Swiss Panoramic Trains: Choosing a Service and Extra Costs

A Swiss panoramic train is a particular travel product, not simply any train passing mountains. The branded service, the railway line and the ticket covering the journey are three different things. That distinction explains why a Swiss Travel Pass can cover the fare while a seat reservation or class upgrade still costs extra.

Choose the experience around your existing holiday rather than adding every famous train to a checklist. This guide compares Glacier Express, Bernina Express, GoldenPass options and Gotthard Panorama Express using operator information researched on 26 October 2026. It also explains when a regional train is a useful alternative.

Which panoramic train should you choose?

Consider Glacier Express for a substantial, reserved Alpine rail experience; Bernina Express for the Albula/Bernina railway experience with an Italian endpoint; GoldenPass Express for a direct connection between Interlaken Ost and Montreux; and Gotthard Panorama Express for its seasonal combination of lake boat and historic mountain railway. Then check the exact departure, section, class and reservations. The famous name alone does not describe the product in your basket.

Glacier Express: fare plus compulsory seat reservation

Glacier Express requires both a valid ticket for the selected section and class and a compulsory seat reservation. Holding a pass does not remove the reservation. Conversely, buying a seat alone does not create a valid fare if you have no qualifying ticket or pass for that date.

The operator accepts Swiss Travel Pass for the covered journey, with the compulsory reservation paid separately. Match the class: first-class seating requires an appropriate first-class travel entitlement. Excellence Class is a distinct premium product with its own conditions, not a free move into a quieter seat.

Search the actual origin and destination. A booking for part of the route does not include every landmark shown in a full-length promotional film. Likewise, a full journey may consume most of a day when the access and onward connection are added. Do not schedule it as if it were a short ride between two nearby attractions.

Do not buy on a promise of one universally correct side or direction of travel. The operator says changes of direction prevent a guaranteed forward-facing orientation throughout. Landscapes also change sides. Choose the available seating and company you want rather than paying a seller for an unsupported perfect-view guarantee.

Bernina Express and regional trains: same line, different product

The panoramic coaches of Bernina Express require a valid fare and an obligatory reservation. A normal regional train on the Bernina Line is another product, even when a seller loosely calls both a red train. Check the service name, departure and coach type in the booking.

RhB explicitly distinguishes the regional trains from Bernina Express: the regional service does not provide the same panoramic coaches or additional branded services. It uses the regular timetable and can offer more opportunities across the day. The landscape along a shared section is not exclusive to a branded carriage.

There is an important current nuance. RhB offers optional reservations on regional trains between St. Moritz and Tirano for CHF 5 per person. The operator recommends them because demand can be high. Saying regional trains can never be reserved is therefore misleading.

Only a limited number of regional seats are offered for reservation. If that allocation is exhausted, RhB says travel without a reservation remains possible, although longer waits may occur during busy periods. “No reservable seats left” and “no possible regional travel” are not identical statements.

Optional regional reservations do not turn those coaches into Bernina Express. If large panoramic windows and the branded onboard offer are the reason for your journey, book that actual product. If flexible travel along the line is more important, compare the regional option and its real connections.

Check whether the chosen service begins at Chur or St. Moritz and which section you actually ride. A shorter Bernina journey does not automatically contain the Albula section and Landwasser Viaduct. The viaduct's stone arches and the railway curving into the cliff are engineering features of a particular place, not a backdrop promised on every red-train ticket.

Tirano is in Italy. Bring travel documents and check the entry requirements applicable to your situation before selecting a cross-border journey. A Swiss transport pass is a travel product, not an immigration document or permission to enter another country.

GoldenPass Express is not GoldenPass Panoramic

GoldenPass Express links Interlaken Ost and Montreux directly. BLS describes approximately three hours and fifteen minutes for that full connection. The direct service is useful if avoiding a change matters, but check the departure actually labelled GoldenPass Express.

For individual travellers in first or second class, a reservation is recommended rather than universally compulsory. Prestige has compulsory reservation and separate premium conditions. A recommendation can still be valuable on a fixed date or for companions who want to sit together; it should not be presented as a rule applying to every class.

Prestige is more than a normal second-class reservation with an attractive name. Check the required fare class and the premium supplement before purchase. A seller displaying a seat supplement is not necessarily displaying the complete cost of travelling in that class.

GoldenPass Panoramic is the Montreux–Gstaad–Zweisimmen product described by MOB. It is not simply another name for the direct Interlaken–Montreux GoldenPass Express. Its individual reservation recommendation, onboard offer and route need to be read on its own terms.

If a search result says only GoldenPass, inspect both endpoints and the train name. A combination with regional connections may make a perfectly good journey, but it is different from a single direct panoramic service. Compare changes and total travel time before paying for the label.

