Prague public transport tickets: prices, passes and correct validation

Prague public transport tickets are mainly based on time: choose a 30-minute, 90-minute, 24-hour or 72-hour product for the covered area, then start it correctly. You can change between included services while the ticket remains valid. Buying a ticket and making it valid are separate steps, and the procedure depends on how you bought it.

For most short visits, the decision is between a paper ticket and the PID Lítačka app. In 2026 the app prices are lower, but a mobile ticket needs activation and a protective waiting period before use. An ordinary unstamped paper ticket needs one validation; a ticket issued with its validity already printed must not be stamped again.

Choose the time you need, not the number of vehicles

A short connection may fit a 30-minute ticket; a longer connection needs more time. Include the interchange and the entire journey, rather than assuming boarding just before expiry permits an unlimited continuation. For a busy day or several days of repeated travel, compare the longer tickets against the shorter tickets you would otherwise use.

RoadMe makes it more convenient to turn your interests into a personal trip plan, with visits arranged around your time and preferred pace. Try deciding what you actually want to explore before choosing a transport ticket, so the validity matches your days.

The city products discussed here are for Prague’s P, 0 and B zones. A ticket described as regional or for a certain number of outer zones is not automatically a Prague city ticket. For an excursion beyond the city, search the complete connection and check its proposed ticket instead of extending a city ticket by guesswork.

Prague ticket prices in 2026

The following ordinary full fares were checked in October 2026. The standard short-term adult category applies from the 15th birthday until the day before the 60th birthday. Discount or free-travel conditions must be checked separately. Prices are in Czech koruna: Kč and CZK refer to the same currency.

90 minutesCZK 46CZK 50
24 hoursCZK 140CZK 150
72 hoursCZK 340CZK 350

These are the 2026 prices, not the older figures still repeated in some guides. A price difference between paper and app is not evidence that one seller has made a mistake. Compare the same duration, area and passenger category through the channel you intend to use.

A 24-hour ticket is a continuous 24-hour product from the start of validity, and the 72-hour ticket works over a continuous 72 hours. They are not simply tickets ending at midnight on one or three calendar dates. Check your start against both arrival and departure days rather than counting hotel nights.

Paper tickets: stamp once, but first check what was issued

Ordinary unstamped tickets bought in advance from a ticket machine or a PID/DPP sales counter need a validation stamp on first use. In the Metro, do this before entering the paid area, not after reaching the platform. On a city tram or bus, validate immediately after boarding.

Insert the ticket in the indicated direction, following its arrow, and check that the stamp is readable. The stamp establishes the start of validity. Keep the ticket with you throughout the journey. Do not stamp it again when changing between covered services: a second stamp can invalidate it.

There is an important exception. Some sales terminals issue a ticket with its validity already printed. This includes tickets bought from the onboard contactless sales terminal and PID tickets issued at a České dráhy railway counter. These do not need another stamp. Read the issued ticket and its start time rather than treating every paper ticket identically.

If you want to save an unstamped ticket for another day, keep it separate from one already in use. When several people travel together, give each person the correct ticket and check each first validation. A purchase receipt is not a substitute for the actual ticket, and showing payment alone does not establish that the ticket was started correctly.

If a validator does not work, clarify the procedure with staff before travelling without a valid ticket. Do not add your own handwritten start time or assume a nearby open entrance means the paid area requires no validation. Follow the operator’s instructions for the actual service.

PID Lítačka: purchase, activate, wait until valid

Install the official app and check that you can open it and use your intended payment method before the first journey. For a short-term ticket, buying the ticket can leave it stored for later activation. A ticket sitting in the reserve is not yet permission to travel.

Choose activation deliberately: immediately after purchase, manually later, or for a planned start time where offered. Activating is irreversible. Confirm the ticket, area, duration and number of passengers before starting it, especially if several unused tickets are stored in the account.

Current PID instructions specify a one-minute protective period after immediate activation. During that period the ticket is not yet valid for ordinary use. Wait until the app shows actual validity before boarding or entering the Metro’s paid area. Do not activate only when an inspector appears, and do not confuse “active” with “already valid”.

Allow more practical preparation time than the bare countdown. An unsuccessful payment, weak connection or incorrect ticket selection can take longer to resolve. If the tram arrives while the ticket is still in its protective period, wait for a suitable later service rather than assuming a few seconds cannot matter.

Internet access is needed for buying and activating the ticket. After activation, the actual ticket can be used without a continuing internet connection, but the device must remain working and sufficiently charged for inspection. Keep the ticket available in the app; do not assume an image of a receipt or a static screenshot replaces the operator’s display.

You can buy and activate tickets for fellow passengers, then present each ticket separately. That is different from using one individual ticket for a group. Keep the group together if one phone holds everyone’s valid tickets, or use the operator’s permitted handover process before activation where appropriate.

App daily capping is different from a rolling 24-hour ticket

PID Lítačka also describes daily fare capping from app version 3.8.0. It concerns eligible 30- and 90-minute Prague tickets for P+0+B activated chronologically in the app. The ordinary full-fare threshold is CZK 140. It is not a universal cap on bank-card spending or paper tickets.

