Dubai nol Card: Silver, Gold, Fares and Top-Ups

For ordinary sightseeing by Dubai Metro, tram and city bus, a nol Silver card is a practical starting choice. It holds credit from which eligible fares are deducted. Choose Gold if you specifically want the Gold Class cabins on the Metro and tram, and compare a Red Ticket for occasional journeys. The important details are the included starting balance, zones, top-up method and whether newly purchased credit is actually ready to use.

This guide uses RTA's published information checked on 25 October 2026. It separates three amounts often confused in travel advice: the fare for a journey, the minimum balance needed to travel and the minimum amount you can add through a particular top-up channel.

Which nol card should a visitor choose?

Try RoadMe to build a complete personal Dubai trip around your interests, dates and preferred pace. Planning the days together in the app is much more convenient than collecting scattered attraction lists, and helps you identify the journeys to check with RTA.

Silver is the regular reusable card. RTA lists it at AED 25 including AED 19 of usable balance, with five-year validity. The purchase price is not all travel credit. Buying the card also does not purchase an unlimited pass: ordinary eligible journeys deduct their fares until you add a separately applicable travel product.

Gold has the same listed AED 25 purchase price and AED 19 starting balance, but provides access to Gold Class on the Metro and tram at a premium fare. Do not select it merely because its purchase price matches Silver. The ongoing class fare matters more than the colour of the plastic.

The Red Ticket is a paper product for selected journeys or daily passes, rather than the same stored-value purse as Silver. RTA lists an AED 2 media price; the travel product costs extra. Its published capacity is up to ten journeys or five daily passes, with validity conditions. Ask for the product and zones you need instead of treating the red paper itself as a ready-to-use all-day ticket.

A personal Blue card and registered Silver or Gold cards have additional services and conditions. Do not assume that being a visitor with a foreign student card automatically qualifies you for a concession. RTA also lists a separate nol Travel product with commercial offers: the word “Travel” does not mean it is the ordinary Silver card or an unlimited sightseeing pass.

What a nol journey costs

RTA calculates the ordinary transport fare by the zones travelled. Its published Silver rates are shown below. These are journey fares, not the amount a machine requires you to add to your balance. Check the full route and transfers rather than estimating the price from the straight-line distance between two attractions.

Zones travelledSilver ordinary farePractical check
Within one zoneAED 3Confirm that the complete journey stays within it
Two adjacent zonesAED 5Include the zones used by connecting services
More than two zonesAED 7.50Do not confuse this fare with a top-up minimum

Gold Class on the Metro and tram carries a surcharge that makes the corresponding class rates double the regular rates in RTA's comparison. This does not mean every bus, boat or purchase made with a Gold card is automatically charged as a Gold Class journey. Check the particular service and fare instead of extending the cabin rule to everything the card can pay for.

Red Ticket fares differ from Silver fares, and a travel pass has its own coverage and validity. When comparing costs, use the actual product you will buy. A headline saying “from AED 3” does not establish the price of an airport journey, a ferry crossing or a day's unlimited travel.

For a combined Metro and bus journey, RTA publishes a thirty-minute transfer limit between checkout from one mode and check-in on the next. It also lists a maximum journey duration of 180 minutes and up to three transfers under the relevant rules. An extended meal or sightseeing stop should not be assumed to preserve one continuous fare.

Where to buy and how to use the card

Use an RTA ticket office, an appropriate ticket vending machine or an authorised sales agent. Confirm the card type and usable opening balance before payment. At a station, ask staff if you are unsure whether you are buying a new card, loading money or adding a particular pass. Those actions can have different conditions.

Each passenger needs their own valid means of travel. Keep the intended card available and present one card to the reader, rather than several contactless cards together. At entry, wait for the reader's confirmation before proceeding. Keep the same card until the journey is complete.

Check out as required at the end of the journey, including on buses. Without a completed exit record, the system may not calculate the intended fare. An open gate or a quiet stop is not a reason to omit a required tap. If the reader rejects the card, follow its signal and ask staff rather than walking through without a valid check-in.

RTA states that the card must have at least AED 7.50 available to use public transport. That is the travel-balance requirement, not the minimum value of every top-up. Allow enough for the actual journey as well, particularly when selecting Gold Class, and review the balance before the return trip.

Top-up minimums depend on where you add money

There is no single minimum that describes every nol top-up channel. RTA's current service information distinguishes Metro machines from Metro ticket offices and several app or online options. Choose the channel before deciding how much to add, especially near the end of a short stay.

ChannelPublished minimum top-upBefore travelling
Metro ticket vending machineAED 20Complete the card-writing step and check confirmation
Metro ticket officeAED 50Ask the agent to confirm the usable balance
nol Pay, S'hail, RTA website and selected other channelsAED 5Instant NFC loading and pending online credit work differently

These examples are not an exhaustive list of channels. Their minimums do not override each other: a smaller online option does not require a Metro machine to accept that same amount. RTA's Metro-machine notice also distinguishes a newly purchased card's included balance from a later top-up transaction.

At a machine, place the card as instructed, select the top-up option and amount, pay, and keep the card in position until loading is confirmed. Removing it immediately after payment can interrupt the operation. Retain the receipt when useful, especially if the balance does not match the transaction.

Check the official app or site identity before entering payment details. A search advertisement or a page using the nol name is not enough to identify an authorised service. Your bank card's acceptance should be confirmed for the actual payment, with an appropriate alternative available if it is declined.

