France’s Intercités de nuit: night train tickets and couchette choices

9 min read

Preparing for an overnight train with a sleep mask in a generic waiting room

To book France's Intercités de nuit, find a departure explicitly labelled as a night train, then choose a seat, a second-class couchette or a first-class couchette. Second-class compartments have six berths and first-class compartments four. An ordinary first-class berth is still a place in a shared compartment; reserve the separate Espace Privatif option if you want the whole compartment.

Information checked on 26 October 2026. This guide covers the French domestic Intercités de nuit product, not every European sleeper or international Nightjet. The actual date, available accommodation and selected fare determine your booking. A route shown on a network map does not guarantee a departure every night.

Choose what you need to sleep, not only the class name

ProductWhat you are choosingMain decision
Second-class seatA seated place, not a bedWhether the overnight comfort suits you
Second-class couchetteA berth in a six-berth compartmentShared space and lower, middle or upper position
First-class couchetteA berth in a four-berth compartmentFewer people, but not automatic privacy
Espace PrivatifA whole compartment explicitly booked for your partyAvailability, total price and correct passengers
Women's compartment optionA specified shared compartment, subject to availabilitySelecting the option during booking

Start with the night's purpose. If you need to lie down, a cheap seat is not an equivalent substitute. If you need exclusive space, one first-class berth is not equivalent to a private compartment. Decide those requirements before comparing the prices displayed in the search.

For the days around the rail journey, try RoadMe: in supported cities, the app develops a complete personal trip plan around your interests, dates and pace. Planning in the app is more convenient when the overnight journey and a gentle arrival morning already have realistic space.

A night train can replace a hotel night and save a daytime journey, but it does not guarantee a full night's sleep. Noise, movement, other passengers and an early stop affect people differently. Build the choice around your own comfort and the demands of the following day.

Check the route and the date before choosing a berth

The operator's domestic night network links Paris with destinations including Toulouse, Rodez, Aurillac, Latour-de-Carol, Cerbère, Tarbes, Briançon and Nice. Paris departures use Paris-Austerlitz in the published network. Check the actual station on your ticket rather than treating all Paris railway stations as interchangeable.

Not every listed destination has an identical year-round daily pattern. Some services or extensions depend on the day and season, and engineering works can alter the plan. Search your actual departure and arrival stations on your date, including the direction of travel.

A connection arriving the following morning has two calendar dates. Keep departure date and arrival date separate when arranging accommodation, an onward ticket or a meeting. The date you sleep on the train is not necessarily the date entered as the hotel arrival.

If the result is missing, do not immediately conclude that every berth has sold out. Sales may not yet be open, a timetable may be affected by works, or the service may not run on that date. Check operator notices and nearby dates before changing an entire holiday.

Search through SNCF Connect or another authorised sales channel and look for the Intercités de nuit service identification. A daytime Intercités result is not a sleeper because the brand name is similar. A late departure by another product also does not automatically include a berth.

Enter the real passengers and any discount entitlement that you can prove. Then inspect the comfort choices for the selected departure. A general “second class” label can lead to a seated place unless you choose the couchette product actually offered.

Compare the total for your group, not merely the lowest number in a results list. Check the train, stations, date, passenger names, selected accommodation and fare conditions together. A search result is only a proposal until the correct ticket has been issued.

After payment, download the issued ticket or make it available through the chosen service. A bank debit notification is not the same as a usable passenger ticket. If the payment status is unclear, inspect the booking before buying again and potentially creating two orders.

Second-class couchette: six berths and three levels

The ordinary second-class layout has two lower, two middle and two upper berths. You can request a position during booking according to the options available. If a particular position is essential, check what the final booking actually confirms rather than relying on the first preference clicked.

A lower berth reduces climbing and can be easier when getting up at night. Middle and upper berths require using the provided access and arranging your belongings so you do not repeatedly disturb others. Consider your ability to climb, not only whether the upper level sounds quieter.

A berth is a place to lie down in a shared compartment, not a separate hotel room. Keep expectations realistic about space for sitting, changing and opening a large suitcase. Prepare a small overnight bag so the main luggage can remain stored instead of occupying the shared aisle.

First class: fewer berths does not mean a private room

First-class couchette compartments have four berths: two lower and two upper. That changes the number of people sharing the space. Buying one berth still leaves the other places available to other passengers unless you explicitly reserve exclusive use.

The useful comparison is therefore shared four-berth accommodation against shared six-berth accommodation, with the actual fare difference on your departure. Do not compare an imagined private room against a real second-class berth and assume that the class label supplies the missing privacy.

The operator provides bedding, water and a night kit with couchette accommodation. Do not infer that every extra mentioned on an old translated sales page, including breakfast, is automatically part of every current first-class ticket. Check what your actual product includes.

If your main requirement is climbing less, first class alone does not solve it: the compartment still has upper berths. If your requirement is less sharing, it may be relevant. Keep position, class and exclusive use as three separate decisions.

Espace Privatif and the women's option

Espace Privatif is the explicit option for reserving the whole compartment for your party. Check its availability and complete price for the actual departure and passenger list. Do not assume that purchasing several ordinary tickets or leaving places unoccupied automatically creates exclusive use.

