Lyon public transport: TCL tickets and passes for a short stay
For a short stay in Lyon, choose a TCL ticket from your actual zones and travel pattern. The main city comparison is usually between individual journeys, a 24-, 48- or 72-hour pass and contactless bank-card payment where that service is available. A Lyon City Card is a different cultural bundle, and Rhônexpress airport travel has its own fare. The same city name does not make all these products interchangeable.
Checked on 27 October 2026. Prices below use current product pages, including the updated 2026 pass amounts. Older guides and some older landing pages still show lower prices. Check the selected zones and final product before purchase rather than treating any cached TCL price as current.
Begin with zones and useful journeys
Try RoadMe before buying a pass: in supported destinations, the app develops a complete personal trip plan around interests, dates and pace. Keeping that plan in the app makes it easier to estimate the journeys you actually need instead of filling the day just to use a ticket.
The unified TCL network uses zones 1 to 5 plus an external zone. The chosen ticket must cover every zone crossed, not only where you start and finish. Ordinary single-zone purchase is not the basic option: the tariff structure uses combinations such as zones 1 and 2 or other permitted adjacent zones.
For accommodation and visits within central Lyon, start by checking zones 1 and 2. Do not automatically extend that assumption to a more distant hotel, an excursion or every service with Lyon in its destination. Read the actual origin, destination and zones of the whole journey.
Our guide to tickets, zones and validation explains the general method. Here the important local distinction is between a TCL transport ticket, bank-card open payment and a separate tourism product. The choice determines both coverage and which reader to use.
Current price examples for zones 1 and 2
| Product | Published price | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| 1 voyage | EUR 2.10 | One-hour validity in the selected two zones |
| Pass 24h | EUR 7.10 | Unlimited eligible journeys for 24 hours from first validation |
| Pass 48h | EUR 13.20 | 48 hours from first validation in selected zones |
| Pass 72h | EUR 18.50 | 72 hours from first validation in selected zones |
| Rechargeable ticket carrier on first purchase | EUR 0.20 | Carrier cost additional to the loaded travel product |
These are ordinary examples, not every concession or group offer. A headline starting price may apply to another zone combination. The 24-hour pass for zones 1 and 2 is not priced from the lowest all-network search snippet.
Separate the carrier from the fare. Buying a rechargeable ticket initially adds its carrier cost; retaining a usable carrier can avoid buying a new one each time. TCL describes recharging it up to ten times, which is not the same as ten free journeys.
For another currency account, your payment provider's rate and charges apply. This guide quotes the local euro prices rather than claiming a guaranteed bank conversion. Confirm a workable payment method before depending on an unfamiliar contactless setup.
Single journey does not mean one vehicle only
The current 1 voyage product is valid for one hour when covering two zones, or two hours for three zones and more. Transfers and returns are allowed under its conditions. A metro-to-tram change during validity does not necessarily require buying another single fare.
Validate at each boarding and connection even when the transfer is included. Revalidation is how the system records a valid connection; it is not a reason to skip the reader because you already paid once. Wait for the result before continuing.
The product page allows finishing the journey beyond the validity period when the final validation occurred within that period. Do not reinterpret this as permission to start a fresh transfer after the deadline. Check the remaining time before leaving for another boarding.
When comparing a pass with singles, count independently charged journeys rather than every vehicle change. A day with several included connections can cost differently from the same number of separate trips spread across the day.

24, 48 or 72 hours: a rolling period
These passes begin with first validation in their selected zones. They are not simply calendar-day tickets ending at midnight. A late-afternoon start can therefore have a different useful window from a pass whose validity began that morning.
Choose the period that covers actual travel, not only hotel nights. For two days mostly on foot, individual fares may be worth comparing. For repeated travel, a time pass can reduce the need to decide about each independently paid journey.
Do not assume the validity window can be paused when you stop for a long visit or leave the city. The elapsed period continues. A 48-hour product does not mean two freely chosen days spread through the week.
Our travel-budget guide helps compare the full cost. Include selected zones and carrier where needed, and compare the same journeys for each option. A pass is not automatically a saving because it permits more rides than you intend to take.
Grey and red readers serve different products
TCL's validation guidance distinguishes grey transport readers from red bank-card readers. In buses and trams, the grey reader accepts the rechargeable transport ticket, TCL or Oùra card and supported TCL E-ticket use. The red reader is for eligible bank cards and connected payment devices.
In the illustrated metro arrangement, the red bank reader is above the grey transport reader. Follow the current equipment signs rather than tapping whichever surface is nearest. Presenting the wrong medium to a reader does not establish successful validation.
A phone is not one universal product. A phone containing a TCL E-ticket belongs at the transport reader; a phone being used as a supported bank-payment device uses the bank reader. TCL explicitly warns against presenting the E-ticket app to the red reader.
Keep the intended medium separate from other cards while validating. A wallet containing several contactless products can make the result harder to understand. Use one chosen support and check its confirmation rather than waving the whole wallet at both readers.
Bank-card payment: the card becomes the travel proof
The TCL Carte bancaire service is offered in zones 1 and 2 on equipped services, not as universal open payment across zones 3, 4, 5 and the external zone. Check coverage before using it for a journey beyond the city area.
The published conditions list supported contactless payment applications including CB, Visa and Mastercard, with further specified compatible types. They also list incompatible examples, including American Express, JCB and UnionPay. A card being contactless does not by itself make it eligible.
Use the same physical card, phone or watch for the first validation, connections and inspection. A physical card and its version inside a phone are not safely interchangeable travel proof merely because they draw from the same bank account.
During inspection, present the medium used to validate. A statement showing a bank charge is not a substitute for that medium. Keep the phone charged if it is your travel proof and do not switch devices mid-journey expecting automatic recognition.
If a reader refuses the payment, obtain a valid ticket another way before travelling. The conditions describe refusals related to eligibility or previous unsettled payment. Repeated tapping is not a reliable fix or proof that a new journey has been accepted.

