A standard Museo Reina Sofía ticket gives individual access to the collection and temporary exhibitions at the main Madrid site. The current published general price is €12\. Free admission hours are available, but you still need a ticket, and a show with a special price or its own timed admission may have separate conditions.

Choose among three different needs: a paid visit at a suitable time, admission based on a documented concession, or a shorter visit during the public free hours. Then check the building. The main Sabatini and Nouvel buildings are not the same destination as the museum's exhibition palaces in Retiro Park.

## Start with the visit you want

If a particular collection or exhibition matters, check its location and current entry arrangements before choosing the date. A free evening can suit a focused visit; a paid daytime ticket may give you more room to explore. Neither option guarantees that every gallery or individual artwork will be available.

> Try [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to have a complete personal trip worked out around your interests and pace. In the app, it is more convenient to give the museum a suitable place in the whole Madrid stay before fixing other bookings around it.

Do not begin by buying an expensive package just because its title mentions priority access. First establish whether you need general admission, an audio addition or an actual guided tour. Those are different services, and an online ticket does not remove the museum's entry checks.

## The main ticket choices

| Option | Published amount | What changes |
| -------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| General admission | €12 | Individual access to the collection and temporary exhibitions under their conditions |
| Two-visit admission | €18 | A first visit and a second visit within one year |
| General admission with collection audio for mobile | €18 | Audio content in addition to the admission described |
| Public free admission hours | Free | A ticket is still required; the available visiting period is shorter |
| Accredited free or reduced admission | Depends on eligibility | Accepted documentation and ticket-office procedure |

Prices were checked on 28 October 2026\. The two €18 products serve different purposes: one provides a second visit, the other adds collection audio. Equal prices do not make their contents interchangeable. Read the selected product name again before paying.

Temporary exhibitions are included in the general description, but some may require a designated date and time. A general ticket is not a promise to enter any capacity-controlled exhibition whenever you reach its room. Check the current exhibition listing if that show is the main reason for coming.

## Paid times and Tuesday closure

The main site normally opens on Monday and Wednesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 21:00\. Tuesday is closed. Sunday opening is 10:00–14:30\. The much earlier Sunday closure matters when you choose between a morning and an afternoon visit.

From opening until the beginning of the free period, the museum assigns a visiting time slot when you buy admission. Choose it around a realistic arrival, not the moment your train is due to reach Madrid. Include the journey to the right entrance and time for entry procedures.

Check the museum's calendar for the actual date. Published closures include New Year and Epiphany, 1 May and certain Madrid holidays, as well as 24, 25 and 31 December. Local holiday arrangements can change; a normal weekday timetable does not override a dated closure.

## Free hours: the practical schedule

| Main-site day | Regular free period | Important limit |
| ------------------ | ------------------- | ------------------------------------ |
| Monday | 19:00–21:00 | Individual visitors; ticket required |
| Tuesday | Closed | No normal evening free period |
| Wednesday–Saturday | 19:00–21:00 | Individual visitors; ticket required |
| Sunday | 12:30–14:30 | The museum closes in the afternoon |

You can reserve the free-hours ticket online. Free admission does not mean entering without the required document or ignoring capacity. The museum's free-ticket description excludes temporary exhibitions with designated time slots or special pricing.

For the normal free period, the museum describes admission without an individually assigned visiting slot. Separate full-day free events may use a selected date and time. Follow the actual confirmation rather than assuming every zero-price ticket operates identically.

## Two hours of opening are not two hours in the rooms

Last admission is thirty minutes before closing, and the main-site rooms are cleared fifteen minutes before closing. On a regular free evening that means last entry at 20:30 and room clearance at 20:45\. On Sunday, those limits are 14:00 and 14:15.

These are cutoffs, not recommended arrival times for a satisfying visit. A late arrival leaves very little time after entering, finding the correct floor and reaching the collection. Choose a small focus if you use the free period, and allow for the queue.

The museum identifies 10:00–12:00 and the start of the 19:00 free period as busy times. It suggests 14:00–18:00 for a potentially calmer visit on days when those hours are open. That is provider guidance, not a promise that a particular room will be quiet.

## Free days are another product

The museum's current calendar lists 18 April, 18 and 22 May, 12 October and 6 December as free-admission dates. Check the year and available booking before relying on an annual list: the actual calendar and admission conditions remain decisive.

A free-day ticket can be reserved online. Its confirmation may specify a date and time, and capacity controls still apply. Do not transfer the ordinary evening ticket's arrangements to a special free date without reading the actual product.

If a named exhibition is essential, check its inclusion separately. Free entry to the museum does not establish access to every special-price event, activity or controlled exhibition. Keep an alternative date in mind if your preferred admission is unavailable.

