Luggage Storage in Chicago: Union Station, the Loop and Storage Conditions

9 min read

Traveller considering luggage storage before an onward journey

In Chicago, compare Union Station's staffed parcel check with a city storage point in the Loop or near your actual departure. Amtrak currently distinguishes passengers with a valid Amtrak ticket from the general public, who need valid photo ID. A partner advertised as “Union Station luggage storage” may be outside the station, with its own address and opening hours.

Do not confuse temporary storage with checking a bag onto a train or using the Metropolitan Lounge. Those services have different conditions. The useful choice depends on where you will collect the suitcase, how many items you have and how much time remains before the next fixed departure.

Choose from the return for your bags

Start with the actual station, airport or bus stop for the onward journey and the required arrival time. Work backwards through collection and the trip from storage. That creates a realistic end to the free part of the day.

Try RoadMe to work out the whole personal trip around your interests and pace. Planning the complete stay in the app is more convenient, including a Chicago day that leaves proper time for luggage collection and the next connection.

A point near the hotel in the morning can require a long return later. Compare it with storage near the place you will actually leave from. Include the walk to drop off as well as the later collection, rather than judging only the advertised price.

The comparison was checked on 28 October 2026. These are options to evaluate, not promises of free space for a particular arrival. A twenty-four-hour tariff period is also different from twenty-four-hour access to a staffed counter.

Union Station has a real parcel-check service

Union Station's official information identifies baggage storage through parcel check. Its Amtrak section places the combined ticketing and baggage service in the centre of the Concourse, near the baggage carousel. Use current signs or ask staff for temporary bag storage.

This is a staffed service. Do not arrive expecting an available bank of coin-operated self-service lockers from an old map. A baggage room and a luggage carousel also have different functions, even when they are near one another.

Have the actual ticket, if claiming the Amtrak passenger rate, or valid photo identification for the general-public category. Ask which receipt or claim check must be retained for collection. Keep it somewhere other than inside the bag you are leaving.

Allow time for handover and return. You still need to reach the correct boarding area afterwards. Finishing a city visit at the train's departure time does not leave time to retrieve the suitcase and board.

The current Amtrak rate is not the old ten-dollar price

Amtrak's current general baggage-services page lists US$20 per item for each twenty-four-hour period for customers with a valid Amtrak ticket. It lists US$30 per item for the general public with valid photo ID. The next applicable period is charged when it begins.

The station's local summary displays US$20 per bag without setting out the two categories. Do not treat that shorter summary as a promise that every visitor pays the passenger rate. Confirm the applicable total at parcel check for your circumstances.

Some older guides still quote US$10 for ticket holders and US$20 for others. That older split does not match the current Amtrak service page. Check the operator's latest conditions rather than carrying a past article's fee into a new trip.

The fee is per item. Count separate cases and bags before comparing with a city booking. If you are taking several pieces, ask what constitutes an item and whether the unusual size is accepted; do not assume one person's belongings cost one fee.

A Metra ticket does not establish the Amtrak rate

Union Station serves different rail services, but the published discounted storage category is for valid Amtrak customers. A Metra commuter ticket is not itself an Amtrak ticket, and another train company's reservation does not automatically create the same entitlement.

If arriving by Metra and collecting later before another journey, compare the applicable public rate with a city point. Ask staff about the actual category instead of buying an unrelated service because a guide says “train passengers”.

Likewise, a family member without the qualifying travel entitlement should not assume a group gets the same conditions for every item. Give the counter the actual situation and compare the final amount for all luggage.

Check counter hours separately from the Great Hall

Opening hours for the station building, Great Hall, ticketing and Metropolitan Lounge are different pieces of information. None alone establishes when parcel check will accept or return luggage on your date.

Ask the service about the exact drop-off and collection times you need. If a temporary Great Hall notice changes public access, confirm the route to the counter too. Do not treat a building-hours headline as a baggage reservation.

For a late collection, get a clear answer before leaving the suitcase. Paying for a full twenty-four-hour storage period does not imply a right to retrieve it at any point during the night. A closed counter can matter even if the next train is still running.

Keep a collection margin before the agreed end. If travel changes, contact the service while it is still reachable and ask what can actually be arranged. Extending a charge does not necessarily extend staffed access.

Temporary storage is different from checked baggage

Parcel check keeps a bag at the station for you to retrieve. Checked baggage is accepted for transport on an eligible train journey. Finding both phrases on a station page does not make the services interchangeable.

If you want the suitcase to travel separately on the train, confirm that your actual service and destination offer checked baggage and follow the acceptance deadline. A storage claim check does not register the bag for transport.

