Choose a public sauna in Helsinki by the kind of visit you want, not simply by the word sauna. Löyly combines mixed public saunas and conditional sea access; Allas combines pools and saunas; Kotiharju offers a traditional neighbourhood setting; Sompasauna is a free, self-organised community experience without ordinary spa facilities.

Information checked on 27 October 2026\. Prices, opening arrangements and special closures can change. The most useful preparation is to check booking, swimwear, changing facilities, towels and the type of water access at the particular venue.

## Start with what would make you comfortable

Ask whether you want to visit with people of different genders, wear a swimsuit, have a staffed reception and showers, or combine sauna with swimming. These are separate decisions. A famous building does not automatically provide the practical arrangement that suits your party.

> For supported destinations, [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) develops a personal trip plan around your interests and preferred pace. Organising the visit in the app makes it easier to leave enough time for a distinctive local experience without rushing the rest of the day.

Do not start with an assumed universal Finnish dress code. Helsinki's public venues have different rules. Some mixed saunas require swimwear, one traditional public sauna forbids swimming trunks inside, and a community sauna makes clothing optional.

The choice is also about service expectations. If you want someone at reception to explain lockers and facilities, a staffed venue can be the easier first visit. A free community site is a different experience rather than the same package with its admission price removed.

## Four formats compared

| Venue | What distinguishes it | Important preparation |
| ---------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Löyly | Mixed public smoke and wood-burning saunas, separate changing and shower areas. | Advance booking recommended; swimsuit required; sea access depends on conditions. |
| Allas Pool | Pools together with several saunas near the Market Square. | Swimwear required in public and mixed areas; towel is not included. |
| Kotiharju | Historic public sauna with separate men's and women's sides. | No reservation needed for the public sauna; its sauna-room dress rule differs from Löyly. |
| Sompasauna | Free mixed community sauna without staff. | Bring water, towel and a padlock; no showers or changing rooms. |

This is a practical comparison rather than a ranking. The more convenient option for one person may be the wrong atmosphere for another. Agree on the few features your group needs before comparing photographs or deciding that a sea view is essential.

Kotiharju's history adds context: it was built in 1928 and retains its traditional public-sauna layout. Löyly represents a different contemporary waterfront setting. You can appreciate both without expecting the same facilities or treating one as the only authentic Finnish experience.

## Prices: compare what the admission actually includes

| Venue | Current reference admission | Towels and essentials |
| ---------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------- |
| Löyly | €29 for a two-hour public-sauna visit. | Towel, seat liner, shampoo and shower gel included. |
| Allas Pool | €19 on the standard weekday tariff; €24 on the weekend tariff. | Towel not included; published rental is €8.90. |
| Kotiharju | €16 for ordinary public-sauna admission. | Published towel rental is €4. |
| Sompasauna | No admission charge. | Bring your own essentials; donations are optional. |

Allas' standard tariff applies Monday to Thursday and Friday before 2 p.m.; its weekend tariff starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and runs through Sunday. Public holidays and local holiday periods can use the weekend tariff. Compare your actual visit time, not just the first amount in the price list.

The current Allas single-ticket page lists two-hour validity. Do not borrow a three-hour duration from an older search snippet or a separate course package. Read the product actually selected before purchase, especially if you plan another fixed appointment afterwards.

At Löyly, swimsuit rental is published separately at €8 for two hours with a deposit. Bringing your own can simplify the visit. These costs are not identical to those at another sauna, so check the complete personal total rather than assuming every paid venue includes the same kit.

For the wider holiday, our [travel-budget guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-budget-for-a-trip-and-include-costs-you-might-forget/) helps include rentals and transfers without losing track of the main expense. A slightly higher entrance price may already include things you would otherwise hire separately.

## Booking and cancellation differ by venue

Löyly recommends reserving public sauna in advance. The visit has its stated duration; a restaurant booking is a separate question and should not be treated as a sauna reservation. Its published Finnish conditions allow cancellation without charge at least 24 hours before the reserved start.

Allas sells some single admissions in advance online and the rest on site. Its prebooked entry has the selected time, with a stated 15-minute flexibility before or after it. Prebooked tickets cannot be exchanged or cancelled under the published rules.

For an advance Allas booking, collect the wristband at Allas Shop using the stated process. Reserving entry does not guarantee a sun lounger. A time-specific ticket and a day-long entitlement to every area are not the same product.

Kotiharju says a reservation is not needed for its public sauna. Its separately bookable private sauna is a different arrangement. Sompasauna has no staffed appointment system: being always open does not promise a prepared hot room or an empty bench waiting for your arrival.

## The swimsuit rule is not the same everywhere

At Löyly, changing and showers are separated, but the public saunas and other shared areas are mixed and require swimming costumes. Bring swimwear you can actually use, not just a towel with the expectation that a general national custom overrides the venue's rule.

At Allas, proper swimwear fabric is required; underwear and sports clothing do not qualify. Swimwear is compulsory in public areas and mixed saunas. Some designated women's or men's floating-sauna sessions have different provisions, so read the current sign for the particular space.

Kotiharju's instructions say no swimming trunks or underwear in the sauna room. If you do not want to be naked, a fresh towel covering is allowed. This is not the same dress arrangement as a mixed waterfront venue, even though both are public saunas in Helsinki.

