Budapest Airport to the City: 100E, 200E and Ticket Rules
From Budapest Airport to the city, compare 100E Airport Express with 200E and an onward connection. The 100E runs directly to central Pest, serving Kálvin tér, Astoria and Deák Ferenc tér on the city-bound journey. The 200E connects to Kőbánya-Kispest for Metro M3 in daytime; at night it continues to Határ út for the night network. Both airport bus lines operate around the clock, but the metro does not.
Choose by the hotel address, luggage and actual arrival time. The direct express reduces changes for a useful central stop. The ordinary bus can fit an existing public-transport product or a different destination. A car or shared shuttle deserves comparison when the whole group would otherwise face a difficult final section.
Start with the hotel, not the word “centre”
Save the real accommodation address and entrance. Deák Ferenc tér is a useful transport hub, but it is not every visitor's final destination. Check the walk or city connection remaining from the stop that actually serves your address.
Try RoadMe to work out the complete personal trip around your interests and preferred pace. Once the arrival connection is clear, it is more convenient to organise the whole stay in the app, with the discoveries you want and time to enjoy them.
A central Pest address near an express stop creates a different comparison from a hotel across the river in Buda or beside another transport corridor. Compare the full journey on a current map rather than assuming that a bus labelled “city centre” removes all later travel.
100E or 200E: compare the complete connection
| Option | Useful arrival | Main condition |
|---|---|---|
| 100E Airport Express | Central Pest stops and suitable onward city connections | Separate airport fare or an eligible add-on |
| 200E plus M3 | Kőbánya-Kispest, then the relevant metro stop | Ordinary fare coverage for bus and metro |
| 200E at night | Határ út, then the current night connection | Do not assume a daytime M3 continuation |
| 200E plus train | Ferihegy railway station, then a suitable rail service | Rail ticket and dated connection need checking |
| Car or shared shuttle | Actual accommodation address | Capacity, pickup and total price for the chosen service |
The 100E and 200E are alternatives for the airport leg, not two buses you normally need to combine. Their ticket types are different. Buying the airport express ticket does not make it a general city ticket for the other bus.
Where the airport buses leave
The airport places public-bus stops on the arrivals level between the Terminal 2A and 2B areas. After collecting baggage and completing applicable arrival procedures, follow current public-transport signs and identify the actual line and destination.
Read the number before boarding. Both services start from the airport area, but they do not leave you in the same part of the city. A queue beside a bus does not establish that it is the correct one for your ticket or address.
Allow time to prepare payment or open the purchased ticket before joining the boarding flow. If using a phone, have the app accessible and the required connection available. A payment notification by itself is not the travel document you will present.
When 100E is the straightforward choice
The express is useful when Kálvin tér, Astoria or Deák Ferenc tér leaves a manageable last section. Check the closest useful stop rather than staying on to the final square automatically. Reaching the endpoint is not a sightseeing objective when you are carrying cases to a hotel elsewhere.
BKK gives about forty minutes to the centre as a planning reference. Waiting, road traffic and the final walk or change still count. Do not treat that figure as a guaranteed aircraft-to-hotel time or as enough margin for a tightly booked onward train.
The service runs twenty-four hours, with less frequent departures at night than in the busiest daytime periods. Look up the actual next departure after a realistic exit from arrivals. A round-the-clock route can still involve a meaningful wait.
Low-floor articulated buses provide space intended for luggage, but this is not a coach with a separately checked baggage service. Keep your case controlled, leave doors and aisles usable and follow staff guidance. No direct city bus can guarantee an empty vehicle after every flight.
The ticket distinction, without buying a whole new pass
The standard 100E airport single costs 2,500 HUF at the check date of 28 October 2026. Ordinary 24- and 72-hour city travelcards do not cover the express. A reduced airport add-on is tied to specified qualifying passes; it is not available simply because any tourist day card is in your pocket.
For the full product rules, use our Budapest transport guide to tickets, travelcards and BudapestGO. This airport comparison does not require buying a qualifying longer pass merely to obtain a cheaper add-on for one arrival. Compare what the whole trip would really cost.
On 200E, appropriate ordinary tickets or travelcards apply instead. If using separate ordinary singles for bus and metro, account for both required journeys; a single is not a universal surface-to-metro transfer product. A suitable timed ticket or travelcard can create a different comparison, according to its conditions.
Before payment, check that the product matches the line and any intended continuation. One order can contain different tickets for different stages. The airport express fare does not cover a later metro ride just because the journey started at the terminal.