Daily capping is not a rolling 24-hour pass
The bank-card service calculates the applicable fare at the end of the operating day and caps each traveller at the current 24-hour tariff under its conditions. That is a charging rule for the operating day, not a newly issued rolling 24-hour pass after your first tap.
The difference matters for an evening and the following morning. A purchased rolling pass and two bank-payment operating days are not necessarily the same comparison. Do not assume the bank system automatically builds the cheapest 48- or 72-hour product across the whole holiday.
Transfers within the permitted time should be recorded with the same support. Changing to another card or device can separate the history used for connections and capping. Consistency is more important than choosing a different card because it is easier to reach.
Charging is later: the published conditions describe collection after the travel day rather than an immediate final charge for every tap. Check the service account or actual settlement if the amount is initially unclear. Do not diagnose a temporary bank display as the definitive price of all journeys.
Groups: bank payment and the app are different
The bank-card terms allow a group of up to five people on one support, following the repeated-validation procedure. Additional travellers are added within the stated ten-second interval after the initial validation. Check the reader's actual passenger count instead of assuming one tap covers everyone.
At connections, repeat the group procedure with the same support: one tap for each traveller. A successful first vehicle does not remove this requirement later. The cap is per passenger, not a single daily amount shared by the whole group.
This does not mean every other TCL medium has the same group procedure. A rechargeable multi-journey ticket or a dedicated group offer follows its own rules. TCL E-ticket on one phone is not described as supporting several people travelling simultaneously.
If keeping the group together and repeating taps is inconvenient, compare individual supports or the actual group product before departure. Do not buy a family-labelled offer solely from the name; age, party composition and zone conditions can apply.
TCL E-ticket: Android compatibility, not a universal phone ticket
The current E-ticket FAQ describes supported Android phones with NFC. It does not present the same app as an available iPhone ticketing solution. Check actual device compatibility before paying for a product intended to live on that phone.
The phone must be on, with NFC active and enough battery. The FAQ also requires periodic internet refresh; after more than 24 hours without connection the phone can be refused until rights are refreshed. Being able to validate briefly offline is not permanent offline independence.
An existing physical TCL card's tickets do not automatically migrate to the virtual card. Buying through the app creates the relevant phone-based product; it is not a photograph of your existing carrier or a universal storage wallet for every seller's voucher.
The app's account setup requires the stated contact details. Foreign phone numbers are accepted according to the FAQ, but the number must be able to receive the confirmation SMS. Check payment and registration before your first station queue, not after committing to a phone-only journey.
TCL pass, Lyon City Card and airport travel
A Lyon City Card combines cultural benefits with specified transport coverage. TCL describes versions of that tourism product including 96 hours, while ordinary short transport passes here are 24, 48 and 72 hours. A 96-hour tourism card is not proof of an identical ordinary TCL fare product.
Compare the bundle only if its actual cultural inclusions matter to you. This article does not replace a separate review of museums or attractions. Paying for unused cultural benefits is not automatically economical merely because the card also includes city transport.
The stated City Card transport scope is zones 1 and 2. Rhônexpress has a specific separate tariff, and airport-related packages require checking the exact purchased version. Do not infer Rhônexpress inclusion from the words Lyon, TCL or airport access on a general city page.
Ordinary products also exclude services requiring specific tickets, including Navigône and stadium shuttles under their listed conditions. A funicular journey within the eligible TCL product is different from assuming every boat or event shuttle is included.

A simple choice before the first journey
Check all crossed zones, compare independent fares with a rolling pass and choose the medium you can use reliably. If using a bank card, remember its zone scope, reader and operating-day cap. If using E-ticket, confirm phone compatibility and access.
Retain your carrier and receipt for checking the balance or purchase when needed. Ask the actual seller or TCL about a failed load rather than buying repeatedly without understanding the first result. Keep bank details private and use the official support route.
Let RoadMe develop the complete personal city plan around your interests and a comfortable pace in available destinations. Following it in the app is more convenient than adding unnecessary journeys just to make a pass feel worthwhile.
The useful ticket is the one matching your zones, time window and actual transport. Confirm successful validation at every boarding and connection, keep the same proof and treat cultural or airport products separately. That approach is simpler than expecting one contactless logo to answer every fare question.
