Singapore transport: SimplyGo, EZ-Link or a Tourist Pass?
For a short Singapore visit, the practical choice is between an accepted contactless bank card, a stored-value travel card and a Singapore Tourist Pass. SimplyGo is the payment system, not a competing unlimited pass: it can also be used with SimplyGo EZ-Link cards. Start with the payment method that actually works for you, then compare the cost of your useful journeys with an unlimited product.
Conditions and published prices checked on 27 October 2026. This guide concerns ordinary adult visitor travel on MRT, LRT and public buses. A supported card scheme is not a guarantee that every issuer or device works, and a tourism pass does not include all private or premium transport.
Choose a reliable way to pay first
Try RoadMe to develop a complete personal trip plan around your interests, dates and preferred pace in supported destinations. Keeping that plan in the app makes it easier to estimate useful journeys before deciding whether unlimited transport is worth buying.
If you already have an eligible bank card enabled for overseas contactless use, direct payment avoids buying and topping up another carrier. If you prefer separate travel spending or your bank card is unsuitable, compare a stored-value card. Consider the Tourist Pass when the planned eligible transport and convenience justify its fixed price.
Do not choose from the names alone. EZ-Link describes travel-card products, including a SimplyGo version; SimplyGo also supports accepted bank cards and mobile payment. These are overlapping ways of paying, not three exclusive brands that must be bought separately.
Our guide to transport tickets, zones and validation abroad explains the general method. Singapore's crucial local habit is to tap in and out with the same card or device, on buses as well as trains. An accepted first tap is only one part of the journey record.
The three options compared
| Option | Main advantage | What remains to check |
|---|---|---|
| Accepted contactless bank card | No separate travel-card purchase or advance top-up | Issuer eligibility, overseas use, fees and the same payment medium throughout |
| Stored-value travel card | Separate travel balance and a physical carrier | Carrier cost, remaining balance and the exact card type |
| Singapore Tourist Pass | Unlimited eligible transport during its valid service days | Consecutive days, excluded services and actual value for your planned journeys |
Choose per traveller, not just per household bank account. Every person needs a consistently identifiable payment medium for their own journey record. Do not repeatedly tap one physical card expecting it to behave like a shared bundle of bus tickets.
The same underlying bank card can appear on different devices, but that does not make them interchangeable within one person's trip. A phone, watch and physical plastic are distinct identifiers. Decide who will use which medium and keep that choice stable from entry to exit.
The cash difference is not the only factor. A separate physical card may be practical when phone battery is unreliable. Direct bank payment may be simpler when a compatible card is already available. Unlimited transport may reduce decisions, without necessarily lowering the final cost.
Bank cards: acceptance and the foreign-card fee
SimplyGo lists eligible contactless American Express, Mastercard, NETS and Visa bank cards, including qualifying foreign-issued cards. It specifically excludes some products, including Maestro/Cirrus debit cards. A contactless logo alone does not establish eligibility for every card or issuing bank.
Enable overseas usage where your issuer requires it and ensure sufficient available funds or credit. If a card is refused, check with the issuer instead of assuming that another tap will change its status. Have an available alternative before relying on it for your first transport journey.
For foreign-issued Mastercard and Visa cards, the published Foreign Bank Card Admin Fee is SGD 0.60 per day of use. This is separate from the fare and from any currency conversion or fees charged by the bank. It is not a daily unlimited-travel price.
A SimplyGo account is not required just to use an eligible contactless bank card. Registering can help with journey history, notifications and claims. Do not confuse an optional account for managing transactions with a mandatory purchase before every visitor can board.

Tap in and out with exactly the same medium
At MRT and LRT gates, tap the selected card or device on entry and again on exit. On buses, tap when boarding and when alighting. The system needs both parts to calculate the journey, so do not bring a habit from a city where only boarding is recorded.
If you enter with a physical bank card, leave with that physical bank card. If you use the card in a phone wallet, use the same wallet, card and phone on exit. Switching to a watch linked to the same bank account does not safely complete the original journey record.
Singapore's transport ministry explains that each device has its own digital identifier. The payment system cannot automatically reconcile all of them as one passenger's trip. That is why the distinction matters even when the bank statement eventually shows the same underlying card.
Remove the chosen card from other contactless cards and wait for the reader's acceptance. Presenting a whole wallet can cause a clash or incorrect recording. A phone case containing a travel card can also make your intended payment medium unclear.
Why the final fare may appear later
Bank-card transactions are processed in the background and can be grouped before appearing on a statement. The fare reader is not required to show an immediate final price. A missing price on that small display does not by itself mean the ride was free or the tap failed.
Use the SimplyGo transaction history or available ticketing kiosks to inspect journeys. A pending fare may still be awaiting consolidation under the distance-fare system. Compare the final record rather than treating the first provisional bank entry as the completed price of the whole day.
If the entry or exit is missing, or different devices were used, the recorded fare can differ from the intended journey. Keep the date, approximate time, service and medium used. Claims can be submitted through the operator's stated process; do not rely on automatic correction.
If the actual bank card is lost, report it to its issuer promptly. A fare enquiry and blocking a missing payment card are different tasks. Share private card information only through the official secure channels needed for the relevant request.
Stored value: separate the card cost from usable balance
SimplyGo lists a standard purchase at its ticket offices and service centres at SGD 10: SGD 5 is non-refundable card cost and SGD 5 is travel value. Other retailers or designs may have different prices. Check the package rather than assuming every souvenir card contains the same usable balance.
The travel value pays actual journeys. It is not an unlimited day product, and topping up adds spending value rather than extending a pass automatically. Keep enough balance for the required entry and journey instead of assuming any small positive amount is sufficient.
For SimplyGo EZ-Link specifically, the detailed FAQ gives a minimum travel value of SGD 3 and recommends keeping at least SGD 5. Other card-type guidance may use different entry requirements. Identify your exact product before turning one number into a rule for every older EZ-Link carrier.
In a comparison, separate the non-refundable carrier cost from value still available to use or potentially refund under the applicable process. The initial cash outlay is important, but it is not identical to the final cost of the transport you actually consume.
Topping up: confirm that travel can resume
SimplyGo EZ-Link can be topped up through the operator's app, ticketing kiosks and ticket offices using the available methods. Payment channels and minimum amounts differ. Do not assume that every visitor has access to each local banking option merely because it appears in the list.
The detailed FAQ distinguishes kiosk top-ups from other top-ups when the balance is below the minimum travel value. A kiosk top-up allows immediate use; another channel may require the specified card scan or kiosk step to enable immediate entry. Follow the actual completed status before retrying a gate.
SimplyGo EZ-Link fares and remaining balance are not displayed immediately on fare gates and bus readers. Check the app or ticketing equipment instead. This is part of account-based processing, not proof that no fare was deducted or that the card contains unlimited transport.
If you own an older card, check its expiry and type. Conversion to SimplyGo is a specific operation, not a compulsory tourist ritual. The FAQ says conversion is irreversible; do not start it casually when you only need help understanding a balance or buying travel for a few days.