Pay&GO, an app ticket and a paper ticket are different methods
On 100E, the equipped Budapest Pay&GO device lets you buy and validate the airport ticket with a supported bankcard in the same transaction. This is a purchase method on designated equipment, not the same action as scanning an existing BudapestGO ticket.
For a mobile airport ticket, BKK instructs passengers to scan the code before boarding and show the required display. For a paper airport ticket, follow the boarding staff's validation procedure. Do not assume that a method seen on another passenger's phone applies to a different product.
If an intended bankcard does not work, use an available authorised alternative before travelling. Check payment access in advance, especially when relying on a particular bank or phone wallet abroad. The existence of a card terminal is not a promise that every issuer or card will be accepted.
200E and M3: useful when the change suits the address
In daytime, 200E links the terminal with Kőbánya-Kispest, where Metro M3 continues through Pest. Enter the hotel address in the planner to see the best metro exit and any later change. A hotel along that corridor may make this option practical.
Kőbánya-Kispest is an interchange, not the central-city endpoint of the express. Add time to leave the bus, find the appropriate metro entrance and board. The convenience comparison changes with luggage, walking ability and how straightforward the next stage is.
Check the actual M3 service and any replacement arrangements for the date. A metro symbol beside a station name does not guarantee a train departure at every hour. The entire chain needs to operate after you reach the interchange.
When choosing based on an existing travelcard, confirm its start and expiry against the whole arrival. A card that starts tomorrow cannot cover this evening's bus. A nearly expired product is not automatically sufficient for the remaining journey.
At night, 200E is a different connection
After metro hours, 200E extends to Határ út, where the onward journey uses the night network. Do not travel to an interchange expecting a closed M3 platform to function as it does in daytime. Search the whole address with the actual late time selected.
Budapest reorganised its night network from the night of 1–2 July 2026. Old lists of connecting night-bus numbers and stops can therefore be unsuitable even when the airport bus itself still runs. Use the current BudapestGO result rather than reconstructing the connection from an old guide.
For a hotel near a useful 100E stop, the direct express may remove that night change. For another address, compare the full night journey with a current car quote. The right answer depends on the final section, not only on the word “cheaper”.
Our guide to late arrivals, transfers and check-in helps connect transport with access to the room. Confirm reception hours, late entry and how to report a delay before choosing a connection that arrives after midnight.

A train means first reaching Ferihegy station
There is no direct train from the current passenger terminal to central Budapest. Ferihegy railway station is a separate stop reached using 200E; from there, suitable trains can serve Nyugati and other destinations. A search result mentioning an “airport train” must not be read as a platform inside Terminal 2.
Consider the rail option if its actual destination and timing help the trip, for example an onward railway journey. Check the bus-to-train transfer, platform access and ticket coverage separately. Do not add a rail change purely because trains are usually convenient in another city.
Nyugati, Keleti and Kelenföld are different Budapest railway stations. A train towards one does not solve a booking from another without a city connection. Keep the full station name with any onward rail reservation and compare a realistic transfer margin.
For a central hotel served well by an airport bus, a railway detour may add work rather than save it. Compare one complete bus option against one complete rail option using the same luggage and departure assumptions.
Luggage and mobility: count the changes honestly
A change means moving the actual cases, not merely a line on the route result. Check walking distance, lifts where required, the station entrance and the final hotel approach. A low-floor first bus does not establish a step-free route through every later interchange.
With a pushchair or a mobility requirement, check the entire accessible chain and current lift information. Ask the accommodation about its entrance as well. A small distance on the map can still include stairs or an inconvenient doorway.
For several people, count each person's applicable ticket and the group's baggage. Do not compare one passenger's bus fare against the full car price, or divide a vehicle quote before confirming everyone fits.
Taxi, private transfer and shared shuttle
A direct car can be useful when luggage or the final address makes public changes difficult. Compare a current quote or the applicable metered service to the actual entrance. Read capacity, pickup arrangements and any required equipment before relying on the headline price.
A shared airport shuttle can be door-to-door while still carrying other passengers and making other stops. That is different from a private transfer. Ask about the relevant waiting and drop-off arrangement rather than assuming “door-to-door” always means immediate exclusive departure.
Use the current airport transport information and the chosen provider's instructions to find the service. Avoid setting a fixed present-day taxi budget from an old article's approximate amount: traffic, current conditions and the actual address affect the comparison.
The return stop may differ from the arrival stop
Save the airport-bound stop separately. At Kálvin tér and Deák Ferenc tér, follow the current departure information. Astoria is served towards the airport only by specified early departures, so an arrival there does not establish a daytime return boarding point.
Choose the date and direction in the current timetable. Do not stand at a convenient arrival stop assuming every bus will reverse from there. If the flight is early, compare the actual night-to-morning connection rather than copying your daytime arrival.
Work backwards from the airline's airport requirements and add waiting, road allowance and the walk inside the terminal. A published bus journey time alone is not enough for check-in or a flight deadline.
A practical choice before leaving home
Write down the hotel entrance, useful stop, first possible departure after arrival, full ticket coverage and final walk. Compare 100E directly with 200E plus the actual continuation. Add a car option only when it solves a real group or access problem.
For an address near an express stop and a late arrival, fewer changes may justify the separate fare. For a suitable M3 corridor and existing ordinary coverage, 200E can be practical. For a difficult last section with several cases, a current direct-car comparison can clarify whether convenience is worth the difference.

In RoadMe, it is more convenient to work out the entire personalised trip around your interests and pace. Try organising the stay in the app with a realistic arrival day, so the transfer supports the experiences you want from Budapest.
Separate the direct 100E, the ordinary 200E connection and the final accommodation leg. Once all three are clear, choosing the transport becomes a comparison of a usable journey rather than an airport ticket price on its own.
