Prague Airport to the City: Trolleybus, Metro or Airport Express?

8 min read

Preparing luggage before leaving the airport

For Prague Airport to the city centre, compare trolleybus 59 plus Metro A, bus 100 plus Metro B, and Airport Express if the main railway station is useful. The first two use ordinary Prague public-transport fares. Airport Express, abbreviated AE, has a separate ticket. There is no reason to buy the special airport bus merely because your journey begins at an airport.

Choose by the accommodation address and time leaving arrivals. A straightforward metro connection can be convenient; a direct ride to the main station may be better with a rail continuation. After a late flight, compare the actual night connection rather than assuming the daytime metro still runs.

Start with the address and the final section

Save the hotel's real entrance and nearest useful stop. “Prague centre” is not one transport destination. An address convenient for Metro A, another near Anděl and a room beside the main railway station can lead to different sensible choices.

Look at the route after the airport vehicle: a metro ride, a short walk or another service. Include crossings, stairs and the luggage you will actually carry. One less change can matter more than a small difference in the first vehicle's duration.

Try RoadMe to work out a complete personalised visit around your interests and preferred pace. Once the arrival connection is clear, the app makes it more convenient to organise the whole stay with time for sightseeing and rest.

Before buying, decide whether you want one airport journey or a pass for more travel afterwards. That affects the suitable ticket, but it does not change the distinction between standard city lines and the separately priced AE service.

The main arrival choices

OptionConnectionTicket distinction
Trolleybus 59Nádraží Veleslavín, then Metro AStandard Prague fare
Bus 100Zličín, then Metro BStandard Prague fare
Bus 191A useful stop towards Petřiny or AndělStandard fare; check the full route
Airport Express AEPrague main railway stationSeparate AE ticket

These are alternatives, not a requirement to combine all of them. Use the current journey planner with your address and date. The right line is the one that leaves a manageable last section.

Why the route is 59, not the old 119

Trolleybus 59 replaced bus 119 in March 2024. An older guide mentioning 119 is not describing the current route number to Nádraží Veleslavín. Use the active signs and timetable rather than searching outside arrivals for an obsolete number.

The airport describes about 15 minutes on 59 to the Veleslavín connection. That is the first vehicle, not the entire hotel transfer. Metro waiting, the urban ride and the final walk still follow.

At Nádraží Veleslavín, continue on Metro A in the direction needed for your address. The word nádraží means station, but this airport connection is useful because of the metro; it is not a direct train from the airport to every central address.

Keep luggage out of the aisle and use the current signs for boarding and the change. Do not interpret an old photograph of a bus bay as a permanent airport layout. If the posted arrangement differs, follow staff and current passenger information.

When bus 100 or 191 is worth comparing

Bus 100 connects the airport with Zličín on Metro B. It can be a useful alternative when the hotel or next connection is better served by that line. Compare the whole journey rather than deciding that a longer first bus ride automatically makes it worse.

Bus 191 serves a different corridor, with connections towards Petřiny and Na Knížecí/Anděl. Check it if its actual stop makes sense for your address. It is not a shortcut for all city-centre hotels simply because it reaches an urban district.

The airport lists a much longer indicative journey for 191 than for the first metro feeders. That can still be acceptable when it removes a difficult change. Put the bus stop and hotel entrance on the same current map before choosing.

Standard fares apply on 59, 100 and 191, including eligible 24- and 72-hour Prague tickets. You do not need to buy a special airport supplement for those ordinary lines just because you board at the terminal.

2026 ticket examples: app and paper differ

At the check date of 28 October 2026, the ordinary 90-minute Prague ticket cost CZK 46 in PID Lítačka and CZK 50 as a paper ticket. These are the fares introduced for 2026, not the older city prices still repeated in some travel guides.

PID recommends the 90-minute option for the airport journey. Check that the full planned trip fits the ticket's time and coverage. A cheaper shorter ticket is not a saving if it expires before you complete the required journey.

Within the relevant validity, the standard ticket is for the integrated journey rather than a new purchase every time you change vehicles. Do not automatically buy a second ticket just because 59 connects to the metro. Keep the first ticket usable and follow the validation rules.

If you already have an eligible city pass, check its remaining validity instead of buying another airport ticket. A pass valid later in the stay cannot cover a journey made before activation. Similarly, a pass expiring during the required travel should not be treated as sufficient.

Paper ticket: validate when required, only once

A printed ticket that requires validation must be stamped on the first journey before or when entering the service as instructed. For the metro, use the validators before the paid area. Follow the markings for the particular airport stop or vehicle.

Do not stamp the same time ticket again at every transfer. Its period runs from the first proper validation. PID also explains this for 24- and 72-hour paper tickets: repeated validation is not how to extend or restart them.

