Baku Airport to the City: H1 Bus, Taxis and Payment

For an inexpensive journey from Baku’s Heydar Aliyev International Airport to the city, use the H1 Airport Express bus towards Koroğlu and the 28 May railway and metro area. For a direct journey to your accommodation, compare an official airport taxi or a confirmed transfer. The decision depends on the last part of the trip as much as the airport fare: 28 May is a transport hub, not the entrance to every central hotel.

The H1 operates around the clock and its published fare is 1.30 AZN per passenger. A new reusable BakıKart currently costs 3 AZN according to the card operator’s Azerbaijani tariff information. That card price is separate from travel credit. Information was checked on 25 October 2026; taxi quotes, pickup instructions and the next bus departure need checking for your actual arrival.

Choose transport for the complete journey to your door

Choose the bus when its stops suit your accommodation and you can comfortably manage the onward journey with your luggage. Choose a car when the final leg, a family’s needs or several bags make a transfer inconvenient. A night arrival does not rule out H1, but it can change what transport is available after you leave the bus.

OptionUseful whenCheck before committing
H1 Airport ExpressYou want the published bus fare and a useful connection at Koroğlu or 28 MayPayment, current departure and the final journey

App-booked carYou can access the app and its airport pickup instructionsConfirmed driver, pickup point, total and vehicle
Prebooked transferYou need an agreed meeting arrangement or special requirementsFlight delay, waiting, child seats and included charges

Save your hotel’s exact address and entrance instructions before deciding. A property described as “central” may still require another ride or a walk with steps after the airport bus. Compare the final leg for your own address rather than assuming every traveller should leave H1 at the same stop.

For the sightseeing days after arrival, try RoadMe: in a supported city, the app prepares a personalised programme around your dates, interests and pace. It is a convenient way to organise the rest of the trip once transport and access to your accommodation are settled.

Keep the first journey simple if you are tired. The lowest bus fare can still be a good choice at night, provided you have a workable plan from its stop to the door. Conversely, a direct car only solves the transport part: it does not ensure that the accommodation will admit you before your booked check-in time.

H1 is a bus, with stops at both passenger terminals

Despite the Aero Express name, the airport service is a road bus rather than an airport train. The airport describes departures from Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to Baku Railway Station near 28 May, with intermediate stops at Surakhani Bridge and Koroğlu. The operator also identifies Koroğlu and 28 May as its main city interchange points.

After collecting your luggage and completing the arrival formalities that apply to you, follow the current Aero Express signs to the boarding point for your terminal. The airport places BakıKart machines near bus stops outside the terminal exits. Do not walk to a different terminal simply because a photograph in an old guide shows a stop there.

Check the H1 identification and direction before boarding. For any uncertainty, the operator has an airport information stand staffed during the day. That published daytime assistance is not a promise of a staffed desk at every hour of an overnight arrival.

The airport gives approximately 30 minutes for the journey to the railway-station area, with weather and traffic affecting it. This is bus travel time, not a guarantee that you will reach a hotel 30 minutes after landing. Add disembarkation, any border procedures, baggage reclaim, payment preparation, waiting and the final journey from the stop.

There is a little history behind the terminal names you will see: Terminal 1 opened on 23 April 2014. That is a fact about the newer terminal, not a reason to assume all flights use it. Check the terminal on your flight information, particularly when arranging a meeting or returning for departure.

Bus fare, card cost and the first-journey total

The current H1 fare is 1.30 AZN. A reusable BakıKart is a payment card carrying a balance; buying it does not itself pay for a bus journey. The card operator’s current Azerbaijani information gives a 3 AZN purchase price, so a new card plus one H1 fare comes to 4.30 AZN before any onward transport.

ItemAmountWhat it covers
One H1 ride1.30 AZNOne passenger’s airport-bus journey
New reusable BakıKart3 AZNThe card itself, with travel balance separate
New card plus one H1 ride4.30 AZNDerived first-journey total, without onward transport
Two H1 rides2.60 AZNTwo chargeable passenger journeys, excluding a new card
Metro journey paid with BakıKart0.60 AZNA separate city-transport fare

You may still encounter 2 AZN for the card on airport information and in older translations, including English text on the card website. For a new purchase, use the current 3 AZN card-price information rather than building a budget around that older figure. Treat it as a purchase cost, not a refundable deposit unless the operator confirms a refund right for your exact product.

The airport says a group can use one reusable card. Each passenger still needs a paid journey: sharing the plastic does not make the party travel for one fare. For example, two passengers using one newly purchased card need 3 + 1.30 + 1.30 = 5.60 AZN for that card and their airport-bus rides, before any additional transport. Confirm the validation procedure with staff.

Do not add the card cost again every time you travel, and do not count its purchase price as spendable balance. If you already have a usable card with enough credit, the relevant airport-bus cost is the ride. If a suitable bank-payment method works for you, buying a separate transport card may be unnecessary.

Pay before the journey becomes a problem

The bus operator currently lists BakıKart, bank-card payment, Apple Pay, Google Pay and the m10 and Birbank applications for H1. Its English information expressly includes local and international bank cards. That is not a guarantee that every foreign-issued card, mobile wallet or bank account will work in every circumstance.

Check your own card’s issuer restrictions and payment settings, and keep a usable alternative. Do not assume that the presence of a Visa or Mastercard logo settles acceptance for your bank. A phone wallet and the underlying physical card may also be treated differently by the payment system; follow the validator instructions for the method you actually use.

