Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper train: tickets, classes and stations
For the Bangkok to Chiang Mai sleeper train, check the train number, sleeping accommodation and departure station separately. An overnight departure does not automatically mean you have bought a bed, and a ticket labelled Bangkok does not mean you should go to Hua Lamphong. The main sleeper services depart from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal.
Information checked on 27 October 2026 against SRT's published timetable, train descriptions and D-Ticket help. Timetables and carriage availability can change. Your issued ticket and current railway announcements take priority for the actual journey.
Choose the service and accommodation together
Start with your preferred departure and arrival, then confirm the available carriage and berth. The train number identifies a service; the accommodation line identifies what you can use overnight. A cheaper seat on an overnight train is still a seat, not a sleeper waiting to be allocated later.
For supported destinations, RoadMe develops a personal trip plan around your interests and preferred pace. Planning in the app makes it easier to leave room for an overnight journey and a comfortable first day after arrival.
This connection is a way to make the transfer part of the holiday, but it is not a high-speed alternative to flying. Judge it by the experience and the time your trip can accommodate. An overnight train may replace some hotel time without guaranteeing hotel-quality sleep or an immediately available room in Chiang Mai.
For broader preparation, our overnight-train guide covers choosing a sleeping place and packing for the night. Here the task is more specific: identify the Bangkok–Chiang Mai service, buy the correct accommodation and reach the right station.
The principal evening departures
| Train | Published departure | Published arrival next day | How to compare it |
|---|---|---|---|
| No. 9 | 18:40 | 07:15 | Uttarawithi service with CNR first- and second-class air-conditioned sleeping accommodation. |
| No. 13 | 20:05 | 08:45 | Later service with several accommodation categories; verify your actual carriage. |
| No. 51 | 22:30 | 11:40 | Later departure and later arrival; inspect the accommodation offered before selecting. |
These are reference times from the current published Northern Line timetable, not a live punctuality or seat-availability promise. The corresponding scheduled journeys are approximately 12 hours 35 minutes, 12 hours 40 minutes and 13 hours 10 minutes. All arrival times in this table are on the following calendar day.
The daytime No. 7 is a different option, rather than a cheaper overnight berth. If a booking search returns several services, read the departure time and carriage description instead of selecting the first available fare. Choose both a service you can catch and accommodation you actually want.

Which Bangkok station should be on the ticket?
For the main services discussed here, look for Bangkok Krung Thep Aphiwat, also described as Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. The long-distance relocation from Hua Lamphong took effect in January 2023. Older articles and photographs can still direct you to the previous terminal.
Hua Lamphong remains relevant to other railway services; it has not simply disappeared from the network. That is why typing a generic “Bangkok railway station” into a map is a poor substitute for reading the origin on your issued ticket.
Also distinguish Krung Thep Aphiwat from the names of nearby transport connections. A metro or suburban-rail arrival is not the same as being at your long-distance boarding point. Allow time to find the main terminal's information displays and follow current directions.
At the Chiang Mai end, choose Chiang Mai railway station as the destination. It is not a bus terminal or an airport transfer. Arrange the onward journey to your accommodation separately, using the actual expected arrival and a plan that still works if the train is delayed.
First class, second-class sleeper or seat?
| Accommodation | What to verify | Common misunderstanding |
|---|---|---|
| First-class sleeping accommodation | Compartment, booked berth and the conditions for the privacy you require. | A first-class booking does not automatically establish sole use of every berth in a compartment. |
| Second-class sleeper | That the selected product is explicitly sleeping accommodation, its berth and air-conditioning category. | Second class is not one identical product on every train. |
| Seated accommodation | Seat type, ventilation and suitability for a long overnight journey. | A night train does not turn an ordinary seat into a purchased bed. |
SRT's current No. 9 description identifies the CNR air-conditioned service with first- and second-class sleeping accommodation. Its official No. 13 description lists several classes, including first class. Do not assume that every later departure has no first class or that every carriage has the same arrangement as No. 9.
For second class, the practical distinction is between sleeping accommodation and a seat, followed by the actual upper or lower berth. Where a choice is available, select it before paying. Check the final assigned berth rather than relying on a general preference written in an enquiry.
If sole occupancy or adjacent places are essential, verify how they must be booked through your chosen channel. A request for privacy is not the same as confirmed exclusive accommodation. Families should check the actual allocation for every passenger before accepting the final purchase.
How to book through SRT D-Ticket
- Enter the official SRT D-Ticket service and register or sign in.
- Select the Northern Line, exact origin, Chiang Mai destination and departure date.
- Enter the travelling party and search for services.
- Choose the train, then inspect the available carriage and sleeping category.
- Enter the actual passengers' required details accurately.
- Review the assigned places, total price and terms before confirming payment.
The official help describes an initial automatic seat assignment that can be reviewed and changed where choices are available. Do not rush past that stage if being together matters. A completed passenger list alone does not establish that your preferred places have been allocated.
Use each traveller's actual name and requested identification details. The help includes a foreign-traveller registration option and passport information. Keep the document used for the booking available for travel; do not assume the ticket can simply be transferred to a different person later.
The departure date is the evening you board, not the morning you reach Chiang Mai. If you arrive on Tuesday morning, an overnight ticket may need Monday's departure. Check both dates before payment, especially when coordinating hotel nights or another transport booking.

