I amsterdam City Card: Museums, Transport and Reservations

The I amsterdam City Card currently has two different products: Total Experience combines included visits with GVB city transport, while Explorer provides a chosen number of activities without transport. Neither includes the Van Gogh Museum or Anne Frank House. Decide from the places you actually want to visit before comparing durations or an advertised saving.

This guide explains the current options, museum reservations, activation and the transport boundary. Prices and conditions were checked on 25 October 2026. It is a practical card comparison, not a sightseeing route or a promise that a particular number of visits will save everyone money.

Start with your essential visits

Let RoadMe build a personal trip plan around your interests, dates and pace before choosing a city card. Planning in the app is a more convenient way to balance museums, outdoor discoveries and rest than adding unwanted visits to justify a pass.

Separate places you want to enter from places you only want to see outside. Then check each admission against the current City Card list. A famous museum being in Amsterdam does not mean it participates, and an included museum does not necessarily include every temporary exhibition or extra experience.

Keep essential visits separate from optional ones. If the card only wins after adding several places you would otherwise skip, individual tickets may better suit the trip. A flexible afternoon is also part of a holiday, even though it has no admission price to put into a calculator.

Calculate each traveller separately. Children can have different museum prices, while the City Card now has its own child products. Do not assume that the adult saving multiplied by your group size describes a family budget, or that an old review saying there is no child card is still current.

Total Experience is the version to consider for a busy collection of included visits with GVB travel. Explorer can suit a smaller selection spread over several days. Neither becomes the right product simply because the name contains “City Card”.

I amsterdam Explorer is also a different product from a similarly named Go City Explorer pass. Lists of attractions, validity and conditions cannot be transferred between them. Before paying, check the issuer and the exact product on your order confirmation.

These are published official offers checked on the date above, not a guarantee of the checkout price on a future date. Promotions and seller conditions may change. Child cards must be bought together with an adult card; the operator does not sell them independently.

A child card being available does not establish that it is useful for your family. The Rijksmuseum, for example, currently lists free admission for ages 18 and under, although a start time still needs booking. Count only the child's admission and transport costs that the card would genuinely replace.

What is included, discounted or excluded?

The current participating selection includes the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Moco Museum, NEMO, Rembrandt House Museum, ARTIS and A'DAM LOOKOUT, among other places. Total Experience also lists one Amsterdam canal cruise and one 24-hour bicycle rental. Check the exact offer at the location you intend to use.

Free included admission and a discount are different benefits. A discount at the Heineken Experience or another partner does not make the whole ticket free. Compare the remaining payment and booking rules before counting it as part of your saving.

At A'DAM LOOKOUT, the included observation-deck visit does not include the swing ride, which has a separate charge. The same principle applies elsewhere: a general museum entry should not be assumed to include a workshop, special exhibition, film screening or guided activity.

The Van Gogh Museum and Anne Frank House are excluded from both Total Experience and Explorer. If they dominate your essential list, budget for their tickets separately. A guided walk about an artist or Anne Frank is not admission to the corresponding museum.

The Rijksmuseum offers a broad view of Dutch history and art, while the Rembrandt House focuses on the artist's life and working environment. Rembrandt lived and worked in that house between 1639 and 1658. These are different reasons to visit, rather than interchangeable entries to maximise a card count.

Reservations: the card does not book a museum

Some participating locations require a time slot. The issuer maintains a booking directory, but the practical instructions belong to the individual venue. Buying the card, adding it to your phone and reserving an admission are separate actions.

For the Rijksmuseum, City Card holders need an advance start-time booking. The issuer directs holders to the museum's booking system and the applicable free or reduced-admission category. Bring the valid card as well as the reservation; selecting a free category does not establish entitlement without the card.

The Rembrandt House also requires City Card holders to book a starting time using its card-reservation option. Check other museums individually, including any temporary programme you specifically want. A slot for a different ticket category should not be assumed to work with your pass.

Booking a time slot does not activate the City Card. That lets you prepare important reservations before starting the clock. However, the card must be valid at the actual visit, so place each essential booking within the period or activity allowance you intend to use.

Save the confirmations and check participant numbers. One purchase containing several cards does not automatically reserve several museum places. If the desired slot is unavailable, reassess the purchase rather than assuming the card opens a separate unlimited entrance.

Activation: digital and physical cards work differently

A digital card is added to the official I amsterdam City Card app and activated there when you are ready to begin. Avoid pressing the activation button simply to test the screen before your trip. Downloading the app or reserving a museum slot is not the same as starting the card.

