The Hamburg CARD and the Hamburg City Pass solve different problems. The CARD gives discounts, with public transport included only in the transport version. The City Pass bundles selected admissions and activities; its public transport ticket is an optional upgrade. Choose between them by pricing the things you actually want to do, rather than counting every attraction in the advertising.

This comparison uses the products and conditions displayed by Hamburg Tourism, hvv and Turbopass in October 2026\. Prices and partners can change. A pass does not reserve every visit, guarantee immediate entry or turn an ordinary harbour ferry into a sightseeing cruise.

## Which Hamburg pass fits your visit?

Start with your intended paid visits and the transport you need. If you mainly want freedom to walk, use public transport and decide on a few attractions later, compare the Hamburg CARD with ordinary transport tickets. If several specific admissions and tours already appeal to you, calculate the City Pass against those exact tickets. Buying neither is a valid result.

## Hamburg CARD: transport and discounts are separate decisions

Hamburg Tourism currently sells the CARD with transport from €12.90 and without transport from €4.50\. The cheaper version does not give permission to board trains, buses or ferries. It may suit someone whose local journeys are already covered by another valid ticket, but the partner discounts must still save more than the card costs.

The single transport version covers one adult and up to three children aged six to fourteen. The group version covers up to five people of any age. On the current official price list, a one-day single card costs €12.90 and a one-day group card €24.90; the two-day equivalents cost €24.90 and €43.90\. Check the selected dates and version before paying.

Two adults buying separate one-day single cards would pay €25.80, compared with €24.90 for a group card: the difference is €0.90\. For two days, two single cards total €49.80 against €43.90 for the group card, a €5.90 difference. These are comparisons within the CARD range, not proof that either beats an ordinary hvv ticket.

A group card is shared, rather than five independent tickets. The group travels together and the named holder must be present; it cannot be divided between people going in different directions. If one person wants a museum and another plans a separate afternoon, include that restriction in the decision.

## Understand the calendar before choosing the number of days

The Hamburg CARD begins at midnight on the chosen start date and runs until 06:00 on the morning after its final validity day. It does not provide a fresh twenty-four-hour block from the first scan. A one-day card first used in the evening therefore gives much less sightseeing time than one used that morning.

For a two-night stay, write down the actual arrival and departure times. You might need transport on three calendar dates but have only one full day for paid visits. One product lasting throughout the hotel stay is not automatically the cheapest arrangement; compare separate arrival transport and the card days that genuinely earn their keep.

The City Pass is also tied to the dates selected at booking. Turbopass's current FAQ says activation happens automatically on the specified date. Do not rely on a reseller's statement that you can postpone the start simply by avoiding the first scan. Its days cannot be paused or extended just because a museum is closed.

## What the transport versions cover

The transport Hamburg CARD covers second-class local travel in Hamburg AB. The City Pass's optional transport ticket also covers the AB area, including U-Bahn, S-Bahn, buses and hvv harbour ferries. The airport is included in the covered local network; Turbopass specifically includes the airport connection in its transport option.

AB is a fare area, not a promise that every train from Hamburg or every excursion outside the city is covered. Check the fare area and service category for any journey beyond the intended city visit. A pass for urban transport is not an interchangeable ticket for long-distance trains.

A scheduled harbour ferry and a narrated harbour cruise offer different experiences. The former is part of public transport when covered by your ticket; the latter is an attraction with its own operator, departure point and conditions. Count a cruise only if you want that particular experience, not because both involve being on the water.

A sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus is another separate product. Its stops and operating times may work for a sightseeing day, but it should not be treated as a replacement for every ordinary bus journey. If you already hold a transport entitlement, check its actual validity before paying for a second overlapping one.

## What the City Pass includes, and what “included” means

Turbopass currently lists attractions such as the Michel, Hamburger Kunsthalle, International Maritime Museum, Speicherstadt Museum and the museum ships Rickmer Rickmers and Cap San Diego, alongside a harbour cruise, an Alster boat trip and a sightseeing bus. The current list also shows Hamburg Dungeon as a new included attraction. Older comparisons that call it excluded should not settle your purchase.

The same sales page has a separate section of discount partners. An entry in that section is not a prepaid admission. For example, a discount on another activity does not remove its remaining ticket price. Read the individual benefit, its operator and its redemption instructions before adding it to the savings calculation.

Miniatur Wunderland does not appear in the included attraction list checked for this comparison. Do not assume an attraction is covered because it is famous, pictured in a Hamburg guide or close to another included venue. Verify the current listing and book separately when needed.

Each included attraction is generally available once per person during the pass period. A pass is personal and cannot be passed to a companion after use. Selected tours or visits require reservations, and availability can be limited. Buying the package does not secure every preferred time slot.

To compare entry categories, timed slots and concessions before choosing a package, use our guide to [museum and exhibition tickets](https://roadme.io/blog/museum-exhibition-tickets-times-concessions-refunds/). The useful question is whether the pass covers the experience you wanted, with conditions you can actually meet.