Booking ahead and interpreting unavailable results
The current D-Ticket help terms state an advance reservation maximum of 180 days for listed reservable services. Treat that as the system's published upper limit, not a guarantee that every train, date and berth is immediately offered at the full horizon.
Older announcements describe earlier 90-day arrangements for selected services. Do not use those historical notices as a universal current rule. If your date cannot be selected, check the actual sales calendar and service conditions instead of automatically declaring the train sold out.
If a search returns only seats, that does not confirm sleeping accommodation remains. Conversely, a missing preferred berth is not proof that every departure is impossible. Review acceptable dates, other evening services and accommodation categories separately.
An agency's pending request is not the same as an issued SRT ticket. Read what the seller promises, when confirmation occurs and what happens if the requested accommodation cannot be obtained. Do not arrange an essential connection around an unconfirmed enquiry.
Compare the total fare for the same product
The useful price is the final total for the same origin, train, carriage, berth, date and passengers. A broad advertised fare range can include inexpensive seats and more private sleeping accommodation; it should not be presented as a single sleeper price.
When comparing an agency with SRT, separate the railway fare from any booking, payment or delivery services. A higher amount may reflect a different product or an added fee. Establish the difference before deciding which offer represents better value.
Use the actual Thai-baht amount shown for your purchase. A display in another currency may introduce conversion or bank costs, and an indicative conversion is not your guaranteed charge. Our travel-budget guide helps include the additional station transfers, meals and accommodation consequences.
Also consider the practical first morning. If you need a room immediately after an early arrival, ask your hotel about access rather than assuming standard check-in starts when the train arrives. Saving one hotel night does not automatically mean there will be no related accommodation expense.
Payment confirmation and your usable ticket
The published D-Ticket terms list card payment and PromptPay. These are different methods, not a promise that every foreign-issued card or overseas banking app will work. Check the options actually offered and complete any bank authentication your payment requires.
A reservation reference awaiting payment is not the same as an issued travel ticket. The help explains that the ticket is emailed after payment under the applicable process. Keep the confirmation and inspect train, stations, dates, passenger and place information before leaving the purchase session.
If a payment appears uncertain, check your booking status and bank record before buying another ticket. A missing email does not itself establish that nothing was issued. Resolve the original transaction through the selling channel to avoid holding duplicate paid bookings.
SRT's current descriptions for No. 9 and No. 13 accept the original ticket, its PDF file or the D-Ticket app for the specified automated checks. They explicitly distinguish these from a photograph of the original paper ticket, which is not accepted as its replacement.
Arriving at Krung Thep Aphiwat
For No. 9, SRT advises reaching the station at least 30 minutes before departure; the No. 13 information advises 30–60 minutes. Allow extra time for an unfamiliar terminal, luggage and the journey across Bangkok. These are arrival margins, not a reason to reach the building exactly at departure.
The current service descriptions direct passengers towards the long-distance boarding arrangements around Gate B, with access to the upper platforms. Follow the actual displays and staff instructions on your date. Do not treat an old diagram or another train's platform as a permanent assignment.
Have your valid ticket and identification ready before the controlled boarding area. Keep the PDF accessible without depending on a last-minute inbox search, and consider a paper backup. The railway's acceptance of a PDF does not mean any cropped image with part of a code is an equivalent document.

Prepare for your booked carriage
Pack what you will need overnight in a small accessible bag so you do not have to open every suitcase in a shared space. A light layer, personal toiletries, an eye mask and necessary personal items can be more useful than an elaborate extra packing system.
Keep valuables and travel documents with you and follow staff instructions when seats are prepared for sleeping. The actual layout and available facilities depend on the carriage. Do not transfer promises about Wi-Fi, charging points, food or bathroom arrangements from another service's photograph.
SRT lists a dining car on its descriptions of No. 9 and No. 13, but check the actual food service for your journey. Buying a sleeping berth does not automatically establish that all meals are included. Prepare sensible essentials before boarding rather than relying on an unverified all-night service.
For assistance with boarding or other specific needs, contact the railway before purchase. A modern carriage label is not enough to establish every platform transfer or individual accessibility arrangement. Explain what help is required for your exact train and station.
Changes, refunds and arrival expectations
D-Ticket provides separate change and cancellation processes. They have conditions and may involve fees; changing a date is not the same as transferring the passenger's name. Read the terms shown for your actual ticket before cancelling a scarce berth to search for another.
The help states that card refunds follow the original card route rather than becoming cash, and PromptPay-paid tickets require the stated station cancellation process. If you bought through an agency, establish which actions must be handled through that seller. Do not assume every payment method has the same online refund procedure.
Finally, allow for possible timetable changes or delays and avoid an immediate essential connection after arrival. Keep your accommodation contact available and arrange the final transfer from Chiang Mai station. A comfortable first day is easier when it does not require the overnight train to arrive and release you instantly.
Once your rail booking is fixed, let RoadMe develop a personal plan for a supported destination around the places you care about. Coordinating the wider trip in the app helps protect a comfortable pace after the journey.
Before paying, check six lines: train number, departure station, departure date, arrival date, carriage type and assigned berth. Together they describe the journey you are actually buying, much more clearly than the broad phrase “Bangkok sleeper train”.
