Hotel Stars: What They Mean and How to Check the Criteria
Hotel stars indicate a category within a particular classification system. To understand them, establish who awarded the rating, which current criteria apply and how to verify the specific property. Then confirm the services you need in your selected room.
There is no single compulsory worldwide scale. Four stars in different countries do not automatically mean identical facilities, and a guest score of 4.8 out of five is not an official hotel category.
What stars assess and what they leave unanswered
Classification systems examine facilities, services and other property characteristics. Hotelstars Union, for example, covers rooms, reception, food, additional facilities and quality. Mandatory requirements and points both contribute to a category.
A rating helps narrow a shortlist within a known system. It does not by itself tell you whether daily journeys to your museums are convenient, whether you will like a particular room's view or whether breakfast hours fit your family.
Assess location separately. Our guide to choosing a neighbourhood to stay in examines door-to-door travel and evening returns.
Save the places you want to visit on your personal map in RoadMe and compare their locations with the areas where you are considering accommodation.
Identify the system before comparing categories
Start with the country and the organisation responsible for the stated classification. Find its current criteria and a way to verify the property. Do not assume that an online booking site's symbols all represent the same awarding body.
Hotelstars Union provides a shared 2025–2030 catalogue for participating systems. That does not cover every country or every European hotel. Check the applicable national arrangements and the rating's current validity.
In England, VisitEngland quality schemes use trained assessors to evaluate participating businesses and award ratings or accreditation. Its schemes cover several accommodation types. A hotel rating and a rating for a self-catering property should not be treated as interchangeable assessments of identical facilities. VisitEngland explains how to contact its assessment team to verify a particular rating.
Other destinations have their own arrangements. If a claimed category cannot be traced, ask the property who awarded it and how to verify it before paying.

Read current criteria without assuming every amenity
Use the actual scheme's current catalogue, rather than a travel blog's averaged “one to five stars” table. Requirements may include alternatives, facilities available on request and services with defined hours.
For example, Hotelstars Union's current four-star summary allows alternatives for drinks: a minibar, a shared self-service facility or a defined room-service offer. “Every four-star room must have its own minibar” is therefore an unreliable assumption even within that scheme.
Room names such as Deluxe or Suite are a separate description from the property's star classification. Examine the selected room's size, beds, bathroom and included services. A facility existing somewhere in the hotel does not establish that your booking includes it free of charge.
Turn the rating into questions for your stay
Check your room and rate for your actual dates. Confirm essential conditions in writing where practical, including any extra charge and operating hours.
| Essential condition | Ask about |
|---|---|
| Quiet sleep | Windows, noise, blackout |
| Evening arrival | Late access and assistance |
| Meals | Hours and rate inclusion |
| Required equipment | Exact room and extra cost |
Guest reviews describe experiences, a different measure from classification. Our guide to reading hotel reviews explains how to consider stay dates, room types and recurring observations.
Once accommodation arrangements are clear, try arranging city visits by day in RoadMe around your interests and pace, leaving practical breaks to return to your room.
Before booking, obtain three separate answers: the category is verifiable, your offer includes the facilities you need, and the location fits your plans. A star count cannot replace those checks.
