China train tickets: booking on 12306 with a foreign passport
You can buy a domestic train ticket in China with a valid foreign passport through the official Railway 12306 service or at a staffed railway ticket counter. Online registration, identity verification, payment and ticket issuance are separate steps. Travel with the original valid document used for the booking; an itinerary sheet or payment receipt does not replace it.
This guide concerns ordinary domestic rail travel with a foreign passport, checked in October 2026. International trains, border-crossing services and unusual replacement documents require their own rules. The practical goal is an issued ticket for the right passenger, date and station, rather than merely a successful account registration.
Choose the journey before opening the booking form
Write down the departure station, arrival station, travel date and acceptable arrival time. Cities can have several major railway stations. Shanghai, Shanghai Hongqiao and Shanghai South are different departure points; choosing the city name alone is not enough to arrange your transfer to the train.
RoadMe makes the wider trip easier to prepare: the app develops a personal day-by-day plan around your interests, dates and pace. Try shaping your visits first, then book the rail journeys that fit the time you want in each city.
Compare the full day, not only the time inside the train. Include reaching the station, identity and security checks, finding the boarding gate and travelling onwards after arrival. A shorter rail journey can be less convenient if the stations are far from your accommodation or the arrival leaves an awkward final connection.
For a timed attraction, allow room between arrival and the visit. Do not build a tight connection around an unissued ticket or a request awaiting confirmation. Keep the first day's activities flexible until the actual transport is secured.
| Channel | Useful when | Check before committing |
|---|---|---|
| Official 12306 website or app | You want to manage the booking directly | Account and passenger verification, payment acceptance, issued-ticket status |
| Staffed station ticket counter | You need help with the document or online process | Original passport, opening arrangements and actual seat availability |
| Separate booking platform | You prefer its interface or support | Full price, service terms, issuance deadline and who handles changes |
Register and verify the actual passenger
Use the official Railway 12306 service and select the appropriate foreign-passport document type. The English website is an option for eligible foreign passports. Enter the requested personal and contact information according to the channel's current instructions; menus and available functions can differ between the website and app.
Account activation is not identity verification. The official registration guide describes contact confirmation, including an email activation route, separately from checking the passport. If your chosen channel asks for a code or activation, finish that step using contact details you can access during the journey.
Then check the identity status of both the registered user and the passenger being booked. A person organising the journey may buy for someone else, but the ticket still needs the traveller's own accurate identity information. Completing your account does not automatically verify every accompanying passenger.
If automatic checking fails, compare the saved details with the original passport before resubmitting. Official guidance provides a passport-photo review route and an in-person ticket-counter route. Follow the requirements actually displayed for the user or passenger concerned; they need not ask for exactly the same photographs.
The official guide describes manual review taking several working days. Treat that as a reason to prepare early, not a guaranteed completion deadline. A pending review is not evidence of an issued ticket. If departure is close, arrange time for a staffed-counter enquiry rather than repeatedly submitting unchanged details.

Enter passport details without guessing
Use the passport you will actually carry. Check the document type, nationality, passport number, name, birth date and expiry wherever requested. The person, the booking record and the original document must correspond. A correct payment made for the wrong passenger does not solve an identity mismatch.
Follow the fields and current passport-entry help for the channel you are using. A single full-name field is not the same as separate surname and given-name boxes. Retain the order and spacing required by the form and the document; do not invent a nickname, translate the name into Chinese or replace it with the account owner's name.
For a long name, several given names, an unfamiliar character or a document-number ambiguity, consult the current entry instructions or ask the counter. Older guides describe different field limits. Do not cut off a name or remove spaces simply because an old article prescribed that for another form.
Check visually similar characters in the passport number, especially letters and digits. Review the saved passenger record once more before paying. If you renew or replace the passport after buying, obtain the railway's instructions for the existing booking; do not assume a photograph of the old passport makes the new document interchangeable.
Upload identity photographs only through the official verification procedure or a booking service whose terms you deliberately accept. A person offering to “unlock” the account in a message does not need your password or verification codes. Keep control of the contact address through which you will manage the order.
When tickets go on sale
The ordinary advance-sales window is 15 days including the current day. It is not an instruction to subtract 15 full days from departure without checking the calendar. Station-specific release times can differ, including between stations in the same city; check the actual departure station in the current 12306 release information.
If the date is beyond ordinary sales, an empty result is not proof that every seat has sold. If sales have opened, availability can still change before payment and issuance. Look at the selected date, station, train and class rather than treating one unsuccessful search as the result for the whole journey.
There are limited advance-reservation trials outside the ordinary sales window. An official September 2026 notice describes the Beijing–Shanghai corridor pilot shifting to requests 17–30 days ahead from 27 October, with a transition beforehand. This is a separate reservation service, not a universal change making all domestic tickets available 30 days ahead.
Where an advance request or waitlist is offered, read its eligibility, fulfilment and cancellation terms in the service. Do not treat submitting a request as a confirmed seat. Keep a practical alternative until the issued-ticket status is clear, particularly when accommodation depends on reaching another city.
Check the train, class and final amount before paying
Select the exact train and compare departure and arrival times, total duration, station names and available seat or berth classes. The shortest displayed ride is not automatically the best option. A later arrival can change the transfer and accommodation arrangements even if the train fare is attractive.
Review all passengers before submitting the order. A preference for a window or adjacent seats is not a guarantee of allocation. Once issued, check the actual carriage, seat or berth shown. If remaining together is essential, examine the result rather than relying only on the preference you entered.
China's official visitor guidance describes Chinese and foreign bank cards and mobile-payment options, subject to the accepted channel and payment signage. Your card's issuer and settings still matter. Check the available methods in the transaction; no general statement about international cards guarantees that every individual card will succeed.
For a counter purchase, the official guidance also lists renminbi cash. Online, complete payment within the deadline actually shown. Do not invent a universal payment countdown from an old screenshot. If a payment attempt produces an unclear result, inspect the order and completed bank transaction before trying another purchase.
Separate the railway fare from a platform's additional service products, insurance or booking fee. There is no single fixed fare for “a train in China”: the route, train, class and date matter. Compare equivalent trains and terms rather than publishing an illustrative amount as a price you can obtain.