Check the ticket itself if it was issued already valid with a printed time. A ticket bought in advance and one issued with validity have different practical steps. If uncertain, ask before boarding rather than assuming every piece of paper needs another stamp.

Keep the ticket for the entire journey and inspection. A photograph of a machine or a payment receipt should not be substituted for the valid transport title required by the operator.

PID Lítačka: purchase is not the whole activation process

The app can store a ticket for later use, activate it after purchase or schedule its validity. Choose the mode deliberately. A ticket sitting unused in the app is not enough to board.

PID's current instructions require a one-minute protective period after activation. Wait until the ticket is fully valid before entering the vehicle or the metro paid area. Pressing activate when an inspector appears does not cover the journey already made.

You need an internet connection for purchase and activation. Once properly activated, the ticket can remain valid without a live connection according to the operator's instructions. Keep enough battery to show the actual ticket during a check.

The app fare is not a guarantee that every other electronic channel charges the same amount. Paper, app and SMS products can have different prices and requirements. Do not rely on a foreign phone number working with a local SMS product without checking its conditions.

Airport Express: separate fare to the main railway station

DPP listed the Airport Express ticket at CZK 200 on the check date. AE links the airport with Praha hlavní nádraží, the main railway station. A standard city ticket or pass should not be treated as its fare.

Compare AE when you are taking a train from that station or staying close enough for a simple final approach. If your hotel is elsewhere, arrival at the main station still leaves a city journey. Add its time and any required ticket.

PID lists the airport AE connection from Terminal 1. If you arrive elsewhere, check the current airport signs and the actual boarding place before waiting. Do not assume every airport line boards at exactly the same terminal stop.

Buy the correct AE product from the designated sale channel and check the date and direction. A rail offer that specifically includes an airport connection is a different purchase from an ordinary urban pass. Read what your actual booking covers.

Checking how to purchase a ticket before travel

Terminal and time: use the flight information

Save your flight's current terminal. Do not decide the terminal from your passport or the language of a booking. On the return journey, recheck it before leaving the accommodation and select the right stop for the flight.

The airport places public-transport stops at the terminals, but a stop's direction and line still matter. Read the current destination rather than boarding the first vehicle with a familiar number. For a return, save the opposite-direction approach separately.

Start the timing calculation after baggage and any applicable arrival procedures, not at scheduled touchdown. Allow for ticket purchase or activation and finding the correct stop. A frequent route does not mean every flight-to-vehicle connection is immediate.

Night 907 and 910: a different network

DPP identifies 907 and 910 as standard-fare night connections between the airport and the city. Their useful stops depend on the actual hotel and onward night service. They are not the daytime 59-plus-metro trip running unchanged after midnight.

Check the current dated route and destination. A night bus can take a different path and involve a different final walk from your daytime plan. Do not transfer a daytime metro connection to the night calculation without verifying that it operates.

If the night option leaves a difficult last section with luggage, compare a current car quote to the exact hotel entrance. A direct road journey may cost more but remove a long or inconvenient change. The comparison should be for your whole group.

Our guide to late arrivals, transfers and check-in helps join the transport decision to room access. Confirm reception hours, late entry instructions and how to report a delay.

Luggage, accessibility and the last walk

Check PID's current luggage conditions for the size and ticket you will use. Do not assume all luggage is either always free or always charged separately. A small day bag, a large case and an item covered by a pass can have different conditions.

Look at the station approach as well as the vehicle. Low-floor transport does not by itself establish that every later entrance or interchange is step-free. For a specific mobility need, confirm the actual accessible route and current lift availability.

For a family, count each passenger's applicable ticket conditions and any required evidence for concessions. A child's age category is not an invitation to assume the same documentation rules for every transport product.

Ask accommodation about the best approach with cases, especially when the entrance is in a pedestrian street or courtyard. A short street distance can still be less comfortable than a slightly longer route with a clearer entrance.

Car comparison and the return to the airport

Compare an actual car quote to the door, including vehicle capacity, luggage and any requested equipment. Do not turn a historical guide's approximate taxi amount into a fixed current airport price. Confirm pickup instructions for the chosen service.

For a booked meeting, settle waiting and delay conditions. For a return, make a new calculation backwards from the airline's airport requirements. A convenient arrival route is not automatically available for a very early departure.

Check transport disruptions and current road notices before leaving. The airport's indicative travel times are planning references, not guarantees of reaching check-in by a deadline. Keep a realistic buffer for the actual connection.

Make the decision with one complete comparison

Compare 59 plus Metro A, another useful ordinary line or AE only when its endpoint helps. Add waiting, final approach, ticket use and room access. Our independent travel preparation guide helps keep those arrival details with the rest of the bookings.