Why an online payment can still leave the card unusable

With some remote top-ups, payment and activation are separate stages. RTA says a top-up made by entering the card's Tag ID can require forty-five minutes to four hours before the credit is ready for the supported activation step. A successful bank payment does not mean that a physical card already contains the updated balance.

Complete activation through an approved option, such as the relevant NFC app procedure, a Metro gate or a supported solar top-up machine, following the instructions for your channel. Read the actual confirmation. If you are about to take a bus, do not rely on the bus validator to activate pending online credit: RTA's current FAQ explicitly says it cannot do that.

NFC top-ups in the supported app workflow can be immediately usable after the second card tap. Keep the card against the phone for the full process, including the final write-back. Reading the card once, paying and closing the app is not necessarily the completed operation.

If you need to travel now and remote credit is still pending, ask staff about an immediate supported option. Avoid repeatedly paying for the same intended amount without understanding whether the earlier payment is waiting for activation. Keep the transaction reference, time, amount and card identifier for any support request.

Physical nol, phone top-ups and virtual nol are different

An app that reads and tops up a plastic card does not necessarily turn the phone into the card you can tap at a gate. The physical card remains the travel medium unless you have issued a supported virtual product. Likewise, a screenshot of the balance or payment receipt does not replace the actual card at entry.

RTA lists virtual nol support for compatible Samsung and Huawei phones, with specified Huawei watch support. Do not assume that installing nol Pay on any phone, or having ordinary NFC or Apple Wallet, gives access to the same virtual card. Check your exact model and current service requirements before relying on phone-only travel.

For a short visit, the physical card can be simpler when you do not have the required account or compatible device. Some official online channels have their own login and verification steps. Select a working option rather than making your first ride depend on creating an unfamiliar account at the last minute.

Travel passes: buy for the journeys you actually need

RTA offers travel-pass products with defined zones, class and duration. Its published conditions allow anonymous Silver and Gold cards to use a seven-day pass product; longer periods require the appropriate registered card. Do not select a monthly product assuming all anonymous tourist cards can load it.

Compare the pass cost with the fares of journeys that really fall within its coverage. Time spent at a museum, an indoor attraction or a beach does not generate transport savings. A quiet day with one outward and one return journey can have a different answer from a day involving several areas.

For any daily product, confirm the medium, zones, class and start and end of validity at purchase. A label saying “day” should not be silently converted into a promise of twenty-four hours from first use. The paper media price is separate from the loaded travel entitlement.

Nor does a transport pass automatically include every ferry, private service, attraction admission or inter-emirate journey. A nol card can sometimes pay for a service that remains outside the pass's inclusive fares. Acceptance as a payment method and inclusion in unlimited travel are different questions.

Use RoadMe to work out a personal day-by-day Dubai plan with the sights and pace you enjoy. Having the whole trip organised in the app makes it easier to compare transport against real plans, instead of buying a pass around an imaginary number of journeys.

Fit transport into a comfortable Dubai day

Start with the places that matter to you and check connections between their actual entrances. A station name containing an attraction does not establish a short walk to its admission point. Allow for exits, passages, changes and the last part of the journey, especially when heat or mobility needs make extra walking significant.

The guide to Old Dubai and an evening around Burj Khalifa illustrates the distinction between exploring within an area and travelling between separate districts. Use it to choose the kind of day you want, then check the current transport connection rather than copying an assumed fare.

For a waterfront crossing, verify the specific boat service and payment arrangement at its boarding point. Do not assume all traditional abras, ferries and private cruises use the same ticket. Similarly, possessing nol does not establish the operating hours of a particular airport connection or a service to another emirate.

For the general method of checking coverage and completing a journey, see public transport tickets, zones and validation abroad. The local RTA rules still determine what your selected Dubai product does.

Remaining balance, lost cards and leaving Dubai

Check the usable balance before the last planned journeys and avoid an unnecessarily large final top-up. RTA's refund procedure differs between anonymous, registered and personal cards. It is not a promise that any balance on any card can be returned instantly at any time.

For an active anonymous card in good condition with a small remaining balance, RTA describes a Metro ticket-office procedure involving surrender of the card and a fee. Its general fee schedule uses 2.5 per cent or AED 5, whichever is higher. Check the current amount and eligibility with staff before deciding whether the refund is worthwhile.

Anonymous-card refunds are not available through RTA's website without registering the card. Loss, damage and an expired card have different handling from a voluntary return of an active one. Do not plan to recover money from a missing anonymous card just because a procedure exists for registered products.

When requesting help, identify whether the issue is usable balance, pending credit, an incorrect journey charge or an expired card. Keep the relevant receipt and transaction reference. A payment screenshot explains a transaction but is not a replacement travel ticket or a guarantee of an approved refund.

Before your first ride

  • Choose Silver, Gold or the specific Red Ticket product for your needs.
  • Distinguish the card price from its included travel credit.
  • Check the route's zones and any separately charged service.
  • Have enough usable balance, not merely a pending payment.
  • Use a top-up channel whose minimum and activation steps suit you.
  • Tap the same intended card at the required entry and exit points.
  • Review the remaining balance before adding more near departure.

Once the card and loading method are settled, nol makes ordinary travel payments straightforward. The useful preparation is to know what you bought, what the current balance can pay for and what must still happen before the next reader accepts it.
