Moscow’s Troika card: buying, topping up and choosing a ticket

Traveller holding a classic-design Troika card

Moscow's Troika is a reusable transport card, not a sightseeing pass and not automatically an unlimited ticket. For a visitor, its value is straightforward: one familiar carrier can hold stored-value credit or an appropriate travel ticket. The important decisions are what to load, where the ticket is valid and how a remote payment reaches the physical card.

Checked on 27 October 2026. This guide focuses on ordinary tourist journeys and short stays, rather than every resident subscription. Fares below are a dated 2026 snapshot. Check the current tariff before purchase, especially for travel in a new year or beyond the central MCD zone.

The card, the wallet and a pass are different

Try RoadMe before choosing your travel product: in supported cities, the app works out a complete personal trip plan around interests, dates and pace. Using that plan in the app makes it much easier to estimate useful journeys without organising the holiday merely to consume a pass.

The plastic is the carrier. Koshelek, usually translated as Wallet, is the stored-value ticket that deducts the applicable fare. A one-day or three-day Ediny ticket is a separate entitlement recorded on an appropriate carrier. Buying the plastic alone does not buy a day of travel.

Troika can have stored-value credit and recorded tickets. The operator explains that a valid applicable pass takes priority; the wallet becomes relevant according to the remaining products and balance. Adding money does not necessarily mean the next trip will be charged from that money instead of an existing pass.

Where to obtain an ordinary card

The metro lists ticket offices and appropriate ticket machines as purchase points, along with other official transport outlets. For a first visit, asking at a metro ticket office for an ordinary Troika and the desired product can be simpler than starting with a souvenir accessory or personalised edition.

The ordinary card's published deposit is RUB 150. This is separate from the amount loaded for journeys. Ask what the transaction includes and check the receipt: carrier deposit, wallet top-up and a recorded pass are different lines of value.

The metro describes return of the deposit for an eligible returned card within five years of receipt, under its conditions. That is not the same as automatic refund of all unused credit, and it does not establish that a themed accessory has the same refundable price.

Cards exist in different designs. The classic blue horse design shown in the illustration is a recognisable example, not a promise that every outlet stocks that edition. The recorded ticket and working card matter more than the printed picture.

Useful 2026 price benchmarks

The figures below are published ordinary adult examples in roubles. They are not a complete menu of concessions, long subscriptions or regional rail fares. A deposit is shown separately because comparing it with one journey otherwise gives a misleading result.

For an overseas payment account, do not assume your bank's conversion will match a search-engine currency estimate. More importantly, confirm a workable payment method. A familiar international card logo is not proof that your particular foreign-issued card will work in Russia.

Cash at an appropriate staffed outlet can be worth planning as a practical fallback where accepted. If you cannot complete an online payment, repeatedly trying the same unsupported method is not a transport plan. Sort out the purchase before joining a busy gate queue.

Wallet or short unlimited ticket?

Choose from actual travel, not the number of days printed on your hotel reservation. Wallet credit is easy to understand when you make only a few independently charged journeys. A day ticket can be useful for repeated travel, but walking between nearby places may reduce the number you really need.

The one-day product runs for 24 hours from first validation, rather than automatically ending at midnight. The official one-day and three-day conditions require beginning use within ten days of sale, including the purchase day. Do not buy them months ahead assuming they can wait indefinitely.

One-day and three-day unlimited tickets have a 20-minute repeat-entry interval. A group should not treat one unlimited card as several people's simultaneous passes. Using one appropriate card per traveller also keeps MCD entries and exits unambiguous.

A rough comparison must allow for transfer rules, rather than counting every boarding as a separately charged full fare. If several boardings qualify for a combined or free transfer, simply multiplying the base fare can overstate what wallet use would cost.

Our guide to building a travel budget explains how to compare the complete expense. Here that means the same destinations, zones and travel period for each option. An expensive pass is not a saving merely because it allows more rides than you intend to take.

Buying a pass is not the same as topping up the wallet

Specify whether you want money on the wallet or a particular ticket recorded. The transport portal's web top-up form says it loads Wallet credit; it is not a general shop for paying for every other ticket from that stored balance.

Do not transfer money to the wallet assuming a cashier or machine must then turn the whole sum into the unlimited ticket you intended. Ask about the correct purchase route first. A positive balance and a valid day pass are different states of the card.

Where you buy at a ticket office or suitable machine with the card physically present, payment and recording may be completed together. Read the result and retain the receipt. A bank charge alone does not establish which product was successfully written.

If a pass already exists, check its validity and priority before adding another. The operator's rules allow multiple products in defined combinations, but that does not mean every product begins immediately or that the system will choose whichever price you prefer on the next trip.

Remote top-up: activation has become easier

A remote payment must still be recorded on the physical carrier. However, older advice that every traveller must always find a yellow information terminal first is no longer a complete description of the service.

