Costa Rica Trip Cost: Lodging, Transport, Parks and Guides
Three decisions have a major effect on Costa Rica trip costs: how often you move between regions, how you travel and which natural areas you visit. A modest room rate does not automatically produce an inexpensive holiday. Transfers to accommodation, required rental protection, admission tickets, guides and local access can substantially change the total.
This guide compares three planning models and checked examples without inventing a national daily average. Information was reviewed in October 2026; no bookings were made for your dates. Published starting rates, conditional arithmetic and specific admission prices are identified separately. Dollar figures are USD. Add your own flights, food, dated accommodation offers and transport before treating a calculation as your actual trip budget.
Choose a model before collecting prices
In supported destinations, RoadMe makes it easier to build a personal travel plan around your interests and preferred pace. Try the app to choose the experiences that matter first, then leave realistic time for journeys between them.
Compare budgets for the same party and number of paid nights. A useful working template is two adults, one room with a private bathroom and seven nights. Do not insert a dormitory-bed price or a large family’s shared vehicle costs into that template without changing the units. A rate per person and a rate per room describe different expenses.
| Model | Main spending | Easy to overlook |
|---|---|---|
| Public buses and fewer accommodation bases | Rooms, intercity tickets and local journeys | The final distance from a stop to a lodge or park |
| Shared tourist shuttles | A seat for each traveller and selected transfers | Drop-off zone, baggage and an extra accommodation transfer |
| Rental vehicle | Hire, protection, fuel, parking and tolls | Deposit, one-way return and additional services |
No model is automatically cheapest for everyone. A bus may be attractive for one traveller, while a private transfer is divided differently across a family. A car provides independence but keeps generating fixed costs on days when you hardly drive. Compare the complete services your trip needs rather than choosing by the transport label alone.
Accommodation: price a complete night for the party
Record location, guests, room type, bathroom, meals, air conditioning or fan, parking, taxes and cancellation. A room with a refrigerator and coffee maker is not an apartment with a full kitchen. An isolated lodge may need an expensive approach even if its base room price is lower than an urban alternative.
One actual published example is Playa Negra Guesthouse in Cahuita. Its 2026 Room #3 rate, for two people, starts at $80 per night in the stated low and high periods. The page expressly excludes 13% tax. Peak periods have different conditions, and availability at the starting rate must be confirmed. This is a property example, not a Costa Rica-wide average.
If the property confirms that base, one night with the stated tax is $90.40. Seven nights all confirmed at that same base would total $632.80 for the room for two. This is arithmetic using a published starting point, not a checked available week or the final price of your particular booking. It excludes the rest of the holiday.
Room #3 is described with a private bathroom, ceiling fan and one parking space per room. Do not add breakfast, air conditioning or a full kitchen by assumption. The property also publishes direct-booking conditions; check eligibility for the starting rate rather than expecting every intermediary to offer it.
This example explains one Cahuita room rate. It is not a suggestion to use that location as a base for every attraction in the country. Distant regions need their own travel time and costs. For your dates, find equivalent accommodation in the areas you actually need before adding the nights together.

Buses: a low fare is not the entire journey
The Costa Rica Tourism Board describes bus routes operated by different companies, with different terminals, purchase methods and schedules. San Jose does not have one central terminal for every route. Going to the wrong departure point can add a taxi or cause you to miss the service you intended to use.
Count accommodation-to-terminal transport, the bus, any connection and the final approach after arrival. Establish whether tickets are sold online or require cash at the station. Do not assume every bus reaches the gate of a park or a particular lodge. A remote final section can change which transport option makes sense financially.
Compare the same endpoints against a shuttle. If one service goes between hotels and another ends in the town centre, add the missing parts first. A long journey also reduces the use you get from an already paid accommodation night. Money and usable time belong in the same decision, even though they are recorded separately.
Shared shuttles and private transfers: seat or vehicle?
A shared tourist shuttle is commonly priced by seat, while a private transfer is a service for the agreed party. Read the unit on the actual quote. Two travellers should not compare one passenger’s fare with a full vehicle total; families should also check child arrangements and baggage capacity.
Confirm collection and drop-off zones, the final address, stops, luggage limits and delay conditions. “To La Fortuna” does not necessarily include a lodge beyond the normal service area. Ask about that extra access before paying for two non-refundable bookings that may not connect as expected.
Assess a transfer alongside the day’s commitments. A more expensive option might preserve time for a paid visit, but calculate that benefit rather than declaring it universal. Our guide to public transport abroad explains related ticket and connection decisions.
Car hire: rate, protection and available funds
For a rental, record the complete price with required charges, protection, taxes, additional drivers and return conditions. Add fuel, parking, tolls and any paid delivery. The lowest advertising rate may describe only the vehicle rather than all the conditions you need to collect and use it.
Adobe Rent a Car, for example, specifies mandatory Liability Protection, PLI. It differs from protection for the rental car itself, LDW. Card-based reimbursement of vehicle damage does not automatically replace liability cover. Declining a particular protection product depends on the actual card cover and the company’s conditions; confirm it for your vehicle and card.
Adobe’s published terms also specify a $1,000 security deposit requiring an appropriate credit card; cash and debit cards are not accepted for that deposit. This is one company’s example, not a rule for every Costa Rica supplier. Do not count it as final expenditure, but keep the required funds available separately.
Check what is already included. Adobe’s FAQ says its rates include VAT, but that does not establish a final price for every company’s offer. Do not add tax twice where it is included. Documents, payment, exclusions and return conditions must be checked against the current rental agreement; a budgeting guide cannot replace that step.
Parks: admission, reservation and guide are different services
Entering a protected area usually does not cover every cost of the visit. Access transport, parking, guiding, boats or meals may be separate according to the particular sector. Establish the base ticket’s scope, then price the additions you need. A tour seller may include admission, but that must be explicit in its offer.
| Checked example | Published base admission | Do not automatically assume |
|---|---|---|
| Manuel Antonio, non-resident adult | $18.08 including IVA | Guide, transfer or parking included |
| Catarata Rio Fortuna, foreign visitor | $20 on the operator’s price list | The entire journey or every guided service included |
For two adults, Manuel Antonio base admission is $36.16. Two published foreign-visitor admissions at La Fortuna Waterfall are $40. If your trip includes both independent visits, that admission basket is $76.16, excluding transport, guides and possible additional service charges. It is not a complete excursion total.
This is a spending basket, not a one-day itinerary or advice to visit both from one accommodation base. The locations are in different areas. A number in a budget does not guarantee an available reservation. For Manuel Antonio, SINAC publishes purchasing through its online system; confirm the date, visitor details and current conditions before arranging the surrounding travel.

