St Petersburg’s Podorozhnik card: buying, topping up and paying fares
Podorozhnik is St Petersburg's transport card, but buying the plastic does not by itself buy journeys. You also need a ticket product or money loaded to the stored-value ticket. For a visitor, the main decisions are which product to use, how to load it and whether a remote payment still needs to be written to the physical card.
Information checked on 26 October 2026. This guide covers ordinary city public transport and the difference between plastic and a virtual ticket. It does not assume that every regional bus, train or sightseeing boat accepts the same fare. Check the current product before purchase, especially if your trip extends into a new tariff year.
The card, the ticket and the phone are different things
| Item | What it does | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Plastic Podorozhnik | A reusable carrier for a compatible ticket | Unlimited travel included in the purchase price |
| Stored-value unified ticket | Deducts the applicable fare from loaded credit | A day pass just because it is on the same card |
| 90-minute or day ticket | Provides the specific time-based travel entitlement | Every product can be combined on one carrier |
| Virtual ticket | A separate ticket used through the official application | A photograph or automatic copy of your plastic card |
Tell the seller what you want: a new card with stored-value credit, or a particular time-based ticket. The product matters as much as the familiar card name. Do not add a day ticket to an existing wallet plan without checking compatibility.
Before choosing a travel product, try RoadMe: in supported cities, the app develops a complete personal trip plan around your interests, dates and pace. Keeping that plan in the app makes it easier to estimate real journeys without organising the holiday merely to use a pass.
Start with days you will actually spend exploring. A visitor who walks between nearby sights needs a different product from someone repeatedly travelling across the city. Count likely boardings, not the number of attractions on a wish list.
Where to buy a physical card
Metro ticket offices and the appropriate ticket-selling machines are practical starting points. The official transport organiser also has sales outlets. Use the actual outlet and machine instructions rather than a third-party article's promise about a particular airport kiosk.
Ask for the ordinary product you need and check the amount loaded. The carrier price and usable travel balance are separate. Paying only for the card does not leave an equal amount of fare credit on it.
At the check date, the standard plastic carrier costs RUB 90. Keep the receipt and a record of the card number for enquiries. A special design does not necessarily change the ticket rules; the product recorded on the card determines travel.
Metro machines offer payment methods including cash, bank card and the local fast-payment system where supported. A displayed payment symbol does not guarantee your own foreign-issued card will work. Have a payment method usable in Russia rather than relying on an overseas mobile wallet.
Useful 2026 prices, with the right units
| Item | Listed price | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Standard plastic carrier | RUB 90 | Separate from the travel credit or ticket |
| Ordinary stored-value trip | RUB 65 | City metro or eligible city surface transport under the applicable rules |
| Second eligible surface trip in the transfer window | RUB 14 | Within the specified 60-minute arrangement, not a metro transfer |
| 90-minute unified ticket | RUB 106 | One metro journey and unlimited eligible surface journeys in its period |
| One-day unified ticket | RUB 364 | Ordinary product valid for 24 hours from first validation |
These are dated public tariffs, not a promise for a later year or every service around St Petersburg. Before loading a product, check its current price and coverage. A bank card fare and a Podorozhnik wallet fare are not automatically the same.
For comparison in another currency, use your own payment conditions. The local tariffs are in roubles; a foreign-currency estimate does not establish the amount charged by a card issuer. Keep the original price visible when checking a seller's conversion.

Stored value: a straightforward choice for mixed days
The stored-value unified ticket, often described as an electronic wallet, pays for journeys from its balance. It can suit a trip with walking, occasional metro travel and different daily patterns. You do not need to force the same number of rides into each day.
Load a realistic amount rather than a large reserve simply because the machine allows it. Check the remaining balance before a long outing and top up through an available channel. Do not assume leftover money can be freely exchanged back like cash.
The current wallet resource has a use period linked to the most recent purchase or replenishment, up to three years under the listed conditions. That does not turn a one-day ticket into a three-year product. Each ticket keeps its own validity.
If buying another kind of ticket later, check which products can coexist. In particular, the ordinary 90-minute and day tickets are not simply extra options stacked onto an existing wallet carrier. Ask the seller about a suitable separate carrier or the correct changeover.
The 60-minute surface transfer is not a metro transfer
Under the current city surface-transport arrangement, the first eligible wallet journey costs RUB 65, the second RUB 14 and the third and subsequent eligible journeys are free within the 60-minute window measured from the first journey.
This applies to the specified city bus, tram and trolleybus travel paid with the unified stored-value ticket. It is not a general discount for combining any two kinds of transport. The metro is outside this surface-transfer benefit.
The operator states that paying for metro travel, Leningrad Region buses or a suburban rail ticket ends this transfer arrangement. Do not expect a bus, metro and another bus to preserve the original surface discount automatically.
Validate at every boarding, including a journey that should be free. A discount does not replace the electronic record of payment. The time runs from the first eligible journey, not from each new boarding and not from the first ride of the entire holiday.
When a 90-minute or day ticket makes sense
The current 90-minute product includes one metro journey and unlimited eligible surface journeys in the defined period. It does not mean unlimited metro entries for 90 minutes. Compare your actual sequence with the wallet's separate surface-transfer rules.
The ordinary one-day unified ticket runs for 24 hours from its first validation. It is not simply a calendar day ending at midnight. Longer ordinary day products use the corresponding continuous-hour period; read the ticket actually being sold.
Six full-price wallet trips cost more than the listed one-day ticket, but that is only a rough screening comparison. Surface discounts, walking instead of riding and the need for a separate carrier can change your personal calculation. Do not buy unlimited travel just to make the number look attractive.
The ordinary day product has a period in which first use must begin, currently 180 days from recording under its listed rules. Other products combining city transport with rail can have different date conditions. Do not borrow the rail combination's rules for a plain day ticket.
Our travel budget guide helps compare transport with the whole day, including other costs. The useful saving comes from travel you want, not extra journeys added only because the ticket allows them.
Why a separate card for each traveller is simpler
For an ordinary visitor plan, use one suitable card or ticket per person. Rapidly handing one card back to a companion can change fare or fail because of repeat-use restrictions. It is not equivalent to giving everyone the same discounted journey.
The metro wallet tariff currently distinguishes a RUB 65 journey with a ten-minute repeat interval from a RUB 95 journey without that interval. A quick repeat is therefore not a reliable way to obtain a second discounted admission.
The ordinary day ticket has its own metro repeat restriction, currently twenty minutes. A group should not treat a time-based personal journey plan as an unlimited group entry allowance. Ask about any intended multi-passenger payment arrangement before relying on it.
Keep cards distinct and make sure each person validates the intended one. A child concession, student product or named benefit has separate eligibility conditions; speaking a particular language or travelling as a family does not establish entitlement.

