Nantes public transport: Naolib tickets, app and visitor options
Before buying a Nantes transport ticket, check the day of travel. Ordinary Naolib trams, buses and Navibus are free for everyone from Saturday 00:00 to Sunday 23:59, with no ordinary ticket needed. On weekdays, compare a one-hour ticket at €1.80 with a 24-hour ticket at €6.80. The airport shuttle is the important exception: its specific €10 ticket is still required at weekends.
Naolib brings together Nantes's mobility services, but a transport ticket does not automatically pay for every bicycle, car park or regional journey shown in its app. For a visitor, the useful distinction is between the service, the geographical boundary and the ticket format. Prices and conditions here were checked on 27 October 2026.
Start with your dates and accommodation address
Let RoadMe work out a personal travel plan around your interests and preferred pace. Organising the visit in the app makes it easier to give important places enough time, then choose the transport that fits the way you want to explore.
Write down which journeys fall on paid weekdays and which fall during the free weekend. A Friday-to-Sunday stay is not the same purchase problem as three weekdays. Nor does a Sunday arrival make Monday's journeys free.
Then check the accommodation address. Naolib's ordinary coverage relates to the metropolitan area, not every place described in a booking listing as “near Nantes”. A city stay and a regional rail trip should remain separate entries in your planning.
| Visitor's situation | First option to consider | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary travel on Saturday or Sunday | Free weekend network | Airport shuttle excluded |
| A few weekday journeys | One-hour tickets | Work within the ticket's actual validity |
| Several separate paid travel periods | 24-hour ticket | Not an airport shuttle ticket |
| A group travelling together | Compare individual tickets with the four-person product | Check group conditions before buying |
| Rail beyond the metropolitan area | The appropriate regional rail ticket | City coverage does not extend indefinitely |
You do not need to open a resident's annual subscription simply to make an ordinary visit. Begin with the available occasional tickets and the days that actually need payment.
Free weekends: what you can use without a ticket
The free period runs from the start of Saturday to the end of Sunday. It covers the ordinary tram, bus and Navibus network. Visitors do not need to establish Nantes residence to use this weekend arrangement.
For ordinary weekend journeys, there is no need to buy or validate a ticket. The app may still allow purchase of tickets for another day, while ordinary mTicket validation is unavailable during the free period. That does not mean the city network is broken or that you need to keep trying to activate a weekday ticket.
Keep the airport shuttle and regional exceptions separate. A free ordinary bus does not turn every service carrying the Naolib name into a free journey. Equally, the airport shuttle remaining paid does not mean you must buy a shuttle ticket for unrelated travel around the city.
A weekday public holiday is not automatically part of the free weekend. Look at the actual day rather than using “holiday” and “weekend” interchangeably. If your stay continues into Monday, include that day's necessary paid journeys.
For example, someone arriving Friday afternoon and leaving Sunday evening may need only Friday's ordinary tickets plus any separately chosen airport service. Buying daily tickets for all three dates would answer a different question from the journey they are making.
The main occasional tickets and their prices
| Product | Price | When to compare it |
|---|---|---|
| Ticket 1h | €1.80 | One paid hour of ordinary travel under its conditions |
| Ticket 1h x10 | €17.80 | Several one-hour uses, potentially across a group |
| Ticket 24h | €6.80 | Repeated journeys during a paid 24-hour period |
| Ticket 24h 4 personnes | €15 | Compare for up to four people travelling together |
| Ticket navette aéroport | €10 | The specific airport shuttle service, including weekends |
The one-hour and 24-hour city products cover the relevant tram, bus, Navibus and TER journeys within the Nantes metropolitan boundary, excluding the airport shuttle. Do not read the presence of TER as a ticket for unrestricted regional rail travel.
Four separate one-hour purchases total €7.20, above the €6.80 day ticket. Three total €5.40, below it. Count paid one-hour periods, not every vehicle boarding: a connection inside an existing valid hour is not automatically another purchase.
The block of ten costs slightly less than buying ten one-hour tickets separately. Its main practical question is whether you will actually use the units. Do not buy a larger product to save a small amount if most of your stay falls during the free weekend.
For a group, compare the number of people who need tickets and whether they will stay together. Two individual day tickets total €13.60, below €15; three total €20.40, above it. That arithmetic is useful only if the four-person product's actual conditions fit your group. Do not assume it becomes separate tickets for companions travelling independently.

