Ferries to Morocco: Comparing Spain and France Departures
To choose a ferry to Morocco, compare the arrival port first, then the complete journey from your starting point. Tarifa–Tangier Ville suits a different arrival from Algeciras–Tanger Med. Longer sailings from France can avoid a long drive through Spain, but require a different budget of time and onboard accommodation.
Tangier Ville and Tanger Med are separate ports. A ticket labelled simply “Tangier” needs closer inspection before you arrange a hotel, onward train or meeting. The shortest sea crossing is not automatically the shortest journey to your actual destination.
Choose the Moroccan arrival before the departure port
Write down where you want to go after disembarking and whether you will have your own vehicle. For a stay in Tangier without a car, arrival at the urban port can simplify the next stage. For a driving trip, compare the road connection from the booked terminal as part of the overall journey.
If your destination is northeastern Morocco, include Nador in the comparison rather than treating every ferry as a crossing to Tangier. A longer passage can put you closer to the intended region. The useful result is arrival at your destination, not first contact with the Moroccan coast.
After choosing your arrival port, try RoadMe to work out a personalised plan for the whole trip around your interests and pace. The app makes it more convenient to organise the experiences you want while leaving room for the crossing and recovery afterwards.
Record the port's full name in the booking notes. Keep the ferry terminal, the city's railway station and the accommodation entrance as separate points. Similar names in a search result do not establish that you can walk between them with luggage.
Which crossings belong in the comparison?
| Option | Arrival | Why consider it | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tarifa–Tangier Ville | Tangier's urban port | Short crossing and an urban arrival | Access to Tarifa, port procedures and onward travel still count |
| Algeciras–Tanger Med | Tanger Med port complex | Short Strait crossing and vehicle options | Med is not the city-centre port |
| Almería–Nador | Nador/Beni Ensar area | Arrival in northeastern Morocco | Several hours at sea and a different onward region |
| Sète–Tanger Med or Nador | Port named on the sailing | Avoid part of the drive across Spain | Long sailing, cabin and meals to compare |
Tarifa–Tangier Ville: a short crossing, not an instant arrival
Baleària describes the crossing between Tarifa and Tangier Ville as approximately one hour. Check the particular departure and operating notice before travelling. Weather, the assigned vessel and port operations can affect the journey.
Tangier Ville is the urban port, useful when the next part of your trip is in the city. It is not Tangier Ville railway station. If you intend to continue by rail, identify the connection to that station separately rather than assuming a platform is beside the ferry exit.
Compare the full trip to Tarifa as well. A short crossing can lose its advantage if reaching the port takes longer from your starting point. If leaving a car in Spain, check actual parking arrangements and cost instead of assuming that a pedestrian ticket settles the arrival logistics.
The operator's current boarding-access guidance gives two hours for Tarifa and Tangier Ville, and says access to Tarifa is not permitted more than two hours before departure under those arrangements. Follow your sailing's instructions: arriving much earlier is not a guarantee of entering the boarding area.

Algeciras–Tanger Med: allow for the land section
DFDS advertises the Algeciras–Tanger Med crossing at around one hour and a half, with vehicle carriage and several daily sailings. That is a route-level orientation. Confirm the real departure rather than using a generic timetable as a promise of immediate boarding.
Tanger Med is a separate port complex outside central Tangier. The port authority describes road access and bus or taxi connections from Tangier city. If your accommodation is in the city, add that transfer after the ferry and border procedures.
DFDS recommends arrival at least 90 minutes before departure on its route page, while Tanger Med's own departure guidance lists two hours for Algeciras and longer requirements for other destinations. Read both port access and operator check-in instructions, and clarify differences before relying on the shorter margin.
For a car trip, compare road distance after leaving Med with the alternative port, plus your drive to Algeciras. For a pedestrian trip, establish the actual transfer at the likely exit time. Do not budget only the advertised time at sea.
Almería–Nador: choose the region deliberately
Baleària markets Almería–Nador as a vehicle-carrying route with seats and cabins. Its route pages give differing durations, so use the timed sailing offered for your date rather than presenting one number as universal. Treat this as a journey of several hours.
Nador's ferry port is associated with Beni Ensar, rather than an arrival at the centre of every Nador accommodation. Save the exact passenger terminal and onward address. An attractive ticket to the wrong side of northern Morocco may add more driving than it saves.
Compare the departure's time of day, rest needs and available accommodation. A seat may suit one passenger while a cabin makes more sense for another group. The choice should reflect the actual sailing length, not simply the cheapest headline fare.
From France: Sète and the current Marseille limitation
GNV lists sailings from Sète to Tanger Med and Nador. Its Sète–Tangier route guide describes roughly 39–48 hours depending on the sailing and conditions. Check whether the selected service has an intermediate call, and read the arrival date as carefully as the departure date.
A long passage can replace part of a road journey through Spain, especially with a vehicle. Compare fuel, tolls, rest stops and possible hotel nights on the road with the ferry's cabin, meals and time commitment. More hours at sea do not automatically make the complete journey worse.
As checked on 28 October 2026, La Méridionale says Marseille–Tanger Med has been suspended since 15 September for the low season. Its current notice does not commit to a resumption. Do not book connecting transport on the assumption that an older Marseille route page establishes a working departure.
If considering a later season, check a real saleable sailing and the operator's current announcement. The previous season's timetable, promotional photograph or old port access diagram cannot confirm that a route has restarted.
How to compare the price without misleading yourself
Request comparable quotes for the same party, direction and date. Specify whether the amount is per passenger or for the group, one way or return, with or without a vehicle. A low pedestrian starting price does not price a family cabin with a car.
Add accommodation, required vehicle dimensions, meals you intend to buy and any chosen extras before comparing. Include the land journey to the departure terminal and from the arrival port. Do not treat promotional “from” prices or averages as a fare available for your booking.
Read change and cancellation conditions next to the final amount. A flexible product can have a practical value when the preceding journey is uncertain, but “changeable” does not necessarily mean free cancellation or no fare difference. Use the exact fare rules.
For a return trip, compare two usable dates rather than automatically accepting a return discount. Check the number of passengers and the vehicle in both directions. A different arrival port or a one-way rental plan creates another journey, not simply a cheaper version of the same ticket.
Taking a car: carriage and permission are different
Enter the correct registration, vehicle type and full booked dimensions, including relevant attachments. GNV says it can check dimensions and charge differences or refuse unsuitable vehicles when the booked space is not appropriate. Do not select a smaller category to make the comparison look cheaper.
Check the registration document, driving licence and insurance covering the actual destination. If the car is hired, leased or belongs to someone else, establish the permissions needed with the owner, insurer and border authorities before buying carriage. A ferry place does not grant cross-border rental permission.
Vehicle customs formalities are separate from your personal entry. Keep the documents issued for the car and confirm how to close its temporary admission when leaving. If plans change, or the vehicle cannot leave as intended, resolve the process with customs rather than assuming you can abandon the paperwork.
The vehicle's country of registration and your own residence can affect which rules apply. Do not transfer a special export procedure or a rule for returning residents to every tourist car. Check the precise situation before the trip.