## Calculate the value without inventing a packed itinerary

Use three totals: separate tickets plus necessary transport; the CARD plus the remaining discounted admissions; and the City Pass plus any extra admissions and transport. Use the final basket price for your dates and party. We do not quote a fixed City Pass price here because the booking choices determine the offer.

1. List the paid experiences you would choose without any pass.
2. Find each visitor's actual separate price, including applicable concessions.
3. For the CARD, replace those prices only with confirmed partner reductions.
4. For the City Pass, set covered admissions to zero but retain every extra charge.
5. Add transport once, according to the version selected.
6. Remove one uncertain visit and calculate again.

The last step matters. If a pass wins only when every possible stop happens, the saving is fragile. A delayed arrival, a long lunch or a museum that deserves more time can reverse the result. A modest saving with a comfortable programme is more meaningful than an impressive theoretical saving with no spare time.

For a transport-free CARD starting at €4.50, the combined confirmed reductions must exceed its actual price before it saves money. If the discounts merely match the fee, you have gained no financial margin. Compare this against the concessions or advance offers you can already obtain without a card; do not subtract two incompatible discounts.

## Choose visits for their substance

Hamburg's museum choices support quite different interests. Maritime collections and museum ships suit someone curious about shipping and work at sea; the Kunsthalle suits someone who wants time with art. A tower visit offers a different kind of experience again. These are choices about how you want to spend your attention, not interchangeable entries in a count.

The Speicherstadt Museum adds context to the warehouse district rather than simply offering another indoor stop. If the history of trade and the working harbour interests you, that context can be worth more than squeezing in a second attraction you did not particularly want. Choose the subject first and then check the pass benefit.

Distinguish a building, an exhibition, a tower and a guided tour even when their names overlap. An included visit to one part does not automatically mean every special experience on the same site is included. Read the partner entry for exactly what you receive and whether a separate booking step remains.

## Families and different interests change the arithmetic

Do not compare a family pass total with adult-only individual prices. Write each person's age beside every proposed visit and use that venue's own child or concession rules. A child carried on a transport card is not automatically entitled to free admission at an attraction.

The CARD's group format is attractive only if travelling together suits the day. The City Pass uses individual admission entitlements, so different interests can be easier to accommodate, but check the separately issued transport conditions before assuming a group can split its transport ticket too.

For a museum enthusiast travelling with someone who prefers outdoor time, different ticket choices may be more sensible than buying identical attraction packages for both. Compare the whole party's cost and enjoyment. An unused paid benefit for one person cannot normally be reassigned to the other.

## Booking, digital access and cancellation

Open the purchase confirmation well before the first visit. Check names, dates, duration, transport selection and each attraction's redemption instructions. Turbopass provides a browser-based digital pass link; its current FAQ does not support promising that a printed City Pass works. Save the relevant codes as instructed and keep a charged phone available.

The Hamburg CARD has its own delivery and display instructions. Do not transfer the City Pass rules to it. If buying through an intermediary, check which document is the usable ticket and which is merely an order confirmation. Ask the issuer about anything unclear before the first journey.

Turbopass's FAQ permits cancellation up to twenty-four hours before the first validity day, with the applicable fees governed by its terms. That is not an unconditional promise of free cancellation. Unused attractions do not generate partial refunds, and closures do not automatically extend the pass.

## Common questions before paying

### Does Hamburg CARD include free museum entry?

Its core benefit is partner discounts, not a blanket museum admission package. Check the particular reduction and any optional upgrade separately. “Up to” is a maximum advertised saving, not the reduction at every partner.

### Is the City Pass always better for a weekend?

No. A weekend describes your available time, not the visits you want. A few included experiences may justify it, or separate tickets may cost less. The deciding total is the one for your chosen dates and realistic programme.

### Can two people share one pass?

A Hamburg CARD group ticket covers its permitted party travelling together. The City Pass gives personal admissions and requires an individual pass per visitor. Neither arrangement means that a single personal admission code can be handed around.

### Do these rules apply to other cities?

No. Names, activation rules and included venues differ. Our separate [Paris Museum Pass comparison](https://roadme.io/blog/paris-museum-pass-inclusions-reservations-value/) shows why a museum-focused product needs its own calculation rather than assumptions borrowed from Hamburg.

## The final purchase check

Keep a short record of the chosen visits, each person's price, necessary transport, exact start date and the total with each option. Confirm the current partner list, check reservations and remove any experience that would make the day feel rushed. Then buy the least expensive arrangement that still supports the trip you want.

If the totals are close, choose the arrangement with the clearest conditions and the least pressure to do more. The purpose of a tourist pass is to simplify an enjoyable visit. A good decision can be a group CARD, an individual City Pass, a transport-free discount card or ordinary tickets purchased separately.
