Offline Maps for Travel: What to Download and Check Before Your Trip

Download the areas you will visit while you still have internet access, then test them with both Wi-Fi and mobile data switched off. A useful test checks more than a visible map: you should be able to retrieve your accommodation, request fresh directions and use the travel mode you actually need.

Start with your arrival airport or station, accommodation and sightseeing areas. Include the journeys between them. This guide covers preparation for city walks and everyday transfers, with a separate check for location services.

Choose offline functions for your journey

Before choosing an app, decide what you need it to do. Reading street names, finding an entrance, receiving walking directions and navigating a drive are separate tasks. An app may display a downloaded area without supporting all of them offline.

Sketch your sightseeing days in RoadMe around your interests and preferred pace. Use that plan to identify the cities and neighbourhoods you need to prepare.

Check the app’s support for your destination, phone and travel mode. Downloads and offline features can vary by region and software version.

Google Maps supports downloaded areas, but offline directions are for driving. Walking, cycling and public transport directions are unavailable without a connection, as are live traffic and alternative driving routes. The entire drive must fit within downloaded coverage. Downloads are unavailable in some regions. On Android, open your profile picture or initial, then Offline maps → Select your own map to choose an area.

Apple Maps offers offline downloads on iPhones running iOS 17 or later in supported areas. Offline directions include several travel modes, including walking. Choose an area through its offline maps section; the app displays the download size before you save it.

Organic Maps provides downloaded maps, offline search and walking, cycling and driving navigation. Check the specific addresses, roads and mode you intend to use rather than assuming every destination will have the detail you need.

For a city walk, choose an app that supports walking directions offline. For a trip along trails, also inspect the paths and terrain information. A path drawn on a map does not establish that it is currently open.

Cover the journey, including arrival and transfers

Download for your itinerary rather than the destination name alone. An airport outside the city, accommodation in a suburb or a day trip across a regional boundary may need additional coverage.

ArrivalAirport or station, accommodation and the journey between them
City explorationPlanned neighbourhoods, accommodation and places you may visit along the way

Follow the actual roads when checking the boundary. Two pins inside a downloaded area do not prove that the route between them is covered. A river crossing or ring road may take you outside it. Leave a practical margin around your journey, balanced against available phone storage.

Planning example: you arrive at an out-of-town airport, stay in the centre and spend a day at a nearby lake. Mark all three locations, inspect the connecting journeys and choose downloads covering those areas. Saving only the central sightseeing district leaves two parts of the trip unprepared.

Some apps offer predefined regions rather than a rectangle you can adjust. In that case, identify every region your route crosses. For an international journey, prepare the relevant areas on both sides of the border.

Confirm that downloads have finished

Opening a place while connected is different from downloading it for offline use. Do not rely on whatever the app may have retained from an earlier browsing session.

While you have a connection:

  1. Check the phone’s available storage.
  2. Open the app’s download or offline map management section.
  3. Select the necessary areas or regions.
  4. Wait for each download to finish.
  5. Confirm that the maps appear as saved rather than pending or incomplete.
  6. Review any update or expiry information shown.

Automatic updates are useful, but check the actual download status before departure. If the app has a setting that removes unused downloads, review that as well. An area saved months ago may no longer be on the phone.

Prepare every device that will need a map. A download on your companion’s phone or another device does not establish that yours is ready.

Keep your first destinations easy to retrieve

Save your accommodation’s name, full address in the local language and the appropriate entrance when known. A pin in the middle of a large station, museum or hotel complex may not lead you to the entrance you need.

Add the meeting point for a booked activity, the station for your next departure and a useful return point after sightseeing. Then save the main places you plan to visit.

Check those entries without a connection. Favourites, recent searches and downloaded coverage are different things: a saved pin alone does not mean the surrounding map is available offline.

Also put the accommodation address in a locally accessible note. You can show it to a driver or ask for help even if map search does not recognise the spelling. For the wider preparation process, see how to prepare your phone for travel, including files, settings and backups.

Test directions and location separately

A map you can see, or directions created earlier while connected, do not prove that a new request will work offline. Test the actions you expect to perform during the trip.

First, test the destination’s downloaded map:

  1. Switch off Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  2. Close and reopen the map app.
  3. Move to the downloaded destination and zoom in to the streets you need.
  4. Retrieve the accommodation or search for its address.
  5. Set both ends of a journey within the destination area, such as the station and accommodation. Enter the starting point manually rather than using your current location at home.
  6. Request new directions using your intended travel mode.
  7. Change the destination and request directions again.

You are checking map access and route planning, rather than navigation from your home to another country. If the app only starts turn-by-turn guidance from your current position, use its route preview for the distant destination.

Next, check positioning where you actually are. Keep location services enabled and allow precise location access where that setting is provided. Satellite positioning can work without an internet connection on a phone with the appropriate receiver, but signal conditions affect the result.

Use a downloaded map of your current area for this check and try an open outdoor location. Buildings and indoor conditions can make positioning more difficult. A successful preview of a route in your holiday destination does not test satellite reception there.

For city exploration, download your destination in RoadMe while you have internet access. Its maps and navigation are available offline after the city download; include them in your pre-trip rehearsal.

Restore the connectivity settings you need after testing. If an action failed, reconnect, address that specific problem and repeat it before departure.

Troubleshoot the part that failed

Identify whether the issue concerns coverage, search, directions or positioning.

SymptomCheck first
Streets are visible but walking directions failWhether that travel mode works offline in this app
Directions between two places failCoverage along the whole journey, including roads between the endpoints
An address cannot be foundLocal spelling, the saved pin and the relevant downloaded area
Your position is missing or inaccurateLocation permissions and satellite reception conditions
A previously saved map is unavailableDownload status, expiry and automatic removal settings

If a required feature needs a connection, arrange another way to complete that task. You might prepare an app with offline walking directions and keep public transport transfer details in a separate downloaded note.

Do not expect a disconnected phone to receive fresh traffic conditions, service changes or live transport delays. A downloaded map may show stops or support journey planning without receiving current updates. Stored opening hours also do not establish that a venue is open today.

Keep a small arrival backup

A screenshot of nearby streets can help if map search or the app fails but your photos still open. A paper address and a small sketch of the approach also remain useful when the phone runs out of power. These do not replace a zoomable map or new directions, but they give you a starting point for asking the way.

Before leaving, confirm four things: the required areas are downloaded, essential places are accessible offline, fresh directions work in the chosen mode and location settings have been checked separately. If you add a destination, change accommodation or plan a new excursion, review the download boundaries and repeat the relevant checks.