One hour and 24 hours: read the active period
A one-hour ticket is useful when the relevant journeys and connections fit its validity. It should not be confused with an unlimited day pass or a ticket valid until you eventually return to the hotel. Keep the displayed start and remaining time in mind.
Naolib permits connections within the applicable hour. Separate the transport connection from a long visit in the middle: if you leave to spend several hours at an attraction, the earlier hour will not be waiting for you afterwards.
For the 24-hour product, check the actual active period instead of assuming “today until midnight”. Choose when to begin using it around the journeys that need payment. Buying a ticket in advance and activating it for travel are not necessarily the same step.
Do not assume that every late boarding creates an extra validity extension. Use the period shown and the product's instructions; if the proposed connection is right at expiry, allow a realistic margin or choose suitable coverage. A rule from another city's app may work differently.
A paid ticket's time should not be treated as a bank of hours automatically paused over a free weekend. Compare the real calendar and active period. If a plan contains Friday travel, a free weekend and Monday travel, work out those parts separately instead of assuming one 24-hour product stretches across them.
Contactless ticket: a reusable carrier, not any bankcard
The rechargeable contactless ticket replaces the old-style paper approach for the relevant products. It is a ticket carrier loaded with a fare product. The word “contactless” does not mean you can use any payment card as an ordinary Naolib ticket without a separate purchase.
Present the contactless ticket to the validator at each paid boarding and connection, and wait for the confirmation beep and green check. A connection does not remove the presentation step merely because the underlying hour remains valid.
Keep the carrier and use the appropriate machine to check remaining journeys or reload the same product type. The operator describes the carrier as free; the loaded journeys are what you are buying. Avoid discarding it after one use if you still need more travel.
The ten-journey product can be used for several people through the required individual validations. Validate for each passenger and repeat the appropriate group presentation at connections. It is not enough for one person to validate once while several companions board.
The operator warns against an accidental additional presentation that can consume another unit. Be deliberate about the number of passengers and watch the confirmation. If the group is separating, do not assume one shared carrier can be in several places at once.
Naolib mTicket: activate before boarding
The app offers ticket purchase as well as transport information. Set it up before the first necessary journey and confirm that the product you bought is visible. A successful payment notification is not the active ticket you will show during a check.
For a paid mTicket journey, activate or validate on the platform before boarding, as the official guide instructs. Do not wait until you are seated. Open the active-ticket section and check the QR code, date and remaining time.
The guide currently refers to the shop and ticket sections of the app. Interface labels can change, but the essential distinction remains: an unused purchase and an active ticket are different states. Find the active product before approaching the vehicle.
For ordinary free-weekend journeys, do not try to force activation when it is unavailable. Airport and relevant regional products retain their own conditions. The correct action depends on the product, not just on whether you have opened the same app.
Choose the format you can use reliably. If a phone ticket creates avoidable difficulties, official machines, retailers and the mobility office offer other sales channels. Compare ticket access and presentation as well as price.

Tram, bus, Navibus and TER: the boundary is part of the ticket
The metropolitan network combines several modes, so changing from a tram to another covered service need not mean buying a completely unrelated product. Still, check that the entire journey is inside the relevant perimeter and within the ticket's time.
The newer Citadis trams received a Janus design award in 2024. Their development involved passenger input, making the vehicles an interesting example of how everyday transport design responds to the people using it.
Navibus is part of the ordinary public transport offer; it should not be confused with every sightseeing cruise on the Loire. A boat advertised to tourists may have its own fare. Read the service name rather than assuming all vessels are covered.
For TER, the geographical condition is especially important. The free weekend applies to a rail journey entirely within the metropolitan area. If the regional journey is not wholly within that boundary, the operator says to buy the appropriate SNCF TER ticket for the whole journey before boarding.
Do not calculate an imaginary small supplement simply by subtracting an assumed free city segment. A station having “Nantes” somewhere in a tourism description does not establish the fare boundary. Check the actual origin and destination.
Our guide to public transport abroad, tickets, zones and validation explains how these checks fit together. Separate time, area and service rather than reducing the choice to one ticket price.
The airport shuttle remains a separate product
The shuttle's €10 fare still applies on Saturday and Sunday. Its airport ticket also gives access to the covered city network within its stated one-hour conditions. That does not turn it into an unlimited day ticket or cover every airport journey you might make later.
Ordinary bus connections to the airport exist as a different travel choice. Compare their actual connection, time and ticket conditions with the shuttle rather than assuming the word “airport” automatically requires the shuttle product. This guide does not prescribe an airport route.
If you hold Pass Nantes, the operator states that its included airport shuttle journeys are one outward and one return, with the required activation in the Pass Nantes app. Check what you actually purchased; an ordinary Naolib day ticket and a tourist pass are not the same product.
Follow the current boarding and sales information for the service you choose. Stop locations and connections can change, so a photograph or an old airport plan is not a substitute for the day's operating information.
Parking and tourist passes: avoid paying twice
If arriving by car, do not treat a standard day ticket as a parking product. P+R has its own rules, including the connection with public transport use. Weekend parking arrangements still require the relevant entry ticket or validation procedure.
Free weekend P+R should not be read as permission to leave a vehicle indefinitely or as free airport parking. Check the individual site's conditions and permitted duration. Transport being free does not make every parking barrier irrelevant.
Pass Nantes is a tourist product with its own inclusions, while the occasional transport tickets answer the narrower question of moving around. Before buying both, identify what the pass already covers on your actual dates. The free weekend may change the value of a transport inclusion.
Keep the wider stay personal with RoadMe: the app can develop a complete travel plan around your interests and pace. It is more convenient to organise the discoveries you want first, then let the practical journeys follow.

A practical decision before setting off
Ordinary weekend travel: use the free arrangement within its limits. A few weekday hours: compare one-hour tickets. Several paid periods: compare 24 hours. A group: check individual prices against the four-person product and how you will travel together.
Before boarding on a paid day, confirm the fare product, active time and geographical coverage. Present the contactless ticket as required or activate the mTicket before boarding. Keep airport shuttle and regional rail as separate checks.
Our guide to planning a travel budget with easy-to-miss expenses helps keep the complete cost visible. In Nantes, the useful saving may be buying a suitable ticket for the paid part of the stay and none for the ordinary free-weekend journeys.