Gotthard Panorama Express: boat, season and first class

This experience combines Lake Lucerne travel with a panoramic train over the historic Gotthard mountain route towards Ticino. It is not the same as simply taking a fast train through the base tunnel. The boat and mountain railway are part of the reason to choose it.

The panoramic rail section offers first class. Someone with a second-class pass needs the appropriate upgrade as well as the reservation supplement. A pass covering the route does not authorise first-class travel without resolving that difference.

SBB's published information for the 2026 season states a CHF 24 reservation supplement for the panoramic train, alongside a valid first-class ticket. The supplement alone is not the complete boat-and-rail fare. The published 2026 operating season ran from 18 April to 18 October; do not apply those dates to a later year or assume the branded service runs in late October.

The boat segment has its own boarding and seating arrangements; a reserved train seat does not reserve a particular place on the vessel. Check which components your booking includes and allow a realistic connection at the transfer point.

Switzerland Tourism identifies Treno Gottardo as a year-round alternative over the historic route. It is a different scheduled product, not a promise that the seasonal panoramic package, boat connection and onboard service continue unchanged all winter.

What Swiss Travel Pass covers, and what it does not settle

For the qualifying routes, Swiss Travel Pass can cover the underlying transport fare. The selected date, class and service still matter. A Flex product requires the relevant travel day to be valid; merely owning the pass is not enough to establish today's coverage.

Make separate lines in the budget for the fare, seat reservation, premium supplement, class upgrade, meals and any connecting transport. A Swiss Half Fare Card is a discount entitlement for eligible tickets, not the same thing as a pass covering the fare. Do not put those products in one “already paid” category.

Our guide to Swiss Travel Pass versus Swiss Half Fare Card covers the wider purchase calculation. Here the question is narrower: after selecting a train, which parts of this particular journey still need buying?

Ask the booking system for the correct pass or discount option. If you already have a valid fare, choose reservation-only where available rather than unknowingly paying the base fare twice. Before departure, keep the actual travel entitlement and reservation accessible together.

Calculate the full additional cost

Start from the fare you really need, not an advertised supplement. For two travellers choosing the optional CHF 5 regional reservation between St. Moritz and Tirano, the reservations total CHF 10. That arithmetic does not include their rail fares, any class difference or travel to the departure station.

For Gotthard Panorama Express, multiply the applicable reservation supplement by the travellers who need it, then resolve the first-class ticket requirement and boat portion. Do not compare that total with a regional ticket that ends at another place or omits the vessel.

Meals are another separate question. Some premium products include specified catering, while ordinary seats may offer paid food. A table in a promotional photograph does not establish that lunch is included. Check the actual booking description, dietary arrangements and available service before relying on it.

Season, daylight and the view

Operating and visibility are different questions. A train can run in cloud, rain or snow while the distant mountains are hidden. A winter photograph does not guarantee snow on your date; a summer timetable does not confirm every optional mountain walk beside the line.

Check the full seasonal calendar for the named product and the available daylight during the intended section. Some trains have maintenance gaps or different departures by season. The separate guide to the best time to visit Switzerland explains the broader contrast between valley conditions and mountain access.

Leave breathing room around the reserved journey. Arriving from another region immediately before departure creates a different risk from sleeping nearby. If scenery is the main reason for travelling, review weather and the actual ticket-change terms before buying an inflexible arrangement.

For photographs through glass, expect reflections and passing obstructions. Do not assume every panoramic window opens. Keep equipment inside unless the operator explicitly provides an approved photography arrangement, and do not block other passengers' view or the aisle.

Children, luggage and accessibility

Check each passenger's fare entitlement and reservation separately. A child entitled to a free rail fare may still need a paid reservation for their own seat on a panoramic service. Family documentation and premium-class conditions can differ; calculate the actual household rather than multiplying one adult offer.

Bring manageable luggage and confirm storage limits for your product. Panoramic sightseeing is less relaxing when a large case blocks legroom or access. If changing trains or continuing to a boat, include handling time and the practical route between platforms and boarding points.

For wheelchair travel or other access requirements, contact the relevant operator before booking the seat. A panoramic carriage on a website does not confirm that the selected departure, toilet, boarding location and connection meet your needs.

Keep the railway day balanced with the rest of the trip. In supported cities, RoadMe develops a personalised plan around your interests, time and pace. It is more convenient to build a coherent holiday in the app than add demanding journeys just because they are famous.

Before paying, check these details

  • Exact train name, departure stations, date and travel class.
  • Whether the purchase is a fare, a reservation, a supplement or a package.
  • Pass validity and any class upgrade needed for the selected coach.
  • Compulsory versus optional reservation, including the regional Bernina distinction.
  • Seasonal operation, connections, luggage and passenger-specific requirements.

Then choose the train that fits your holiday, not the longest list of brands. One well-placed panoramic experience can be more enjoyable than several tightly connected reserved journeys with no time left to explore their destinations.
