Ibiza to Formentera Ferry: Tickets, Ports and Vehicle Rules
The Ibiza–Formentera ferry normally connects Ibiza Town with La Savina. Fast services advertise a crossing of about 30 minutes, but choose your ticket by the actual departure point, return conditions and whether you need a vehicle. A passenger place, a vehicle place and permission to drive on Formentera are separate questions.
For a visit without a car, compare a fixed departure with an open-time product and arrange transport after La Savina. With a car or motorcycle, first establish the island's rules for your dates and a suitable vehicle-carrying sailing. Not every fast ferry takes vehicles.
Decide what kind of visit the ferry needs to support
Start with a day visit, an overnight stay or a connection from an arriving flight. Then note the time you must be back on Ibiza and where you need to go after leaving the port. A flexible return for sightseeing and a return before a flight require different margins.
Formentera has no airport. From an Ibiza flight, there is a land transfer to the correct Ibiza ferry departure, followed by the sea crossing and the journey after La Savina. The advertised half-hour boat ride does not include those other stages.
Once the crossing is chosen, try RoadMe to work out a personalised plan for the whole visit around your interests and pace. The app makes it more convenient to organise the experiences you want while leaving enough room for the outward and return journeys.
Do not begin by adding a car automatically. Compare the actual places you want to reach, the party's needs and available transport on the island. For one person with a small bag, the result can differ from a family travelling with several cases.
Compare the ticket products, not just the fare
| Option | Useful when | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-time passenger ticket | You know the sailing you can reach | What happens after a missed departure |
| Open-time passenger product | Your visit needs some timing flexibility | Valid day or period, operator and seat availability |
| Passenger plus vehicle | A vehicle is both permitted and useful | Suitable ship, vehicle category and island authorisation |
| Ferry with a transfer or rental | The combined arrangement fits your arrival | Separate suppliers, inclusions and missed-connection terms |
Ibiza departure: confirm the terminal
Baleària's route page identifies Ibiza EMNI and La Savina. EMNI means the Nueva Ibiza Maritime Station. It should not be confused with the Botafoc Maritime Station merely because both serve the wider port of Ibiza.
The operator publishes a shuttle between those stations for specified pedestrian connections, including certain Dénia and Palma transfers. It is not evidence of a universal shuttle available to every Ibiza–Formentera passenger at any hour. Use the transfer instructions that apply to your booking.
If comparing an excursion boat or a service from another Ibiza coastal departure, check where it leaves and returns. A different pier may be useful for the accommodation, but its season, journey time and luggage terms can differ from the regular town-port service.
Save the actual departure pin, terminal name and boarding instructions before leaving the hotel or airport. A map search for “Ibiza port” can be too broad. With luggage, the wrong entrance can cost more time than the difference between two advertised crossings.
What “30 minutes” does and does not include
Formentera Lines describes its fast crossing as approximately 30 minutes; Baleària also advertises fast services around that duration. Match the duration to the selected ship and departure, especially when carrying a vehicle. Do not apply one fast sailing's time to every vessel.
For the full journey, add access to the terminal, the required early arrival, waiting, disembarkation and onward transport. Arrival at La Savina's berth is not arrival at every hotel or beach on Formentera. Compare each stage on both directions.
Services run throughout the year, with more frequent operation in summer, according to the island tourism office. That does not promise a departure every few minutes in winter or a continuous night service. Search the date rather than relying on a peak-season summary.

Open tickets: two meanings worth separating
Baleària's route information describes an OPEN passenger product without a vehicle, valid for one year. Check the actual confirmation and conditions before depending on it. A long validity period is not itself a guarantee of a reserved place on every departure.
Formentera Lines describes its Open-Time product as travel at any time on the selected day when seats are available. Its fixed-time product applies to the selected day and sailing. Do not turn “open” into an assumption that any company will accept the ticket.
For a return journey, identify the operating company and the return's valid date or period separately. A crowded boat or a changed timetable can still affect an open product. Keep a workable earlier return if you have a commitment after the ferry.
Check refund and change rules independently of time flexibility. A ticket can allow a different departure but have restricted cancellation. If plans are uncertain, compare the final price and the exact flexibility rather than choosing the word OPEN alone.
Price: compare the whole party and the same journey
Enter the real travel dates, ages and number of passengers, then compare the full total. Establish whether a displayed amount is one way or return, per person or for the group, and whether it includes a vehicle. A low starting fare does not price every departure.
Resident fares are not general tourist prices. Use them only when the required eligibility and evidence apply to the passenger. Living elsewhere in Spain, speaking Spanish or holding an EU passport does not by itself establish Balearic residence.
Add the journey to the Ibiza departure point and the transport you intend to use after La Savina. If taking a vehicle, include its ferry charge and any applicable island permission cost. A passenger-only return cannot be compared directly with the total for a family and a car.
For a ferry-plus-rental or transfer package, check what is actually included and who provides it. A rental reservation may have its own deposit, collection time and cancellation conditions. The boat operator's ticket rules do not automatically replace those of another supplier.
Boarding: be ready before the departure time
Find the presentation requirement on your booking and allow for reaching the correct boarding point. Formentera Lines recommends at least 15 minutes before departure and more for busy summer returns. Its published closing time is a limit, not a sensible target for arriving at the port.
Vehicle presentation requirements are a separate issue. Use the selected operator's route instructions and leave time to find the correct lane. Do not copy the shortest pedestrian margin from another company when bringing a car or motorcycle.
Keep the issued boarding pass downloaded or printed for every traveller and both directions. A purchase receipt is not necessarily the boarding document. Check the passenger details, date and service before leaving the point where a mistake is easy to resolve.
Carry the original valid identification required by your operator and circumstances, including children's documents where applicable. Language does not identify a traveller's nationality or document rights. Do not assume a screenshot of an identity document is accepted.
Luggage, bicycles and special assistance
Formentera Lines publishes one suitcase or bag up to 20 kg plus a small personal item within its free allowance. That is its own rule, not a limit for all companies on the route. Check unusual or excess luggage before buying.
A bicycle may be an alternative to bringing a car, but check carriage, available space and any booking requirement with the chosen operator. A folding bicycle, an ordinary bike and an electric scooter need not have identical conditions. Do not assume every item fits any departure.
If assistance is needed, describe it before booking and confirm the particular sailing. The gangway, ship layout and final transport matter together. “Fast ferry” or a photograph of a modern vessel does not establish step-free access throughout the journey.
Car to Formentera: check the seasonal rules first
A vehicle ticket buys carriage on a suitable ship. It does not automatically grant permission to enter, circulate or park on the island during a regulated period. Those requirements are handled through the island's Formentera.eco system.
Checked on 28 October 2026, the official portal states that the 2026 vehicle-regulation season ended on 30 September. It says the portal is temporarily out of service and is scheduled to reopen on 20 April 2027, with the 2027 rules to be published once approved.
Do not extend the previous season's fees, quotas or vehicle categories automatically into 2027. A reopening date for the portal is not the approved calendar or an authorisation for your vehicle. Check the new published rules when planning a future regulated-season trip.
When the system applies, confirm the correct number plate, dates and vehicle category before relying on ferry space. Check any claimed exemption through the official process. A general statement that “cars are allowed on the ferry” cannot answer an island access question.

