Madrid public transport: Tourist Travel Pass, Multi card and single tickets

Traveller with a suitcase considering transport at a generic underground entrance

For a short Madrid visit, compare a Tourist Travel Pass with ordinary tickets loaded on a Multi card. Multi is the reusable carrier, not an unlimited travel pass. The Tourist Travel Pass is a personal travel product for consecutive calendar days, and a ten-journey Metrobús is another product with different coverage. Choose from the journeys you will actually make, especially airport travel and trips beyond the city.

Fares and conditions checked on 27 October 2026. The discounted ten-journey price currently applies during 2026; do not assume the same subsidy continues next year. The comparison below concerns ordinary visitor fares rather than personalised resident, youth or concessionary passes.

Choose the travel pattern before the card

Try RoadMe to develop a complete personal trip plan around your interests, dates and pace in supported destinations. Keeping that plan in the app makes it easier to see which journeys are useful before paying for unlimited transport.

If you expect to explore one area on foot and use transport occasionally, begin with ordinary tickets. If you will repeatedly move between accommodation and different parts of the city, compare the Tourist Travel Pass. Unlimited travel also removes repeated ticket decisions, but that convenience has a price and does not automatically produce savings.

Put airport journeys in their own column. A city ticket, an airport metro supplement and a ride on the yellow Airport Express bus are different purchases. Including one does not include the others. A pass that works well in central Madrid can still leave a separately priced airport bus outside its coverage.

Then check where the hotel is. A booking described as Madrid may be outside the fare area you intended to buy. Our guide to transport tickets, zones and validation abroad explains the general approach: identify the operator and coverage before comparing the cheapest headline price.

Multi is the carrier; the loaded ticket pays for travel

The physical Tarjeta Multi is an anonymous reusable transport card. Bought on its own, the carrier costs EUR 2.50. That payment does not load a free ride, create a cash balance for arbitrary services or buy unlimited travel. Check both the carrier and the ticket shown in the purchase summary.

When buying a Tourist Travel Pass, its Multi carrier is included. Do not automatically add a second carrier charge to that option while comparing it with a new Multi and ordinary tickets. If you already have a usable Multi, that existing carrier cost is not a new expense for this visit.

The fact that the plastic is anonymous does not make every loaded product shareable. CRTM explicitly describes the Tourist Travel Pass as personal. Two people cannot treat one unlimited pass as two valid journeys merely because neither name is printed on the card.

Once the tourist product has expired, the Multi can be reused for another tourist product, metro singles or ten-journey tickets as permitted. Keep it after the trip. Reusability is useful, but remaining validity and ticket compatibility still need checking before a later visit.

The prices that matter for a short stay

ProductCurrent ordinary priceMain condition
Multi carrier aloneEUR 2.50No travel included
Ten-journey MetrobúsEUR 7.30Metro zone A, EMT and ML1 within product rules
Tourist, one day, A / TEUR 10.30 / 15.40Consecutive calendar-day product
Tourist, three days, A / TEUR 23.10 / 35.00Selected area and personal use
Tourist, seven days, A / TEUR 43.20 / 62.80Not seven freely selected travel days

Tourist versions also exist for two, four and five days. Compare the exact duration offered at purchase rather than assuming only the examples in the table exist. Prices are in local euros; your bank's conversion and charges can change the amount debited from an account in another currency.

The Metrobús price reflects the extraordinary 2026 subsidy, currently announced through 31 December. Some older articles show earlier prices or the undiscounted base tariff. Do not apply that reduced fare to every ten-trip ticket sold in the region: products covering other networks or zones differ.

Our trip budget guide compares complete costs rather than isolated fares. For transport, include a required carrier, relevant supplements and tickets outside the pass. Do not count a taxi you would never take as a saving produced by buying an unlimited ticket.

Calendar days change the value of a late arrival

The Tourist Travel Pass begins with first use, not simply on its purchase date. Its duration is counted in consecutive calendar days. A three-day product is therefore different from a rolling 72-hour pass. First using it late in the evening consumes the first calendar day even if most of that day has already passed.

CRTM extends validity on existing night services until 05:00. This is a rule about the end of the valid travel period, not a promise of overnight metro service. A ticket cannot create a train that does not run; check the actual service for the time you need.

For an evening arrival followed by several busy days, compare a separate arrival journey with starting the tourist product immediately. The arrival fare and any relevant airport supplement belong in that comparison. The better option depends on actual transport use rather than the number of nights booked.

The days are consecutive. A day spent outside the covered network does not pause the clock, and a quiet walking day still uses part of the validity. Buy the duration covering the useful period instead of assuming you can save unused days for later.

Zone A or zone T: follow the actual service

Zone A is the central-city starting point. Its tourist product covers eligible Metro services in that area, ordinary EMT buses, Cercanías journeys within the included central zones and Metro Ligero ML1. It also removes the metro airport supplement. The airport exception does not turn zone A into a pass for every surrounding municipality.

Zone T extends tourist coverage across the regional transport area, including eligible interurban services and the full Cercanías network. It can be relevant when a real out-of-city journey is planned. It is not automatically necessary just because the accommodation search included the words greater Madrid.

Choose using the accommodation address and specific destination, then inspect the service you intend to board. A town name alone is insufficient. Different operators may sell a bus, commuter train and reserved long-distance train to places in the same general direction.

In particular, wider tourist coverage does not include AVE, Avant or Renfe regional trains. The covered regular bus to Toledo is not the same product as an Avant train to Toledo. Buying zone T without distinguishing them can leave the intended train completely unpaid.

