated audio version.

If someone needs a wheelchair, interpretation or another access arrangement, contact the museum before the visit. Published access services can require notice or an appointment. Mention both buildings if you are planning both; an arrangement made at one site should not be assumed to transfer automatically.

Travel with a manageable bag and check current cloakroom, photography and security rules. A paid ticket does not bypass those rules. Avoid relying on a reseller's broad wheelchair-accessible label for a very specific personal requirement.

A little context helps you choose

The current copper-clad de Young building opened in 2005, bringing art and the Golden Gate Park landscape together. Its twisting tower is part of the architectural experience. That setting differs from the Legion of Honor's classical building and European art collection in Lincoln Park.

At the Legion of Honor, Rodin's work provides a useful point of interest for a sculpture-focused visitor. At de Young, American painting, textiles or art from other regions may be the reason to stay longer. Collections rotate, so check the current location and display status of a particular work.

The useful question is which experience you want to remember, not how many admission scans you can complete. Our independent trip planning guide helps connect that decision with accommodation, transport and the rest of the stay.

With RoadMe, it is more convenient to work out the whole personalised trip around your interests, time and pace. Plan the stay in the app, then choose museum tickets that fit the experience rather than forcing the day around an extra entrance.

Before paying

Confirm the museum, date, visitor categories and the exact exhibition name if relevant. Check whether the ticket includes general admission to the other museum on that same date, and keep the second building's hours in view.

Then check the final amount, redemption instructions and cancellation policy for the actual seller. Keep the ticket available after the first entrance. If you choose only one museum, the unused reciprocal entry does not make the visit a failure: you have still bought time with the collection you came to see.