Hire car, motorcycle or camper: add the owner's conditions
If the vehicle is hired on Ibiza, obtain the rental company's permission to take it to Formentera and check the insurance. A successful ferry booking does not amend the rental contract. An island permission, when required, does not replace the owner's consent either.
For a motorcycle, scooter, camper or unusual vehicle, check the island's applicable category before choosing a ship. Do not infer permission from a passenger website offering a vehicle field. Rules can distinguish vehicles that look similar in a booking menu.
Compare that arrangement with travelling without the vehicle and hiring locally if needed. Include the real rental terms, availability and your party's comfort. The aim is a useful stay, not necessarily the maximum amount of transport carried over from Ibiza.
After arrival at La Savina
La Savina is Formentera's port of arrival. The island tourism office describes buses, taxis, bicycles and local rentals as ways to continue. Check the current timetable or booking for your date and destination instead of assuming transport meets every sailing.
The port's history helps explain its position: it developed around the turn of the twentieth century as a sheltered alternative for boats and later played a role in salt exports. Today it is the island's passenger and supply gateway, rather than the whole holiday destination.
Before sailing, save your accommodation's address and access instructions. Identify the final stop or agreed collection point. If arriving with cases, consider how you will reach the entrance and where a rented vehicle can actually be collected.
For a short visit, organise only what fits between the outward arrival and a realistic return to La Savina. This is a transport choice, not a ready-made sightseeing route. Leave room to change a plan if the weather or ferry operation changes.
Returning to Ibiza and an onward flight
Check the return timetable independently. The last departure displayed for another day, operator or season is not your guaranteed final option. An open ticket does not keep a boat waiting or extend the service into the night.
For a flight connection, count backward from the airline's required airport arrival. Add disembarkation, transport from the correct Ibiza terminal and a margin for disruption. Do not use 30 minutes at sea as the entire transfer from Formentera to the airport.
If that chain is tight or the commitment cannot be missed, consider returning earlier or staying on Ibiza before the flight. Compare the cost of that arrangement with the consequences of a missed separate booking. There is no universal safe connection time for every arrival.
Our guide to preparing for ferry boarding covers the general document and luggage checks. Use this route's actual ticket conditions for the timing and the island's own rules for a vehicle.
Weather changes and three practical choices
The tourism office notes that bad weather can interrupt services, especially in winter. Check operating notices before setting off and follow the company handling your booking if the sailing changes. Do not buy a replacement assuming the original fare will automatically be refunded.
Day visitor without a car: compare fixed and open-time tickets, the return's availability and onward transport from La Savina. Keep an earlier return option if the evening has a fixed commitment.
Family with a hired car: establish rental permission, applicable island rules and a vehicle-capable sailing before comparing the full fare. A place for passengers alone does not reserve the car.
Arrival by air before continuing to Formentera: allow for baggage and the land transfer to the correct terminal. Choose ticket flexibility that actually covers the uncertainty and check access to the accommodation at the likely arrival time.

Use our independent trip planning guide to connect the crossing with the rest of the stay. Keep the outbound and return bookings, terminal information and essential contacts available offline.
In RoadMe, you can work out a complete personal plan that brings together your interests, visits and rest more conveniently. Try organising the whole trip in the app at a pace that fits the real ferry journey.
Before paying, you should know five things: the correct departure point, the ticket's actual flexibility, the return you can use, how you will continue from La Savina and whether any vehicle permissions are settled. That is a stronger basis for choosing than the lowest headline fare.