When eligible ticket use reaches the threshold, the app can extend validity or offer payment of only the necessary difference. The resulting capped entitlement is valid until 01:30 the following day. That is a different time window from a separately bought rolling 24-hour ticket.

The conditions matter for groups. Simultaneously activated tickets for several passengers do not create one capped individual travel day. The app’s conditions also restrict overlapping validity. Read the actual offer shown for your tickets; do not buy several tickets at once expecting a refund after crossing a total.

For a visitor who already knows they need travel into the following afternoon, the continuous 24-hour ticket may answer a different need from capping that ends overnight. Compare usable time as well as the amount. If the app does not offer a capped entitlement for your case, do not assume it has silently replaced the ticket.

Buying on board: a payment terminal is not a ticket validator

City trams, buses and trolleybuses have contactless ticket-sales terminals. PID lists 30-minute, 90-minute and 24-hour city tickets among the available products. Do not rely on these onboard terminals to buy a 72-hour ticket. Prepare that product through another suitable channel.

The onboard sales terminal accepts contactless payment and issues a ticket already valid from purchase. Keep that ticket; the bank card used to buy it is not automatically a tap-in/tap-out travel medium. This distinction is useful if you are used to a city where touching a bank card at a gate is the whole fare procedure.

A machine selling a ticket and a device stamping a ticket perform different jobs. If you already have an unstamped ticket, use the validator. If buying at the onboard terminal, follow the purchase and collect the issued ticket. Do not buy another ticket merely because you see a second machine nearby.

Check your card’s real compatibility and an alternative purchase method before relying on an onboard sale. Some older station machines accept only Czech coins, while other machines accept cards. Do not assume every machine has identical payment options or that a city tram driver sells an ordinary ticket for cash.

Metro, trains, airport services and Petřín: check the exceptions

A Prague ticket can cover included Metro, tram, bus and other PID services within its area and time conditions. Integrated trains require an eligible PID ticket for the relevant section, normally in second class. Not every train passing through Prague is included, and a city ticket does not pay for an unlimited journey beyond the city.

SMS tickets have additional limitations: they are not valid on PID trains or suburban lines. DPP’s SMS purchase option is for numbers of Czech mobile operators. A travel eSIM with internet access is not proof that it can buy this SMS product. Use a suitable app or paper product when those limitations matter.

The AE Airport Express has its own fare arrangements and is excluded from ordinary city PID tickets. A regular included public-transport connection to the airport is a different service. Identify the actual connection instead of assuming the word “airport” either includes or excludes every possible bus.

The Petřín funicular returned to trial passenger operation on 22 September 2026 after reconstruction. Standard 30- and 90-minute city tickets do not cover it. Valid 24-hour and 72-hour Prague tickets include it, as do other qualifying entitlements. Check live operation before depending on it.

Without an eligible inclusive product or free-travel entitlement, a separate single funicular ride costs CZK 100, or CZK 90 in the app. That separate ticket is a different product from a 90-minute city ticket. Do not confuse the duration with a price simply because both use the number 90.

The funicular began operating in 1891, but the current reconstructed service uses new cars. Old photographs are not a reliable guide to today’s vehicle or boarding arrangement. Following reopening, the descending journey does not stop at Nebozízek. Check accessibility separately: the service is not currently wheelchair accessible.

Discounts, groups and practical preparation

Check eligibility before choosing a reduced fare. Prague’s short-term concession for ages 60 to under 65 is different from student or youth arrangements for longer subscriptions and regional travel. Speaking a language or carrying a foreign student card does not by itself establish entitlement to every discount shown in a fare table.

Children under 15 and passengers aged 65 or over can qualify for free city travel under the required proof-of-age conditions. Bring the specified original evidence and check the exact category, especially for a child or for integrated trains. Do not apply a city concession unchanged to a regional journey.

Plan the whole group’s ticket access. A charged phone, readable paper ticket and age document should remain accessible when someone has a suitcase or pushchair. If you need step-free travel, check the station entrance, interchange and current lift status; a line’s presence on a map does not establish the complete accessible path.

With RoadMe, it is easier to develop a personal plan for the whole group’s interests and pace. Try balancing longer journeys with nearby visits and breaks, then choose ticket durations around that plan and verify the current transport connections.

Our guide to public transport tickets and validation abroad explains the general distinctions behind these local procedures. For a late flight, also prepare your night transfer and accommodation access rather than relying on the daytime network alone.

A short check before entering the paid area

  • Correct area, duration and passenger category selected.
  • Ordinary paper ticket stamped once, or already printed validity checked.
  • App ticket activated, protective period finished and actual validity visible.
  • Each passenger has a valid ticket or documented concession.
  • Phone and ticket remain available for inspection.
  • Any train, AE or funicular exception checked for the chosen product.

The aim is a ticket valid for the complete journey, started by the correct procedure. Once those points are settled, you can use the included transfers without buying again at every change of vehicle.