Sompasauna is mixed and clothing optional: visitors may use a swimsuit or be naked. Neither choice makes it acceptable to stare at or photograph other guests. Pick the setting that fits your comfort rather than arriving with a rule learned from a different venue.

## Changing rooms, showers and lockers

The most easily overlooked difference is whether ordinary facilities exist. Löyly provides the stated separate changing and shower areas. Allas has changing-room lockers operated by its wristband, so visitors do not need their own coin or padlock for those lockers.

Kotiharju provides lockable lockers with keys available in the lockers. Sompasauna instead asks you to bring a padlock for valuables and says there are no changing rooms. It also has no running water, showers or washing facilities.

These differences affect the rest of the day. If you need a proper shower before an evening commitment, choose a venue that provides it rather than assuming the sea replaces a washroom. If changing in a self-organised setting is uncomfortable, that is a valid reason to choose another format.

Pack valuables and clothing according to the actual storage arrangement. A venue's mention of lockers does not establish that a large travel suitcase will fit or can be left all day. Ask about unusual baggage before carrying it to the entrance.

## Sea swimming, a seawater pool and no obligation to dip

Löyly offers access to the sea when conditions allow. Its admission does not guarantee that sea entry is possible in every weather situation. Check the current operation and instructions rather than treating year-round access as an unconditional daily promise.

Allas' seawater pool is a pool using water pumped from farther offshore, filtered and treated with ultraviolet technology. It is not simply permission to jump into the working harbour. The warm-water pool is another option within its published facilities.

You do not need to build the visit around a cold plunge. Choose the parts of the experience that suit you and follow the venue's directions. Cooling down can be a break rather than a requirement to enter water, and water access conditions are separate from sauna admission.

Do not use photographs to infer a safe independent entry point. Swim only where the venue permits and follow current staff instructions. At Allas, jumping into pools is prohibited and children require guardian supervision.

## A simple first-visit sequence

1. Check your booking, entry time and that day's exceptional notices.
2. At a staffed venue, ask how the wristband, locker and session time work.
3. Change according to the specific venue and shower where facilities and rules require it.
4. Use the provided or required seat cover and respect the shared space.
5. Take breaks, keep water available and avoid turning the visit into a competition.
6. Allow time to change and leave before the relevant session or facility closes.

This is a practical orientation, not a prescribed heat treatment. Allas advises breaks, hydration and consideration for others; Kotiharju asks guests to preserve sauna peace. There is no need to invent an exact mandatory temperature or number of minutes for every visitor.

Ask before adding more steam and follow the local arrangement. Kotiharju specifically prohibits visitors adding wood to the storage-heated stoves. Do not operate equipment simply because it resembles a sauna you have used elsewhere.

## Privacy and atmosphere are part of the visit

Keep the phone away in private areas. Allas prohibits photography and filming in changing rooms, showers and saunas. Pool-area pictures must respect privacy and leave other guests and staff unidentifiable; professional work has a separate permission process.

Sompasauna also prohibits photography in the sauna and the use of speakers. A free setting is not a public film set. The simplest approach is to enjoy the visit without trying to document other people or carry a phone through every space.

Use a normal considerate voice and leave the place pleasant for the next visitor. At Kotiharju, drinks belong in changing or outside areas rather than sauna and washrooms. Allas' sauna etiquette also excludes alcohol inside the sauna.

For someone choosing travel experiences more broadly, our [guide to destinations that fit your interests](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-choose-a-vacation-destination-that-fits-your-interests-and-budget/) explains the same useful principle: choose the atmosphere and activities you want, rather than collecting famous names.

## Children and accessibility need a specific check

Löyly's rules allow younger visitors with a guardian; children under ten can enter free when sharing a parent's locker, with their towel needs handled separately. Do not turn a general age statement into a claim that the public venue never permits children.

Allas' rules require children to be supervised, with non-swimmers kept within the stated close reach of their guardian. Check the product and facilities for the actual ages. Child admission policies are not interchangeable between the four venues.

Allas says its main-building changing, washroom and sauna facilities are wheelchair accessible, but the overall site is not fully accessible and the pools have no wheelchair ramp or lift into the water. Sompasauna also describes itself as not accessible, despite a ramp option for one sauna.

If assistance is important, explain the whole required journey: entrance, changing, shower, sauna and any water access. A ramp at one point does not answer all of those questions. Obtain the current arrangement directly before committing to the visit.

## Confirm the actual address and closing arrangements

Löyly is on Hernesaarenranta, Allas beside the Market Square, and Kotiharju at Harjutorinkatu. Sompasauna's current published address is Kansanpuistonpolku 5\. Use its current arrival instructions rather than an older location saved in a travel article.

Sompasauna says you cannot drive to the sauna itself. Allow for the last part on foot and prepare what you need in advance. Its open community format does not provide the same reception, transport access or changing arrangements as a staffed waterfront complex.

At Allas, ticket sales end before general closing and swimming and sauna time finish 20 minutes before closing. Check that day's notices as private events can affect access. An advertised closing time is not a promise that you can start the full visit just before it.

> After choosing your sauna, let [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) develop a personal plan for a supported destination around the experiences you enjoy. The app makes it easier to preserve a relaxed pace and enough time before the next commitment.

The right choice is the venue whose booking, clothing, facilities and water arrangements match your expectations. Confirm those four things, pack accordingly and give the experience room in the day. That preparation matters more than trying to visit every famous sauna.