Confirm that a ticket has actually been issued
Before treating the booking as finished, find the completed ticket record. Check passenger, document, train number, date, departure and arrival stations, carriage, seat or berth, and payment status. Save the order reference and the journey details somewhere accessible if you need staff assistance.
An acknowledgement of a request, a pending order, a bank authorisation and a rail ticket are different records. A platform may accept an advance request before it can obtain a seat. Look for its actual issuance result and the terms for a request that cannot be fulfilled.
With an electronic rail ticket, the original valid identity document used for purchase is the boarding credential under the railway's rules. The itinerary sheet helps you remember the journey; it is not itself a substitute ticket. Keeping a copy of the details is useful, but it does not remove the need for the original document.
If someone else books for you, obtain the final ticket information and know where to request help. A buyer's account can contain several passengers; that does not make all their bookings interchangeable. Do not share a friend's passport details or travel using a ticket issued in their name.
At the station: passport, security and the correct gate
Bring the original passport used for the ticket and keep it available until you have exited at the destination. Official guidance provides automatic or staffed checking channels. If the reader does not process the foreign passport, ask for the staffed route rather than assuming that the ticket is invalid or repeatedly blocking the gate.
Allow time for document checking, security, the waiting area and reaching the boarding gate. Stations stop checking passengers before the train's departure, with the cutoff announced locally. Being inside the station at the departure minute is not the same as having completed boarding.
Do not rely on a universal arrival allowance for every station. A first visit, holiday demand, assistance needs or a document enquiry can require more time. Check current instructions and leave a useful margin. If you need accessible help, request the station's actual arrangement rather than assuming every entrance works equally.
Match the train number and destination on the current departure information with your ticket, then follow the announced gate. Platform and gate information can change. A travel illustration or a screenshot from a previous day is not a live boarding instruction.
China's railway rules require cooperation with security checks and restrict certain items. Check the railway baggage and prohibited-item rules before packing. Airline liquid and battery habits do not establish the railway rule; a detailed luggage decision deserves the current list rather than a copied universal limit.
Children, changes and bookings through another service
For accompanied domestic travel under the ordinary rules, children aged six to under fourteen need a child-discount ticket; from fourteen they need the full fare. One paying adult may accompany one child under six without a separate seat free of charge. Declare the free child when booking and carry the child's required document.
A child under six using a separate seat needs the appropriate child ticket; additional under-six children with the same paying adult also need the appropriate fare. Age is assessed on the travel date. Do not use an old height-based table as the rule for these ordinary real-name tickets.
If plans change, open the actual order promptly and compare the available amendment or refund options before cancelling. Availability, the time remaining, the new travel date and previous changes can affect the result. The railway rules allow one ordinary amendment subject to their conditions; it is not unlimited flexible travel.
For an agency booking, check its own handling and service fees as well as the railway conditions. Do not assume 12306 will resolve an agency payment problem or that a platform's support product changes the railway's identity requirements. Keep the order and contact channel used to purchase.
Connect the rail journey with the rest of the trip
Secure the important train first, then check how the arrival station connects with your accommodation and intended visits. After a late arrival, confirm access to the room; after an early one, confirm when the room is available. Avoid turning arrival day into a sequence of bookings with no recovery time.
RoadMe helps turn the time left after travel into a personal plan for exploring at your own pace. Try arranging nearby visits and breaks together, while checking train reservations and current local connections separately with their operators.
Our guide to public transport tickets and validation abroad helps with the city connection. For a late arrival, prepare your transfer and access to the accommodation before assuming the journey is finished when the train stops.

Before leaving, make one final check: issued ticket, correct station and date, original passport, required child registration, accepted payment completed, current boarding information and enough time for the station procedure. These checks are more useful than collecting screenshots of every button in an interface that may change.