The women's compartment option is available without an additional charge subject to space, and the operator allows women accompanied by children under 12 within its conditions. Select the relevant option during booking. It is not a separate compartment automatically assigned to every woman travelling alone.

Packing a compact bag with overnight essentials

Price: compare the actual departure and product

The price varies with date, availability, passenger entitlements and comfort choice. A promotional “from” amount is a limited offer, not a standard fare available on every departure. An expired sale should not become the price you use to budget a future trip.

For a fair comparison, put the night train beside the daytime transport plus accommodation you would otherwise use. Include station transfers, food, any needed luggage storage and what happens after an early arrival. A hotel night saved is useful only if the resulting morning is practical.

Our guide to travel budgeting and easily missed expenses helps compare complete costs. If you would need a room anyway to recover after the train, count that honestly rather than claiming that overnight rail always removes an accommodation expense.

For a group, compare the total shared-berth booking with the total Espace Privatif offer. Do not compare a per-person starting price against a whole-compartment amount without aligning the passenger count. The usable choice matters more than the headline difference.

Rail passes still need the correct reservation

Interrail and Eurail travel on these night trains requires the appropriate reservation in addition to a valid pass. Places available to pass holders are limited. Having activated a pass or added a journey to an itinerary does not allocate a seat or couchette.

Use the booking route available for your pass and the required comfort class, then inspect the issued reservation. Pass-holder supplements and booking charges are not the same as an ordinary point-to-point ticket price. Check current conditions instead of reusing an old flat reservation amount.

If you want a private compartment, verify whether the particular pass reservation channel and product support it. Do not assume that every option offered to ordinary ticket buyers is also available through a pass booking. Ask about the actual product before committing the rest of the journey.

Food, power and connectivity

The current operator information describes meal pre-ordering and paid snacks and drinks in the service carriage. That is different from promising a restaurant car or a full meal included with your berth. Check the offer and ordering deadline applicable to your departure.

Carry what you need for a comfortable evening within the baggage rules, especially if a late arrival at the departure station leaves little time to shop. Choose quiet, tidy food in a shared compartment and keep rubbish out of the sleeping space.

Wi-Fi and electrical sockets are listed by the operator, but a listed service does not guarantee continuous internet or an individual outlet in every position. Download tickets and essential arrival information beforehand. Do not plan a critical online appointment on the assumption of uninterrupted coverage.

Pack for a shared sleeping space

The current luggage rules require labelled bags that you can carry yourself in one go. Check the applicable size and quantity rules if bringing large or unusual items. A sleeping berth does not create an extra storage entitlement or permit blocking the corridor.

Put sleepwear, toiletries, water, charger, ticket and essential personal items in a small accessible bag. Arrange the main suitcase before others are asleep. Keep valuables with you without spreading possessions across another berth or using the aisle as a changing room.

An unfolded bicycle needs a limited bookable bicycle place arranged with the passenger ticket. It is not simply ordinary luggage placed beside the berth. Pets also have product-specific rules: shared couchette accommodation is not an automatic pet option; check the permitted seat or private-compartment arrangement before purchase.

For wheelchair use or other substantial access needs, contact the relevant assistance service before buying. The operator's night-train guidance does not present these couchette trains as wheelchair-accessible. A lower berth request is not proof of a usable boarding and onboard path.

A gentle breakfast after an overnight journey

At the station and after the night

Arrive with time to find the correct station, train and carriage. Current rules require you to be on the platform and able to board no later than two minutes before departure; this is not advice to arrive at the station two minutes beforehand. Use a sensible buffer for an unfamiliar terminal and luggage.

Check the carriage and berth on the issued ticket, and follow staff instructions. Do not assume that paper-ticket stamping advice for a different train product applies to Intercités. Have your ticket and any required entitlement documents ready for inspection.

Before arrival, put belongings together without waiting until the train stops. Confirm the station name, not just the approximate time. If your accommodation will not yet accept you, decide where luggage and breakfast fit rather than arriving with an unworkable plan.

First-class couchette passengers have a station shower service described for arrivals at Paris-Austerlitz and Toulouse-Matabiau, subject to its actual access arrangements. That is not an onboard shower or a service promised at every destination. Check the current opening and your eligibility if depending on it.

Changes, cancellations and the first city day

Read the selected fare's exchange and refund conditions before paying. Changes can involve a fare adjustment and fees, and conditions tighten near departure. Do not assume that a flexible-looking sales page means unlimited free cancellation or that closing the app cancels a ticket.

If plans change, act through the original sales channel and keep the confirmation. For disruption, inspect the operator's instructions for the booked service before buying replacements. A separately booked onward train should not be treated as automatically protected without the applicable ticket conditions.

Our guide to late arrivals, transfers and accommodation access helps arrange the evening before departure or a hotel arrival after another leg. For the morning after the night train, avoid filling every hour before you know how well you rest in shared accommodation.

Let RoadMe develop a complete personal city programme around your interests and available time where supported. Using that plan in the app is easier than rebuilding a packed sightseeing day after an early arrival or a restless night.

Book the actual night service, distinguish a seat from a couchette and a shared berth from exclusive use, then check the issued ticket. A realistic morning and the right accommodation choice make Intercités de nuit more useful than a low advertised fare considered alone.