A physical Total Experience card activates on its first use, which can be an included museum visit or GVB check-in. An apparently minor tram ride can therefore start the hours. Plan that first use around the time you actually need the full product.

Total Experience runs in consecutive hours. A 24-hour card activated at 17:00 lasts until 17:00 the next day, not until midnight. Explorer instead has five consecutive days from activation and also ends once its purchased activities have been used.

Do not rely on older descriptions of separate museum and transport clocks. Use the current instructions for your exact version. A physical card cannot simply be added to the app as though it were a digital card; the operator distinguishes these formats.

For group purchases, organise which person has which card before the first visit. The app allows transferring digital cards to another phone, with conditions including internet access and a one-time transfer limit. This is transferring an individual's card, not permission for several people to share one admission entitlement.

Transport: GVB is included, the whole region is not

During Total Experience validity, the included municipal network covers GVB buses, trams and metro, with the operator also listing its ferry services. Night buses are included, but that does not make trams and metro operate all night. Check the service you actually need rather than treating transport validity as a timetable.

NS trains are not included. Neither are Connexxion, R-net and other regional services outside the GVB coverage. In particular, the train between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Centraal requires a separate ticket or another suitable travel product.

With a physical card, check in and out using the card as instructed. With a digital card, use the app's QR code at the appropriate scanner for entering and leaving. A booking-email voucher code and the active transport credential are not interchangeable.

If you choose Explorer, arrange transport separately from the start. Compare the travel you would really use, not the maximum possible number of rides. The purpose here is to assess the card's coverage; do not mix it with a separate general GVB or bank-card payment guide.

Canal cruise and bicycle rental: verify the actual offer

Total Experience includes one canal cruise with a participating operator. It is not unlimited boat travel or access to every cruise product advertised in the city. Check the listed company, departure point, service hours and which sailing accepts your card.

The issuer says its standard included Amsterdam cruise does not require a time-slot reservation. Still check the chosen departure before walking there, especially for weather, operational changes or a specific boat type. No reservation requirement is not a promise of immediate boarding on any boat.

The 24-hour bicycle-rental benefit is one rental under a participating provider's conditions. Check opening and return times, suitable bicycle availability, any identification or deposit requirement and what insurance or extras are included. Do not assume an electric bike or every accessory is free.

If you do not want to cycle, leave the rental out of the savings calculation. The same applies to a cruise you would not otherwise buy. Included benefits can be pleasant discoveries, but their advertised prices are not cash saved when they replace no intended spending.

A simple method to decide whether it is worth it

Make three columns: your real individual tickets, the applicable Explorer version plus necessary extras, and Total Experience plus excluded costs. Use your current admission categories and actual dates. Only compare visits that fit the available reservations and opening hours.

As a basic check, the Rijksmuseum's adult ticket is currently €25, far below the €67 adult 24-hour Total Experience price. That one museum alone does not justify the card. Additional visits and transport only matter if you really want and can use them.

Use the final checkout total, and keep discounts as partial savings rather than whole-ticket values. Our guide to museum tickets, concessions and refunds explains how to compare equivalent admissions without mixing different products.

Keep room for opening hours and real life

The Rijksmuseum currently opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00. Other locations have different opening days, last admissions and accessibility arrangements. A card valid until late evening does not keep a museum open beyond its own hours.

Allow time for the visit itself, travelling, security and meals. If mobility, a pushchair or sensory needs affect access, check the individual venue before making it central to the calculation. A broad accessibility label is not a detailed description of every historic room.

For popular dates, our article on queues and advance reservations in peak season helps protect the visits that matter most. A smaller programme with workable bookings can be better than a larger theoretical saving.

Once the essential reservations are set, use RoadMe to develop a personalised trip plan around your interests and the time actually available. The app makes it easier to organise museums, neighbourhood discoveries and breaks into a trip that suits you.

Before paying and before the first use

Check the exact variant, age category, duration or activity allowance, format and delivery conditions. Confirm that the essential museums participate, the required reservations are available and excluded travel is budgeted. A seller's cancellation conditions should be read separately from a general review.

The issuer's Total Experience FAQ says cancellation and refunds are possible only before activation; once activated, cancellation is no longer possible. Check the terms of your actual purchase and do not automatically extend that statement to every reseller or another product.

Keep the card, reservations and support details accessible, and charge the phone if using a digital version. If something fails, contact the issuer or venue staff before buying a replacement blindly. The useful card is the one that supports your chosen trip, not the one that creates the largest list of things to consume.