A metro notice dated 25 May 2026 says automatic recording of remote top-ups works at all metro and MCC turnstiles while paying for the journey. The current transport-portal top-up page also lists gate recording, ticket machines and surface-transport validators among the options.

Follow the actual device's instructions and wait for a successful result. A supported metro or MCC gate can combine writing with passage, so do not interpret the process as a separate free journey. If the outcome is unclear, ask staff rather than repeatedly tapping and guessing.

Suitable terminals and machines remain useful for checking or writing a pending load. Supported Android NFC functionality is another listed option, but having any NFC phone does not guarantee that a particular device and app setup can write this card.

Surface devices are not all described by one permanent button sequence. The metro announced automatic activation on tram validators without pressing the old button. Follow present on-device instructions instead of copying a screenshot from an older bus guide.

Three transfer rules that should not be mixed

The 90-minute combined Wallet tariff is one mechanism. It concerns the eligible rail and city-surface combination described in the fare rules; it does not buy unlimited independent metro re-entries for ninety minutes.

Free transfers between surface routes are another mechanism. The operator requires linking Troika to the personal account in the official app; its March 2026 notice says activation can take up to 24 hours. Do not assume a newly bought unregistered plastic automatically gives the same free second bus ride.

For that surface service, the first journey is paid and an eligible transfer within ninety minutes is not charged again under the stated conditions. Validate each boarding and check the actual result. A free transfer does not mean you should enter the vehicle without presenting the card.

Metro, MCC and MCD transfer arrangements are a third issue. The transport operator describes ninety- or 120-minute limits depending on the route. A permitted rail transfer is not a blanket promise that every later surface journey or regional train is included without charge.

If a trip combines MCD with a bus, check the relevant tariff rather than copying the rule for metro-to-MCD. The card name remains the same while the entitlement differs. This is why a journey search and a fare rule should be read together.

MCD: central and suburban zones matter

MCD, the Moscow Central Diameters, is not simply another name for the metro. It has central and suburban tariff zones and connections to a wider commuter-rail network. A central city ticket does not automatically cover travel beyond its permitted MCD area.

The published wallet examples distinguish the central and suburban amounts in the table. The one-day and three-day products discussed here cover the central MCD zone, not an unlimited suburban excursion. Confirm the actual origin and destination stations before buying a short city pass.

At MCD, validate on entry and on exit using the same travel medium. This closes the journey and is important for transfers. Do not walk past the exit validator simply because the physical barrier is open or other passengers appear to do so.

An entry that is never closed can result in a restriction on using Troika on MCD and commuter trains. Seek help through the suburban railway service if that happens. Do not assume that every card failure means an empty wallet, or invent a universal fee to solve it.

A transport card is not a universal regional entitlement

Check the actual operator for a suburban bus, a regional train or a specialised airport train. The fact that a service accepts a Troika carrier or has a station in Moscow does not prove that your particular day ticket pays for it.

Similarly, regular city river transport and sightseeing cruises are different products. The existence of a transport-card payment option does not make every tourist boat included in a short unlimited pass. Confirm both service category and ticket coverage.

Our explanation of tickets, zones and validation gives the general method. Apply it locally by identifying the carrier, recorded ticket, zone and boarding procedure. The logo printed on the plastic answers only part of that question.

Virtual Troika: check the current product, not old NFC advice

The current official virtual-card instructions describe QR-based use through the Moscow Metro app. At a compatible gate you display the active QR to the reader. For the described surface-validator method, the phone camera scans the validator's QR and the passenger confirms payment in the app.

Those are different actions, not a reason to display a screenshot of a plastic card. Follow the current instructions for the equipment you are using. Carry sufficient battery and working app access; do not build a first journey around an untested setup after arriving at the platform.

The published virtual Wallet setup requires automatic top-up. The listed virtual pass menu includes longer-period products; the short one-day and three-day plastic-card choice should not be assumed to exist there. The product menu matters as much as the ability to install the app.

For an international visitor, verify registration and a supported payment source before relying on the virtual version. This guide does not promise that every foreign-issued card, phone or account can complete the setup. An ordinary physical card with a workable purchase method can be simpler for a short stay.

When something fails

Read the displayed result before paying again. A low balance, pending recording, repeat-entry interval, wrong zone and unfinished MCD journey are different problems. Tapping repeatedly cannot identify which one applies.

Keep the card number and payment reference privately for support, along with the time and place. Use the official transport service or seller that handled the load. Do not share banking passwords or confirmation codes with someone offering informal help at a station.

Let RoadMe develop the complete personal city plan around your interests and a comfortable pace in available destinations. Following it in the app is more convenient than adding unnecessary trips merely because a pass allows them.

Before the first journey, confirm the recorded product, usable balance, zones and payment method for each traveller. Check the successful validation result and remember MCD exit validation. Troika works best when you know what is loaded, rather than expecting the card name alone to cover every journey.
