A passport can be unexpired and still fail a destination’s entry requirements. To check yours, identify the rule for your nationality and document type, establish whether it runs from arrival or departure, and compare the required date with your passport’s expiry.

There is no universal six-month rule. Check before making non-refundable bookings, after an itinerary change and shortly before departure. The examples below were verified in October 2026; they explain the method rather than approve an individual journey.

## Build the check around your actual journey

Record your passport’s issue and expiry dates, issuing country, nationality and document type. Do not infer the expiry date from the usual lifespan of passports issued by your country.

An ordinary passport, emergency passport and other travel document may be treated differently. If you hold more than one passport, establish which one you will use for the journey and any relevant permission.

Next, list the local arrival and departure dates for each destination, all connections and any return to a country you have already visited. Your flight home may be later than your departure from the territory whose rule you are checking.

| Item | Record |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Traveller | Nationality and any relevant residence status |
| Document | Type, issuing country, issue date and expiry date |
| Destination | Local arrival and planned departure |
| Connection | Airport, onward flight and whether border control is involved |
| Return visit | New entry date and relevant entry permission |

For the wider coordination of transport and bookings, see the [multi-country travel planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/multi-country-travel-how-to-coordinate-transport-documents-and-bookings/).

> For sightseeing within your chosen dates, you can outline a day-by-day programme in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) around your interests and pace. Check passport and entry requirements separately with the relevant authorities.

## Find the rule for your nationality and document

Start with the destination’s immigration or border authority, or its embassy or consulate. Look for Passport validity, Travel documents or Entry requirements.

Check who the guidance covers. Advice written for citizens of one country should not be applied to a different passport. Requirements for an ordinary visitor may differ from those for a resident, a returning citizen or a holder of an emergency document.

Read the full conditions, including exceptions. A headline saying “six months required” can omit the date from which the period runs or a nationality-specific exemption.

Then review the airline’s document information for the whole itinerary. IATA’s Travel Centre is another useful source for passport, visa and health requirements based on a traveller’s details. A general checker is only as useful as the scenario it covers; a country name alone may be insufficient.

Save the source, the relevant wording and your check date. If the official guidance and carrier information appear inconsistent, ask the destination authority and airline to clarify your exact case before committing to the journey. A general validity enquiry can usually describe dates and document type without including a full passport number.

## Understand the different validity rules

The reference date matters as much as the number of months.

These examples were checked on October 11, 2026:

| Example and scope | Passport timing requirement |
| ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| An ordinary short visit to the Schengen area under the general third-country entry rules | At least three months after intended departure from the area, and issued within the preceding ten years on entry |
| Entry to Singapore using a foreign passport | At least six months from arrival; Singapore passport holders are excluded from this requirement |
| Visiting the UK as a Standard Visitor | The passport or travel document must remain valid throughout the stay |

These are passport timing examples, not complete entry checklists. Visa requirements, residence exceptions, document recognition and permitted stay need their own assessment. The Schengen area is not interchangeable with Europe.

For visitors to the United States, CBP describes a general requirement for validity six months beyond intended departure, with country agreements that waive the additional period. Check the applicable exemption rather than assuming that every visitor follows either a six-month rule or a duration-of-stay rule.

A recommendation to keep extra validity is also different from a mandatory minimum. Renewing early may be practical, but a preferred buffer does not establish the legal entry condition.

## Calculate the required expiry date

Use **the rule’s reference date plus its required period**, then compare that result with the document. If there is a separate issue-date condition, check it independently.

Here is an illustrative calculation using Singapore’s arrival-based requirement for a foreign passport:

| Detail | Date |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------- |
| Arrival | November 12, 2026 |
| Planned departure | November 27, 2026 |
| Arrival plus six calendar months | May 12, 2027 |
| Passport expiry | April 20, 2027 |

The passport covers the planned stay but falls short of the arrival-based validity requirement. Returning home before expiry does not resolve that shortfall.

For a departure-based rule, start with the intended departure instead. Under a three-month requirement, leaving on February 15 means checking against May 15, not a date calculated from the outbound flight.

Count calendar months when the rule specifies months and days when it specifies days. Do not replace every month with 30 days. If the dates sit at the end of a month or the wording leaves a boundary unclear, obtain an authoritative clarification.

A change to the trip may change the calculation. Allowing some practical margin can help with altered plans, but it does not extend the period you are permitted to stay.

## Check issue date, condition and recognition too

Expiry is only one part of document readiness. A passport may have enough remaining validity but fail a separate rule about when it was issued or whether its type is recognised.

For example, an unusually extended passport can have an expiry date beyond the point at which it meets a ten-year issue-date requirement. Read both dates rather than treating one as proof of the other.

Inspect the identity page, binding and legibility, and check any blank-page requirement. If the document is damaged, ask the issuing authority about replacement and the destination about acceptance. Do not assume that keeping several unused months resolves a physical-document problem.

Emergency and temporary passports deserve their own check. Do not apply ordinary-passport advice to them without confirmation.

Repeat the process for every traveller, including children. One adult’s valid passport does not establish that the family’s documents meet the requirements.

## Include connections and repeat entries

Establish whether a connection remains airside or involves passing immigration. Baggage collection, separate check-in, a change of airport or accommodation outside the transit area may turn a connection into an entry.

Transit conditions can differ from visitor-entry conditions. Avoid both assumptions: that a connection always needs the full ordinary entry requirements, or that it never needs a passport-validity check. Ask the carrier and relevant authority about the actual transfer.

If the itinerary leaves a country or shared travel area and returns, check the new arrival date as well as any permission for another entry. A changed intermediate flight can affect more than one document check.

Passport validity and the need for a transit visa are related checks, but one does not answer the other.

## Resolve a shortfall and review linked documents

Identify what fails first: remaining validity, issue date, document recognition or condition. You may need a new passport, different dates or a revised itinerary whose requirements you have checked.

Ask your issuing authority about the available renewal process and delivery arrangements. Do not assume another country’s processing time or a commercial service’s promise applies to your application.

After receiving a new passport, review your booking details, visas and electronic travel permissions. Follow each provider’s procedure; permissions do not all move to a new document in the same way.

As a specific UK example, GOV.UK states that an ETA is linked to the passport and a changed or expired passport requires a new ETA. This concerns travellers who need that authorisation; it is not a general requirement for everyone visiting the UK.

Save relevant confirmations and document copies in private storage, and open the downloaded files without an internet connection before leaving. Copies help retrieve information but do not replace required originals. The [phone preparation guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-prepare-your-phone-for-travel-settings-documents-and-useful-apps/) covers those access checks.

> Once your documents and dates are settled, download your destination city in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) while you have internet access. Its maps and navigation will then be available offline; keep passport copies and entry confirmations separately.

Before departure, confirm **the accepted document type, the correct reference date, sufficient validity and the conditions for every stage**. Meeting the expiry requirement is one part of preparing for entry, rather than a guarantee of admission.