## Concessions require proof, not just a category

The museum lists free admission for under-18s, people over 65 and eligible students, among other categories. Students aged 25 and under are listed, with additional conditions for older students in specified fields. Use the current detailed eligibility page rather than a seller's abbreviated age label.

Accredited free tickets are collected at the ticket offices on the day of the visit. Bring the official current accreditation and the required identity document or passport. The document should show its validity and expiry where applicable.

A particularly useful rule for international visitors concerns writing systems. The museum says accreditation in a non-Latin script is not accepted on its own; the corresponding international credential or a certified translation is requested. Arrange this before travelling instead of assuming staff will translate a document at the desk.

Reduced categories also depend on specific conditions. Do not infer eligibility for an officially recognised large-family or cultural scheme merely from the everyday description of your group. Ask which proof is accepted and whether your particular case qualifies.

## Booking and keeping the right document

Begin through the museum's own visit information and choose the ticket option that matches your category. Check the date, the selected time if applicable, visitor numbers and the named product. A general ticket, an audio bundle and a guided visit should not be compared as identical purchases.

After booking, retain the actual ticket and confirmation in an accessible place. The museum describes admission as personal and non-transferable. Keep it throughout the visit: it also allows you to leave and re-enter under the museum's conditions.

If a payment appears to fail, check the order and any bank charge before purchasing again. Cancellation, a change of date and recovery of a missing confirmation are separate questions. Read the terms of the actual seller instead of assuming every online provider offers the same refund policy.

## Sabatini and Nouvel: one main site

The main site has the historic Sabatini building and the Nouvel building as access points. Its general address is Calle Santa Isabel, 52\. For visitors who have already bought online, the museum recommends entering through Nouvel at Calle Ronda de Atocha, 2.

This recommendation is useful for arrival planning; it is not a guarantee that a particular doorway will always operate without changes. Read your confirmation and any current onsite directions. An access arrangement for assistance or a group may have its own instructions.

The two names do not mean you need two ordinary museum tickets just to move between the main site's public exhibition areas. Choose a product for the collection or exhibition you want, rather than duplicating a purchase because the museum has two architectural parts.

## The Retiro palaces are separate destinations

Palacio de Velázquez and Palacio de Cristal are the museum's exhibition venues in Retiro Park. Their exhibition-room admission is described as free. They are not the Sabatini or Nouvel entrances, and visiting them does not provide admission to the main collection.

Opening and installation periods must be checked for each palace. The museum's current notice says Palacio de Cristal is temporarily closed for restoration, with an artwork covering the building. Do not promise an interior visit because an older photograph shows its glass hall open.

For the Retiro venues, the published seasonal timetable differs from the main site: October–March 10:00–18:00 and April–September 10:00–21:00, subject to closures and exhibition installation. A specific closure notice overrides the generic timetable. Confirm the actual exhibition before travelling across the city.

## Audio and services: choose what is useful

The €18 mobile collection-audio bundle is a different product from a live guided visit. Read which content and languages it provides and how it is accessed. A translated ticket-selling page does not establish the language of a guide or the coverage of every temporary exhibition.

For mobile audio, bring comfortable headphones and prepare your device according to the purchased instructions. Do not assume a printed ticket alone contains the audio or that someone will accompany your group through the galleries. If accessibility matters, ask the museum which format suits your needs.

Check current bag, photography and access rules before the day. Avoid arriving with travel luggage unless you have confirmed an appropriate storage arrangement. A ticket or audio upgrade does not remove security procedures, room restrictions or the need to follow staff instructions.

## When a second visit or a wider pass helps

The €18 two-visit product can make sense if you genuinely want to return within its stated one-year period. It is personal admission for two visits, not two people sharing a cheaper ticket on one day. Read how the return visit is arranged before making a second dated commitment.

A wider art pass is a separate comparison. It should be considered only if you intend to visit the included museums and its actual conditions fit. Do not buy it to avoid choosing a collection, and do not assume it includes every temporary exhibition or a guided tour.

Our [Prado ticket guide](https://roadme.io/blog/prado-tickets-booking-concessions-exhibition-slots/) covers the different admission choices at that museum. Keep its free hours and eligibility rules separate from Reina Sofía's; nearby institutions do not operate a single shared ticketing timetable.

## Give the visit a clear purpose

The Sabatini building's earlier life as a hospital and the later Nouvel addition help explain the contrast between historic and contemporary spaces. The collection's modern and contemporary art offers more than a single famous work. Choose one interest you can explore without turning every room into a task.

Our [independent trip planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-plan-your-first-independent-trip-from-idea-to-departure/) helps connect that choice with accommodation, transport and the rest of the stay. Protect time for the museum and a pause afterwards instead of attaching another fixed booking immediately to the advertised closing hour.
