For public transport in Rome, choose between a 100-minute BIT, a continuous ROMA24H/48H/72H ticket and the weekly CIS according to your actual journeys. Then choose how to carry the entitlement: a physical ticket, an activated app ticket or the individual Tap & Go bank-card service. A payment method and a fare product are different decisions.

The two rules most likely to change your choice are the BIT’s single Metro journey and the different validity of the weekly ticket. One BIT is not unlimited Metro entry for 100 minutes. CIS ends at midnight on the seventh counted day, whereas the hourly tourist tickets run for their stated continuous hours from first validation.

## Start with your journeys, then choose the ticket

If you expect only occasional movements, compare the BIT with paying through Tap & Go. For repeated travel, compare the appropriate hourly ticket or CIS with the BITs you would otherwise purchase. Count chargeable journeys under the product’s rules, not every boarding or reader touch.

> Planning in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) is more convenient than collecting disconnected suggestions: the app develops a personal trip plan around your interests, time and pace. Try choosing what you actually want to explore before buying transport, so the pass supports your days.

| Your pattern | Compare | Important boundary |
| ---------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Occasional city journeys | BIT or individual Tap & Go | 100 minutes, with one Metro journey |
| Repeated travel over one or several days | ROMA24H, 48H or 72H | Continuous hours from first validation |
| Frequent travel across a week | CIS against shorter products | Ends at midnight on the seventh counted day |
| A group with one person paying | Separate suitable tickets for each traveller | One bank card cannot pay for a simultaneous Tap & Go group |
| Airport or out-of-town connection | The exact service’s fare | A city ticket does not include every airport or regional connection |

Do not add unwanted journeys to justify a pass. A largely walkable day can need less transport than a day with a distant visit and a return to the accommodation. Convenience may be worth a difference in price, but it is separate from money saved on journeys you would never have bought.

## Current Rome ticket prices and time limits

These ordinary fares were checked in October 2026\. The extended-duration fares changed in July 2025, so older tables can still show lower amounts. The BIT remains €1.50\. Prices refer to the transport products, not admission to museums or archaeological sites.

| Product | Price | Validity |
| ------- | ----- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| BIT | €1.50 | 100 minutes from first validation, one Metro journey |
| ROMA24H | €8.50 | 24 continuous hours from first validation |
| ROMA48H | €15 | 48 continuous hours from first validation |
| ROMA72H | €22 | 72 continuous hours from first validation |
| CIS | €29 | Until midnight of day seven, including the validation date as day one |

ROMA24H can continue from one afternoon to the next. With CIS, even a late-evening start counts that date as day one. It does not provide seven full 24-hour periods.

## What one 100-minute BIT permits

The BIT allows eligible city travel within its time and network conditions, including transfers between covered surface services. On the Metro it permits one journey, which can involve changing lines inside the paid network. Leaving through the exit gates and returning for another independent Metro trip is not generally included simply because some minutes remain.

ATAC specifies an exception for passing gates when changing between lines A and C at San Giovanni. Treat this as the stated interchange exception, not permission to leave any station for a visit and re-enter. Follow the signs for the actual connection and keep your ticket throughout.

Validate at the start and at the required transfer points, including access to the Metro. ATAC also instructs passengers changing vehicles within the BIT window to validate as required for the continuing journey. Do not carry a procedure from another city where stamping once is the complete rule for every subsequent boarding.

For a new surface boarding, make the required validation before the 100 minutes expire. The applicable continuation rules do not create a fresh 100-minute period at every touch. Check the recorded start and the product; a reader accepting the ticket is not a reason to reinterpret it as unlimited all-day travel.

On eligible urban Trenitalia services, the BIT covers one train journey in second class under the included-area conditions. It is not a general return train ticket. For a connection involving rail, check the section and required inspection procedure rather than assuming every train accepts the same city entitlement in the same way.

## Buying a physical ticket and understanding the extra card charge

ATAC lists its ticket offices, vending machines and authorised retailers such as participating tobacconists and newsagents among the purchase channels. Check that you receive the product requested, not only a receipt. Keep the ticket and the required identification available for inspection.

A machine may issue a rechargeable Chip on Paper support card rather than the older ticket format shown in a guide. Current ATAC information explains an additional €0.50 charge when a new card is issued with the first purchase of one or two BITs. Other ticket purchases receive the card without that issue charge, and subsequent reloads do not add it again.

That charge is for the support, not an increase in the BIT fare. Keep the reusable card if you plan to reload. When comparing a first small purchase with another channel, separate the card issue cost from the journeys. Do not count a new-card fee on every later use.

Validate according to the actual format. A contactless support and an older magnetic paper ticket are not necessarily presented to the reader in the same way. Follow the indicated reader and confirmation, rather than forcing the card into an opening based on a photograph from an old travel article.

## Tap & Go: one traveller, one personal card or device

With Tap & Go, a compatible contactless bank card or payment-enabled device supplies your individual entitlement. Present only the chosen medium. Take a card out of the wallet so the reader does not detect several cards at once. Wait for the green confirmation and, at a Metro gate, for it to unlock.

ATAC lists compatible cards across several payment networks, including Visa and Mastercard, but the actual issuer and card settings still matter. Check that your chosen method is enabled for the service and keep another accepted way to obtain a ticket. The contactless symbol alone does not guarantee every card will work.