The airport supplement is not the Airport Express bus

For ordinary metro tickets, the airport stations have a separate EUR 3 supplement under the published conditions. The Tourist Travel Pass includes the relevant metro airport supplement. Compare the complete airport journey rather than treating the supplement alone as the fare from terminal to hotel.

The yellow Exprés Aeropuerto bus is excluded from the tourist product. Do not board it assuming that unlimited EMT travel includes every vehicle with EMT branding. The express has its own tariff; check and buy that product if it is your chosen connection.

Terminal location also affects convenience. A train, metro service and express bus do not necessarily use identical terminal stops. Look at the terminal on the flight and the actual departure point before choosing a ticket, especially if baggage or a late landing makes extra transfers inconvenient.

An included airport journey can make a pass more attractive, but it is only one part of the calculation. If the rest of the visit is mostly walking, ordinary city tickets plus the correct airport purchase can still deserve comparison. Inclusion alone is not proof of a cheaper total.

Ten journeys: count charged entries, not holiday days

Metrobús is a bundle of journeys valid on its specified services, not an unlimited day ticket. It does not become a regional train pass because the card also supports other products. Read the actual ticket name at the machine instead of choosing whichever option contains the word Metro.

Do not assume a metro-to-bus change is a free integrated transfer on this ordinary bundle. Separate access to another mode can use another journey. Staying within the paid metro system while changing lines is a different situation from leaving it and boarding an EMT bus.

When using a permitted non-personal ticket for a group, validate for every passenger and keep the group with the carrier for inspection. The personal Tourist Travel Pass cannot be shared this way. If you may separate during the day, individual carriers or products can be more practical than a shared bundle.

Estimate conservatively: how many chargeable journeys does each person need, and will unused journeys remain? The low average price of a ten-trip bundle assumes those trips are useful. Buying more travel than needed is not an automatic saving over a small number of singles.

Three examples for making the choice

A largely walking visit. You stay near the places you want to explore and use transport for a few separated journeys. Start with ordinary tickets. Compare how many rides will actually be consumed, include a carrier if needed and keep the airport calculation separate.

Several busy city days. Your hotel is farther from the areas you want to visit and you expect repeated morning, afternoon and evening travel. Compare the appropriate Tourist A duration with the same planned rides using ordinary products. Personal convenience may justify a pass even where the cash difference is modest.

A regional outing. You already know the destination and transport service. Compare Tourist T with a narrower city product plus the actual return fare. Do not upgrade just for a vague possibility of leaving Madrid, and do not assume a high-speed train is included in T.

These are decision examples, not tested itineraries or guaranteed break-even rules. Walking distances, weather, energy and hotel location can change the number of useful journeys. The aim is a realistic plan with room to adapt, not using transport solely to justify a purchase.

Buy, load and check before joining the gate queue

Metro vending machines are a straightforward official sales channel for visitor tickets. CRTM also lists authorised shops and other channels depending on the product. Use the selected ticket's actual sales options: a shop able to reload one product is not necessarily the right place for every pass or correction.

At purchase, distinguish buying a carrier from loading an existing one. Check the area, duration, product name and total before paying. Keep the receipt and inspect the loaded content. A bank payment confirmation demonstrates a payment, not necessarily that the intended ticket was loaded correctly.

At gates or onboard readers, present the transport medium carrying the ticket and wait for acceptance. Remove it from other contactless cards to avoid an unclear read. A photo of a Multi card is not its contactless chip and does not provide the same right to pass through a reader.

If the reader refuses it, step aside and check rather than following another passenger through. Staff can help distinguish an empty carrier, expired product, wrong zone and loading problem. Preserve the evidence needed to explain the issue instead of repeatedly purchasing unfamiliar products.

Phone tickets and bank cards are different things

CRTM describes a virtual transport card on supported Android devices, with eligible ten-journey and tourist products. That is a separate transport setup, not an assurance that every phone, operating system or bank wallet works as a Madrid ticket. Check the official compatibility information before paying for a mobile product.

Using a bank card to pay at a machine does not make that bank card the ticket stored on the Multi. Likewise, a bus payment service does not prove you can tap the same bank card directly at every metro gate. Follow the instructions for the particular transport product and reader.

Choose a medium you can reliably use for the full journey. A virtual ticket depends on access to the required device; a physical card must remain with its user. Before choosing phone-only travel, confirm installation and operation rather than relying on a screenshot or an app icon.

Children, long stays and the final check

Do not apply ordinary adult examples automatically to children. CRTM lists a reduced tourist fare for children below its specified age threshold, while other age-based products have their own eligibility and card requirements. Check the child's actual category and required proof rather than assuming every young visitor gets a resident's free product immediately.

A longer stay can justify examining personalised products, but an Abono 30 días is outside this short-visit comparison. A low monthly price in a search result may involve another carrier, profile or eligibility. It is not evidence that a Multi loaded at the nearest machine provides the same entitlement.

Let RoadMe work out your personal sightseeing plan around what interests you and the pace you enjoy in supported cities. Following it in the app makes it easier to group nearby visits and choose transport for the trip you want, rather than arranging the trip around a pass.

Before paying, confirm four things: the actual services and area, the first and last useful travel day, one valid personal product per user where required, and any airport purchase outside coverage. Keep the carrier and receipt accessible. That is enough to make the choice clearly without turning every journey into another ticket puzzle.