Cash for a card machine and cash paid to a driver are different things. BakuBus states that its buses do not accept cash fares. If you rely on BakıKart, obtain and load it before boarding rather than expecting the driver to sell a cash ticket. Keep some local cash available if you plan to use a machine instead of an already functioning digital method.

The card operator lists BakıKart terminals, MilliÖN terminals, its app and web portal as loading channels. Its tariff page lists 0.10, 0.20 and 0.50 AZN coins and 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 AZN banknotes for the card terminals. Check the particular machine’s instructions and displayed balance before inserting a large note; do not assume that it will return change in cash.

When validating, look for the successful-payment indication before assuming the fare was taken. If it is unclear, ask for help rather than making repeated uncertain taps. Where several people use a shared card, establish how many journeys were accepted so that a failed attempt does not leave someone without a paid ride.

For the wider distinction between buying a transport product and validating an actual journey, see public transport abroad: tickets, zones and validation. Payment for an airport bus does not automatically include a metro ride simply because the same plastic card works in both systems.

Operating hours and the onward connection

H1 runs 24 hours a day. However, the official pages do not give one consistent interval: BakuBus currently advertises 15 minutes, while the airport page shows 20 minutes during the day and 45 minutes overnight. Check the next departure at the stop or with airport transport staff rather than treating any one interval as a guaranteed maximum wait.

Around-the-clock operation describes the route, not an immediate departure whenever you leave arrivals. A late aircraft, traffic or a temporary operational change can affect how the first journey works. Keep a backup that remains usable if the bus or its payment does not fit your situation.

The metro’s published normal operating hours are 06:00–00:00. These are not a promise of a last train from every platform at midnight, nor do they establish that your whole onward journey remains possible after you arrive at the interchange. Check the current direction and any service works for the date of travel.

Choose between Koroğlu and 28 May by comparing the complete onward journey. Do not get off at an earlier stop merely because its name includes “metro” if it adds unnecessary changes. At night, first establish whether you will continue by an available service, a car or a comfortable walk to the exact address.

When comparing waiting with a direct car, include your own priorities: fatigue, the size of the party, luggage and access to payment. A slightly more complicated bus journey can be perfectly workable for one traveller and unsuitable for a family with tired children. There is no single best option for every arrival.

Official taxis, app pickups and prebooked transfers

The airport identifies an official taxi pickup area outside Terminal 1 on the second line, where taxi marshals assist passengers. It also describes a Baku Taxi booth in Terminal 1, booking through the 1000 call centre and a mobile application. Follow current airport signs and staff instructions rather than accepting a vehicle solely because someone approaches you in arrivals.

Before travelling, ask how the fare is calculated: meter, displayed app quote or an agreed transfer price. Give the precise destination and confirm any airport, waiting or other applicable charges. The airport describes different taxi vehicle categories; one quoted amount should not be treated as the fare for every car and every address.

For an app-booked car, check that the trip is actually confirmed, then follow the assigned pickup point. The app location may differ from the official taxi queue. Compare the vehicle and registration details with the booking before entering, and confirm the selected payment method. An app being downloadable does not guarantee a suitable car is available when you need one.

For a prebooked transfer, provide the flight number, local arrival date, terminal, passenger count, luggage and destination. Ask whether the flight is tracked, when included waiting begins, what extra waiting costs and what happens after a substantial delay. A sign with your name is a meeting arrangement, not proof that every delay or charge is covered.

Arrange a child seat, assistance or space for large luggage explicitly where needed. Do not infer those arrangements from a general description such as “family transfer” or the number of passenger seats. Capacity needs to work for both people and bags. Save the provider’s confirmed terms and a contact you can reach after arrival.

Night arrivals: the room matters as much as the ride

A bus operating all night does not mean your room is available all night. If a flight lands after midnight, check which hotel night covers the time you want to enter. A booking whose standard check-in starts that afternoon does not automatically provide a bed in the early hours of the same calendar date.

Confirm how the accommodation will admit you, whether the reservation will be held after a delay and who answers overnight. Save the address and entrance instructions locally. A late-arrival request in a booking form is not the same as the property confirming access at your expected time.

The separate guide to arranging a late-night transfer and check-in explains that coordination in more detail. For Baku, make the concrete chain clear: your terminal, chosen payment, H1 stop or car pickup, final address and confirmed room access.

When you know how much rest you will have, use RoadMe to prepare a personal programme for a supported destination city around your interests and preferred pace. It is easier to begin exploring with a coherent day plan than to assemble separate saved places while tired.

Prepare the return journey separately

Do not assume the city-bound drop-off is also the exact airport-bound boarding point. Check the current H1 stop and direction near your chosen interchange. For a car, confirm the terminal and requested pickup time again. A hotel address saved for arrival is not enough to organise the return automatically.

Work backwards from the airport arrival time required by your airline and flight, then allow for the drive or bus, waiting and reaching the stop. The airport’s approximate 30-minute bus journey is only one part of that calculation. Check current traffic and operational notices before leaving, particularly during large city events.

Before the flight to Baku, make sure you can answer five questions: which terminal, which transport, which usable payment, what happens after the interchange and how you enter the accommodation. With those answers saved, the arrival is a sequence you can follow rather than a series of decisions to make outside the terminal.