Keep using exactly the same medium for the journey and fare calculation. A plastic card, its version on a phone and its version on a watch are separate media even when linked to the same bank account. Switching between them can prevent the system joining the intended transfers or applying the appropriate fare.

Tap again whenever changing vehicles as required. Within the valid ticket period, the eligible transfer touch does not automatically buy another BIT. Do not skip the reader merely to avoid a supposed additional charge. Conversely, tapping repeatedly cannot pay for several people travelling together.

Each paying traveller needs their own appropriate ticket or personal payment medium. Agree on this before reaching a busy gate, particularly if one person has been organising everything. If the family does not have suitable separate bank media, use individual physical or app tickets instead of attempting repeated group taps.

## How the daily best fare works

The ordinary Tap & Go journey is priced as a €1.50 BIT. ATAC’s current Italian description says the ROMA24H best fare applies at the sixth chargeable BIT within the relevant 24 hours, bringing the total to €8.50\. The window is measured from the first tap, not simply from midnight.

The word “BIT” matters: six reader touches are not necessarily six purchased BITs. Valid transfer taps within one ticket can remain part of that same entitlement. Count the journeys that require new tickets and let the service process the valid transfers using the same medium.

This best fare is not a reason to promise automatic weekly, 48-hour or 72-hour capping. If comparing a longer ticket, obtain that product through its supported purchase channel and compare it with your expected travel. Do not assume continuing to tap will create every pass listed in a tourist ticket table.

An immediate bank notification can show a temporary authorisation rather than the settled total. Review completed charges before treating it as an extra ticket. Registration is not required just to use ordinary Tap & Go, while the MyAtac reserved area is used for checking the service’s charges and certain other functions.

If the card or device is refused, do not treat the failed touch as permission to travel. Check the message and ask for assistance or obtain a suitable ticket through another channel. Keep the time and service details for an enquiry, without sending full card details through unofficial messages.

## App tickets are different from paying with a phone wallet

ATAC Roma and supported B+ partner services provide digital ticket purchase options. Follow the instructions for the actual app and product: buying, activating and presenting the ticket are separate tasks. A receipt stored on the phone does not replace a valid digital travel title.

A ticket inside an app and a bank card inside a phone wallet work differently. The first requires the app’s ticket procedure; the second uses the payment medium through Tap & Go where supported. Decide which you are using before approaching the reader, particularly if the same phone contains both.

Keep enough battery and retain access to the actual entitlement for inspection. Confirm payment and activation before entering the paid area or starting the journey under the product’s rules. Do not assume another city’s protective activation timer, screenshot policy or offline requirements apply unchanged in Rome.

At inspection, present the ticket or the payment medium actually used. Extended rail or bus connections can have specific check procedures: ordinary Metro contactless use does not prove every regional operator can inspect the same device in the same way. Confirm the requirements or choose an appropriate physical or app product for the entire connection.

## Airports, children and sightseeing passes: avoid assumptions

Ordinary city tickets exclude the Leonardo Express between Termini and Fiumicino and specified special Fiumicino airport connections. That does not mean every airport-related service is excluded: ATAC’s city lines 520 and 720 to Ciampino are included under the stated city-ticket conditions. Check the exact service rather than buying on the basis of an airport name alone.

Metrebus Roma’s urban coverage is different from regional Metrebus Lazio products. A destination outside the included city section can need another fare. Before buying, identify the operator, station or stop and the included boundary, especially where a regional train continues beyond Rome.

Children’s free-travel conditions also differ between operators. ATAC describes accompanied city travel for its child age category, while Trenitalia has a separate under-four rule with conditions. Check the exact age threshold and required arrangement for your family; do not extend one city-bus rule to every railway journey.

ROMA24H is a transport ticket; Roma Pass is a separate sightseeing product with its own benefits and conditions. Similar names and hour counts do not make them interchangeable. Compare the attractions you genuinely want to visit, availability and any reservations before paying for a sightseeing product solely to obtain transport.

## Make the connection workable, not just correctly paid

Rome’s first Metro line, now line B, was inaugurated on 9 February 1955\. The present system combines underground and surface transport, so a convenient station still leaves a final walk to the destination. Check that approach and the entrance needed rather than treating the station name as the door of your visit.

Use current ATAC service information for line changes and lift availability. Renovations can alter a tram connection or make a step-free interchange unavailable. A photograph shows a place and vehicle, not proof of today’s timetable, working lift or accessible entrance.

For a timed visit, leave room for the interchange and the walk after leaving transport. For a late return, check the complete date-specific connection. Paying for a pass does not guarantee that a desired service is operating at the hour you need.

## Before your first journey

- Choose the correct product, urban area and validity period.
- Check whether each person has a ticket or their own eligible Tap & Go medium.
- Validate at the start and required changes; wait for acceptance.
- Keep the same payment medium for contactless transfers and best fare.
- Retain the actual ticket or device for inspection.
- Check airport, regional and child-fare exceptions for the actual service.

ATAC warns that it does not send SMS requests to confirm or pay for Tap & Go. If such a message arrives, check through the operator’s official service rather than following its payment link. Your valid travel entitlement should be established through the ticket or payment channel you deliberately chose.