Top up at a ticket office or machine
An in-person top-up is useful when you want the credit written and checked before travelling. Present the correct card, specify the wallet amount or ticket product and keep it in the reader until the operation finishes.
Read the confirmation and balance rather than removing the card at the first sound. Keep the payment receipt until you have checked the result. A machine accepting money and a completed write to the card are related but distinct steps.
If the machine asks you to choose a product, do not assume the largest or most prominent button is ordinary wallet credit. A monthly pass, time-based ticket and wallet top-up serve different purposes. Ask staff if the chosen screen does not match your intention.
A successful complete in-person recording should not be confused with a pending online load. Do not repeat the same payment merely because an old article says every top-up needs another transaction. Establish whether the card has already been updated.
Remote payment: the physical card may still need activation
A remote top-up can create a pending payment that must be recorded on the plastic. The bank charge alone does not prove the new resource is already available to pay for a journey. This distinction is the main cause to check when money has left the account but the fare balance seems unchanged.
Use an eligible metro machine or ticket office to write the pending load. The operator also permits wallet activation on appropriate surface-transport equipment. Follow that device's prompts and wait for confirmation before removing the card.
Some devices have an activation menu or require a longer hold than a normal fare tap. Do not assume every validator uses the same button sequence. Activating a pending top-up is not a substitute for validating the actual journey afterwards.
At preparation, the transport organiser had published a notice about temporary unavailability of some delayed plastic-wallet funding through its passenger account and application. Check the channel's current status and keep an in-person alternative. This does not mean every online provider or every virtual ticket has stopped working.
Virtual Podorozhnik is a different product
The official application offers virtual tickets for supported city transport. It is not just a wallet containing a picture of your plastic card. The operator says a ticket on a plastic carrier cannot simply be transferred into the virtual version.
The presentation method is selected automatically by the application according to the device: supported NFC or an on-screen QR code. Do not assume that any phone with an NFC chip can use every transport function, or that a photograph of a QR code is valid.
QR payment needs a live internet connection at validation. Supported NFC use can work without a continuous connection only within the operator's limited conditions and with valid ticket data already on the device. It is not unlimited offline travel.
Keep enough battery and check the actual ticket before approaching the reader. If you want a simple independent backup, a correctly loaded physical card can avoid relying entirely on phone connectivity. A plastic top-up notice should not be interpreted as the complete virtual service being unavailable.
At the reader: wait for the actual result
Present the intended card on its own instead of a whole wallet full of contactless cards. Hold it until the equipment completes its response and confirms the journey. A movement past the reader is not proof of payment.
If access fails, check the message, available resource and the product's validity. Consider a pending load, a repeat-use interval or the wrong ticket type before paying again. Ask staff when the result remains unclear.
For an activation problem, retain the card number, payment reference, time and receipt. Contact the provider that processed the payment or the transport organiser. Do not share bank passwords or verification codes with someone claiming to fix a travel card.

Coverage beyond a city journey
Do not treat the card as a universal pass for all travel around the region. A city bus, regional bus, suburban train and sightseeing boat can have different ticket arrangements. Even where the same physical carrier is supported, the product and fare may differ.
For arrival planning, our Pulkovo airport transfer guide explains the transport choices separately. Choose an actual eligible service and then confirm its payment conditions; an airport destination alone does not establish a special express service or an included onward journey.
Let RoadMe develop the complete personal city programme around your interests and a comfortable pace in supported destinations. Using it in the app is more convenient than planning unnecessary crossings just to consume a travel product.
Before setting out, confirm the recorded ticket, available credit, any pending activation and each traveller's own payment method. The card works best when you know which entitlement it carries and wait for a successful validation on every journey.
