Istanbul Airport Transfers: IST and SAW to the City
From Istanbul Airport (IST), compare the M11 metro with Havaist coaches; from Sabiha Gökçen (SAW), compare the M4 with HAVABUS. The useful question is which option reaches your actual neighbourhood, at your arrival time, with a manageable final walk. Taksim, Sultanahmet and Kadıköy are different destinations, and neither airport has a single train called “city centre”.
This guide separates the two airports, explains the main connections and shows what to check before paying. Transport information was checked on 25 October 2026. Published coach prices are dated examples, while railway schedules and the last connection need checking for your travel date.
Start with the airport code and your hotel address
Make the first day easier with RoadMe: let the app build a personal trip plan around your interests, dates and pace, then leave realistic time for arrival and rest. It is a more convenient way to turn a collection of places into a coherent visit.
IST is İstanbul Havalimanı on the European side. SAW is Sabiha Gökçen on the Asian side. The airport named on your outbound booking may differ from the airport on your return flight. Check each flight separately, rather than relying on the airline name or a saved search for “Istanbul airport”.
Save the hotel's full Turkish address, its map location and a contact number. A district name alone is too broad: an address described as Fatih might be near a useful rail connection or require a further ride. Likewise, “near Taksim” does not tell you whether you will be pulling a suitcase down a steep street.

Choose a practical option before comparing prices
| Arrival and destination | Useful starting option | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| IST to Taksim or Beyoğlu | M11 towards Gayrettepe, then M2; compare a Havaist coach | Rail involves walking and another service; coaches face traffic |
| IST to the old city | Compare the current Sultanahmet Havaist stop with a rail connection through Gayrettepe or Halkalı | The best arrival stop depends on the hotel address |
| SAW to Kadıköy | M4 towards Kadıköy or HAVABUS | The station or coach stop may still be far from your door |
| SAW to the European side | M4 and Marmaray, or a HAVABUS coach towards Taksim | Check every connection and any onward journey |
| Either airport with difficult luggage or a late arrival | Compare an official taxi with a confirmed private transfer | Check the full charging basis, meeting point and waiting terms |
Rail is useful when avoiding road congestion matters and you can manage the connections. A coach can reduce the number of times you lift a bag, especially when its city stop suits your accommodation. A car can make sense for a group or someone who needs direct access, but traffic still affects it.
IST by M11: choose Gayrettepe or Halkalı deliberately
The M11 serves Istanbul Airport. Follow the terminal's current railway signs and allow time to reach the station before thinking about the train ride itself. A flight landing time is not the time you will be standing at a ticket machine: immigration, baggage collection and the walk come first.
For Taksim, take M11 towards Gayrettepe, then M2 towards Yenikapı, leaving at Taksim. Choose another M2 stop if it suits your address better.
Gayrettepe is an interchange, not a promise of an effortless same-platform change. Leave room for corridors, lifts or escalators, and time to identify the second line's direction. Keep the Turkish station names in your saved notes; matching lettering on signs is easier than translating names while carrying bags.
Older guides may describe the airport line only in relation to Gayrettepe and Arnavutköy. The Halkalı–Arnavutköy section opened in June 2026, completing the rail connection between Gayrettepe, Istanbul Airport and Halkalı. Halkalı offers a connection with Marmaray, creating another option for some addresses.
The new section’s introductory free-travel offer ended in July 2026. Compare both M11 directions for your hotel; Halkalı is not automatically best for every old-city address.
IST by Havaist: check the exact city stop
Havaist airport coaches use the arrivals transport level −2 at IST. Follow current terminal signs and confirm your destination with the staff before loading luggage. Stops, route labels and departure patterns can change; a screenshot from an old article should not override the departure information at the airport.
For Taksim, check the current Havaist service and the city stop's position relative to your hotel. For the old city, compare the Sultanahmet service rather than assuming you must always use Aksaray. There is a Sultanahmet line, but its name needs a little explanation.
The operator's July 2026 update places the Sultanahmet end at Çatladıkapı. This is not the Sultanahmet tram stop and does not mean the coach drops you at the Blue Mosque entrance. Ask your hotel whether the walk from Çatladıkapı is suitable with your luggage; the historic neighbourhood's narrow streets make the final approach important.
Use the route selector for the fare and departures relevant to your journey. Different dated pages show different Havaist amounts, including a euro price for the Sultanahmet line; they are not a reliable basis for a single current lira fare covering every destination. Confirm the amount and payment method before buying.