Passenger documents and a return to Europe
Check Morocco's entry conditions for each traveller's nationality and document. The national tourist office states that visa requirements depend on nationality. Do not assume that living in Europe or holding a European residence permit gives everyone the same permission to enter Morocco.
Check passport validity, any necessary visa or authorisation and the documents for children with the competent authorities. A ticket seller's acceptance of a booking is not an entry decision. Keep the booking details consistent with the travel documents actually used.
If returning to Spain or France, check the right to re-enter as well as the Moroccan arrival. A permission that allowed the first European entry is not automatically reusable after departure. For a short visit across the Strait, this matters just as much as for a longer holiday.
This comparison does not replace an individual document check. Resolve uncertain eligibility before buying a non-refundable journey. Requirements for a particular passport should not be copied to an international group as a general ferry rule.
Check-in, port access and the ship's departure
These are different moments. Online check-in does not eliminate port controls, and a closing time is not the suggested arrival time. GNV's Sète port page asks international passengers, with or without a vehicle, to present four hours before departure and lists check-in closing 60 minutes before.
For the return from Tanger Med, the port authority lists five hours for longer destinations including Sète. GNV's Tangier port page also publishes its own opening and closing arrangements. Read the instructions for that direction; do not copy the Sète margin onto the return journey.
Follow current lane and pedestrian instructions at the port. Keep tickets, boarding passes and travel documents accessible until the required checks are finished. Do not use a general city-centre map pin as the passenger-terminal entrance.
Timetables may use local time at each port. Spain or France and Morocco do not necessarily show the same clock time throughout the year. Read the booked local times and arrival date rather than subtracting the displayed clock values to calculate the sailing length.
Seat or cabin, and the bag you take upstairs
Compare a cabin with a seat using the selected ship's actual accommodation. Check whether the cabin is private or shared, how many berths it includes and which facilities are provided. A cabin category name alone does not establish that it suits every person in the party.
For a long sailing, prepare a small bag with documents, medication, clothes and essentials for the time on board. GNV says access to the garage is unavailable during navigation. Do not leave something essential in the car on the assumption that you can return later.
If travelling with a pet or needing assistance, confirm the exact ship's facilities and applicable travel conditions before paying. A pet-friendly cabin or suitable access may need a separate reservation. Avoid assuming the availability of a service from another vessel's photograph.
Weather, arrival and a workable fallback
Check the operator's travel updates before leaving for the terminal and again if conditions change. A short crossing is still exposed to weather and operational disruption. Do not organise an essential onward connection around the most optimistic arrival time.
Tell the accommodation the realistic arrival range, allowing for disembarkation and formalities. For a late arrival, confirm room access and onward transport. If a departure is cancelled or changed, use the operator's actual alternatives and fare terms before independently buying a replacement.
Our guide to when to visit Morocco helps match the arrival with your intended region and activities. Climate on the Atlantic coast, in inland cities and in the mountains is not one interchangeable holiday condition.

Make the decision with two complete options
Keep two candidates, each with the port pair, date, full party price, vehicle, accommodation, check-in requirement and onward journey. Compare time and cost to the intended destination. That prevents a cheap sea section from hiding a difficult land section.
Use our independent trip planning guide to connect the crossing with the rest of the stay. Leave the first day's commitments realistic after a long passage, even when the ferry itself offers a comfortable cabin.
In RoadMe, you can work out a complete personal trip plan connecting your interests, visits and rest more conveniently. Try organising the whole stay in the app at a pace that fits your actual port arrival.
Choose the route for its complete journey and correct arrival port. Tarifa, Algeciras, Almería and Sète answer different travel situations; Tangier Ville, Tanger Med and Nador are not interchangeable endpoints.