If you only want a few luggage-free hours, ask for temporary storage. Do not hand the bag over under a different process because the word “baggage” appears on the counter. Make the intended collection location and time clear.

Red Cap assistance is another distinct service: staff help with baggage handling and boarding at participating stations. Free handling assistance does not establish free storage while you spend the day away.

Metropolitan Lounge: access first, storage second

The Metropolitan Lounge is not a public cloakroom. Access depends on the current Amtrak ticket, accommodation, status or eligible lounge pass conditions. An ordinary city visit or a Metra ticket does not grant entry.

The Chicago station page lists lounge hours separately from parcel check. If you qualify, ask the lounge about its own bag process, return access and any required identification. Do not assume it follows the public counter's conditions.

Before buying lounge access only for the suitcase, compare the actual eligible offer with parcel check and city storage. The useful question is what service you receive for the full cost, not whether an old blog describes a complimentary luggage room.

The Loop is not one storage address

The Loop, West Loop and different downtown stations create different return journeys. Union Station, Ogilvie Transportation Center and Millennium Station are separate locations. Save the station your ticket names before choosing a nearby partner.

A point near the last part of your city day may reduce a return trip. But if you then need to travel back west to Union Station, include that section. A storage point is useful because the whole sequence works, not because it shares a neighbourhood name with a landmark.

Check the street address and entrance on a current map. Straight-line proximity does not include crossings, building access or the final route with a rolling suitcase. For heavy luggage, check steps and assistance rather than assuming every basement or shop is equally accessible.

Partner networks: book the actual point

Bounce, Stasher and similar services list local businesses near stations and around the Loop. These are partner locations, not official Union Station counters. Enter the actual dates, hours and item count to see a relevant final quote.

Read the selected point's daily schedule. “Open now”, a city-wide twenty-four-hour headline and a support hotline are not the same as access at the time you will return. Check weekend and holiday arrangements for the specific business.

Save the confirmation, exact address and handover instructions before walking there. Some bookings use a code, others a booking ID and staff confirmation. Follow that reservation rather than expecting a universal self-service locker process.

Ask about unusual or heavy items and check prohibited contents. A general platform description accepting large bags does not establish the capacity of every store. If the precise point is unsuitable, solve it before handing over the luggage.

Airport and bus connections need their own verification

Do not choose an airport storage plan only because a general search result says “Chicago airport luggage storage”. Confirm a real service at the airport or an exact outside partner before making the trip. Airport visitor assistance is not automatically a bag-holding service.

O'Hare and Midway are different airports. Write down the code on the flight and include the whole journey there after collection. A central rail station is not the airport terminal, and a city train's departure time is not an airline bag-drop deadline.

For an intercity bus, use the current address on the ticket. Greyhound lists several Chicago stops and warns that the ticket carries the latest location. A stop called Chicago Train Station can be a street boarding point rather than the rail parcel counter.

Check the actual pickup after construction or diversions. Leaving a suitcase near an old bus-station address can create another cross-city journey. Do not transfer an old guide's storage claim to every current bus stop.

Attraction lockers are not a citywide luggage solution

Navy Pier's official FAQ confirms a limited number of paid lockers. Their sizes, location and access conditions matter. A limited attraction facility is not a promise of space for every suitcase or a substitute for late-night city storage.

For a museum, theatre or sports visit, check that venue's bag policy separately. A cloakroom for visitors may not accept large travel cases or keep them after closing. Do not plan a day around an assumed favour from staff.

If a large bag would prevent entry, resolve storage before the visit. Keep the visit's end compatible with collection and the onward departure. This is a luggage decision, not a reason to add a detour through an attraction you did not intend to visit.

Payment, proof and a sensible day bag

Compare the final price for all items, duration and mandatory charges. A per-hour headline may have a minimum period or additional conditions; a daily starting price may apply only to a particular item or location. Use the actual checkout total.

Read cancellation and protection conditions. A voucher is not the same as a cash refund, and a maximum protection amount is not guaranteed compensation. Keep the receipt and photograph the bag's condition at handover.

Carry passport or required ID, travel tickets, payment method, medicine, keys, phone and the collection credential. Add a suitable outer layer and what the planned visits require. Access to a stored suitcase during the day depends on the service's rules.

Build a return that leaves time to board

Set the required arrival for the next train, bus or flight, then subtract onward travel, collection and a realistic margin. Compare Union Station with one suitable city point under that same deadline. Our independent travel planning guide helps arrange fixed departures and flexible time.

If the onward trip reaches the next destination late, our guide to late arrivals and check-in helps with the next transfer and room access. Finish the Chicago visit near a workable return for the bags instead of adding another difficult crossing at the end.