SAW by M4: Kadıköy and the Marmaray connection
Sabiha Gökçen has a metro connection on the M4. Follow the airport's current Metro signs to Sabiha Gökçen Havalimanı station and check the direction towards Kadıköy. This is a railway service on the Asian side, not a direct train to Sultanahmet or Taksim.
Metro İstanbul lists an end-to-end M4 running time of about 52 minutes between the airport and Kadıköy. Treat that as the train segment. Add time for reaching the platform, waiting, leaving the station and getting to your accommodation; the hotel is not necessarily at the Kadıköy terminus.
For many European-side destinations, Ayrılık Çeşmesi is a useful interchange with Marmaray, which crosses beneath the Bosphorus. Sirkeci can be useful for parts of the old city, while other addresses need a different onward connection. Check the correct direction and destination on the Marmaray platform.
You can also consider a ferry after reaching Kadıköy if its route, operating hours and weather conditions fit the trip. The crossing can be a pleasant introduction to the city, but a ferry is a separate service. Do not build a late-night arrival around a daytime sailing you have not checked.
SAW by HAVABUS: Taksim and Kadıköy
HAVABUS is the operator to compare for the main airport coaches from SAW towards Taksim and Kadıköy. Havaist and HAVABUS are similar-looking names with different services. Confirm the airport, destination and operator on the actual departure information rather than treating the names as interchangeable.
On 25 October 2026, HAVABUS published a one-way fare of 485 TRY for Taksim and 300 TRY for Kadıköy. These are fares for the stated coach routes, not a universal airport transport ticket and not a quotation for a taxi. Recheck before travel because fares can be revised.
The operator gives approximately 90 minutes for the Taksim journey and approximately 60 minutes for Kadıköy, subject to traffic. Neither is a reliable door-to-door deadline. Crossing to the European side can add uncertainty, and the final walk or connecting ride is still outside that estimate.
The published airport-to-Taksim table currently runs from 06:30 to 01:30. The airport-to-Kadıköy table starts at 05:45 and also reaches 01:30, with departures that are not uniformly spaced throughout the day. Use the table for your direction; the city's first and last departures are different.
The website also mentions services for delayed aircraft between 01:00 and 04:00. That note is not a guaranteed regular all-night timetable for anyone arriving at the airport. If your plan depends on such a departure, confirm it with the operator and keep another way to reach the hotel.
Night arrivals: verify the complete chain
Metro İstanbul's regular night operation covers selected lines, including M4 and M2, on the nights from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday. It does not mean the whole network runs all night every day. A Sunday-night arrival is not covered merely because the trip is described as a weekend break.
The airport M11 and Marmaray are not included in that particular list of night metro lines. Check their own timetables separately. An M4 train still running after midnight does not establish that the Marmaray connection you wanted will also be available, or that a tram or ferry will meet it.
Work backwards from the last service that you actually need. If your flight lands close to midnight, border formalities and baggage collection may put you at the station too late even when the published closing time seems promising. Plan from a realistic terminal exit, then check all onward departures.
Save a backup before flying: the next suitable coach, an official taxi or a private transfer with clear delayed-flight conditions. For accommodation dates and reception arrangements, use our guide to organising a late-night arrival and check-in. Arriving after midnight does not automatically make a room available immediately.
Payment, luggage and getting the total cost right
Istanbulkart is useful for city transport, but do not assume that every service charges the same fare or that a coach ticket includes a railway connection. The M11, M4, Marmaray and airport coaches need their own applicable fare conditions. Load enough for the complete journey and keep another workable payment method.
Read the screen before confirming a purchase. Buying a physical card, adding balance and paying for a ride are different actions. A bank-card symbol does not guarantee that a particular foreign-issued card will be accepted. For cards issued in Russia, do not rely on an international logo alone; arrange an independently confirmed payment option.
For the general distinction between buying, activating and using tickets, see public transport abroad: tickets and validation. Here the practical task is simpler: identify which service you are boarding, the destination and what that particular payment covers.
With children, a wheelchair, a large pushchair or heavy luggage, ask about the actual service and vehicle before committing. Check lift availability where necessary, luggage allowance and any child-seat requirement for a booked car. A line being accessible in principle is not a guarantee that every lift is working that day.

Taxi or private transfer: agree what you are paying for
Use the airport's designated taxi arrangements and show the full hotel address before departure. Confirm how the fare will be calculated, the payment method and any bridge, tunnel or motorway tolls. For a metered taxi, check that the meter is being used; do not mistake a driver's rough estimate for a guaranteed total.
A private transfer booked at an agreed price is a different product. Check the included vehicle size, luggage capacity, meeting instructions, flight-delay monitoring, waiting period and cancellation terms. Keep the operator's contact details and booking confirmation accessible without relying on the person holding a sign being your driver.
Returning to the airport or changing airports
Check the return airport code before choosing a coach or train. Save the departure stop for the correct direction and allow for the transport journey, walking inside the terminal and your airline's check-in and bag-drop deadlines. An estimated journey planner time is only one part of that calculation.
IST and SAW are separate airports across the metropolitan area. A transfer between them is a substantial land journey, not a terminal shuttle. Havaist lists an inter-airport service, but check its current departures and total conditions before relying on it. Road traffic can consume the margin between two flights.
With separately booked flights, add the risk of collecting bags, entering the country where required and checking in again. There is no universal safe connection time that can be promised from a bus running-time estimate. Check entry requirements for your own documents and the airlines' responsibilities for your actual booking.
Once the airport transfer is settled, use RoadMe to build a personalised visit around the time you really have, your interests and your preferred pace. Planning the trip in the app is more convenient than trying to fit unrelated recommendations into a tired arrival day.