The current Singapore Tourist Pass prices
| Ordinary pass | Published price | Validity to compare |
|---|---|---|
| One day | SGD 17 | From first use to the end of that service day |
| Two days | SGD 24 | Consecutive service days |
| Three days | SGD 29 | Consecutive service days |
| Four days | SGD 37 | Consecutive service days |
| Five days | SGD 45 | Consecutive service days |
Use the current ordinary product rather than mixing old price lists, souvenir charms and reseller bundles. Different packages can include different extras. Compare the product and collection conditions in the final purchase, especially when an online voucher must be exchanged for the physical pass.
The pass's fixed price can be attractive for convenience or intensive eligible travel. It is not automatically cheaper for a short visit. Estimate the actual pay-as-you-go cost first, including applicable foreign-bank-card fees or a stored-value carrier, then compare the same journeys.
Our trip budget guide helps avoid confusing initial outlay, usable balance and non-refundable spending. Do not call the whole stored-value purchase a consumed fare while ignoring that some of it remains available; likewise, unused unlimited days do not become refundable savings.
Service days are not rolling 24-hour periods
The Tourist Pass starts at first use and covers the remaining operation of that service day. It is not a rolling 24-hour product. A first journey late in the evening uses the first day, even if the next morning is when most of your sightseeing begins.
Two-, three-, four- and five-day passes run on consecutive days. A quiet day or a trip using excluded transport does not pause them. Compare buying a separate arrival journey with starting immediately when a late arrival would consume a largely unused first day.
The official FAQ describes service generally ending around midnight, while actual bus and train timings must be checked separately. Do not treat the pass as a promise that every line operates until the same minute. A valid product does not create a late-night departure.
After expiry the pass reverts to an EZ-Link card according to the product FAQ. That does not mean unlimited travel continues: further stored-value use requires the appropriate available value. Keep the difference between expired pass entitlement and reusable carrier clear.
What unlimited travel excludes
The ordinary Tourist Pass covers MRT, LRT and basic public bus services. It excludes premium or private services listed by the seller, including Sentosa Express, RWS8, the M2 Khatib bus and express buses. Singapore transport does not all belong to one unlimited product.
A reader accepting a stored-value or bank card on another service does not make that service included in the Tourist Pass. The medium can be accepted while a separate charge still applies. Check the particular ride before relying on the word unlimited.
Likewise, attraction entry, taxis and sightseeing products are separate purchases unless a specific bundle explicitly includes them. Do not compare a basic transport pass against a higher-priced attraction package without separating what each actually buys.
The ordinary Tourist Pass has no concessionary child or senior rate according to its FAQ. Other public-transport concession products have their own eligibility. For a family, investigate the actual applicable category rather than assuming the adult-pass calculation fits every traveller.

Make the first journey straightforward
Before entering, choose one functioning medium per traveller and decide how you will preserve it through exit. For direct bank payment, check eligibility and overseas use. For stored value, check balance. For a pass, check its first day and the service being boarded.
At a failed tap, move aside and ask station or transport staff rather than cycling through devices inside an unfinished journey. A replacement payment method may be needed, but the original record can still require assistance. Note what was used so the issue is understandable.
Let RoadMe work out your personal sightseeing plan around your interests and a comfortable pace in supported cities. Using it in the app makes nearby visits easier to combine, so you choose transport for a better trip rather than filling the day to use an unlimited pass.
Keep the chosen card or charged device accessible, tap out as carefully as you tap in, and review final records when necessary. Those habits matter more than choosing the product with the most familiar name. The right payment method is the reliable one covering the journeys you actually want to make.