When to budget for a guide
Do not turn “nature park” into an assumption that a guide is mandatory everywhere. Conditions differ by area, sector and type of visit. For Corcovado, SINAC specifically describes guide requirements on the La Leona–Sirena and Los Patos–Sirena walks. Establish the conditions for your own entry before purchase rather than applying them to the whole country.
Where a guide is optional, it can still be a deliberate separate service. Compare language, duration, party size, qualification, included tickets and meeting arrangements. A private walk and one place in a large group are not identical products. A smaller number does not demonstrate a saving until the service contents are matched.
La Fortuna also has a community dimension. ADIFORT manages the waterfall and directs income into local social, educational and conservation projects. Admission pays for an organised visit and its supporting infrastructure rather than simply access to an internet photograph. Understanding that value helps choose which visits matter to you.
Food, water and daily spending
Build a food budget from actual breakfasts, lunches, dinners, drinks and groceries. Check how many guests an included breakfast covers. If you intend to cook, establish that a usable kitchen exists rather than relying on a mini-fridge. Inexpensive accommodation without convenient shops can require additional transport.
Check the menu and receipt for IVA and service: are they included in the displayed amount, and have you counted them twice? Do not substitute another country’s custom or one assumed percentage for the actual bill. For nature visits, check food and water rules; a general plan to bring snacks does not override protected-area restrictions.
Keep money for necessary water, suitable clothing, connectivity and appropriate transport, not only planned entertainment. Savings should not rely on going without essential supplies. Our guide to trip budgets and easily overlooked expenses provides a broader category checklist.
Currency, taxes and payments already included
Costa Rica uses the colon, while some visitor services publish prices in US dollars. Establish the original tariff currency and the settlement currency before paying. Your bank, the seller and a reference rate can produce different results. The examples here have dollar-based prices; they do not promise that every service accepts dollars on identical terms.
The official tourism resource says departure tax is included in most airline tickets. Only where it is not included does it identify a separate $29 payment per person. Check your airline’s itemisation: adding this automatically for every traveller can count an existing charge twice.
Confirm card acceptance with each supplier rather than relying only on general availability across the country. An online purchase, a rental payment and a security deposit can have different requirements. Nationality alone does not establish the country issuing a card or the protection attached to it.
Try RoadMe to create a personal travel plan around your interests in supported destinations. Planning in the app makes it easier to match the pace to your preferences and choose meaningful stops while leaving realistic transfer time.
Keep non-refundable payments, possible deposits and contingency funds as separate lines. A refundable deposit affects available money but does not always become an expense. An unavailable attraction does not become a confirmed plan merely because its price is known. Match the financial sheet to actual reservations and practical access.

Turn the examples into your own total
- Fix the party, nights and number of accommodation bases.
- Collect equivalent room offers with complete charges.
- Calculate door-to-door transport for each model.
- Separate admission, guides and access to natural areas.
- Fill food and connectivity for the actual people and days.
- Check currency, included taxes and airline charges.
- Keep available funds for the deposit and contingency.
- Remove duplicate entries for included services.
Costa Rica becomes easier to budget when you compare complete versions of the same holiday. Checked prices provide a foundation; your dates, chosen locations and full service contents turn that foundation into a practical total before booking.
