The best way from Guangzhou Baiyun Airport to your hotel depends first on whether you arrive at Terminal 2 or Terminal 3\. T2 has direct access to Metro Line 3 at Airport North. T3 has an intercity railway station, but no direct metro station: reaching the metro involves another connection. For a late arrival or several large bags, an official taxi or a booked car may be the simpler choice.

There is an important change behind that advice. Terminal 1 stopped passenger operations for renovation in May 2026, and its associated metro and intercity stations were suspended. Old instructions telling every visitor to use Airport South can therefore send you to the wrong place. This guide reflects the arrangements checked in October 2026; confirm your flight's terminal and the services for your travel date.

## Start with the terminal and the hotel address

> Make the arrival fit the rest of the trip: [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) can build a personal travel plan around your interests and pace in supported destinations. Organising the day in the app is easier than piecing together an overfilled sightseeing list after a tiring flight.

Do not choose transport to an abstract “city centre”. Guangzhou covers a large area, and a hotel in Tianhe, an address near the old city and accommodation around Pazhou can require different final connections. Save the hotel's exact name and address in Chinese, its nearest station and a contact number. An English hotel name alone may have several similar search results.

Check the terminal for your actual flight and date, including the operating airline on a codeshare. The airline that sold the ticket is not necessarily the one operating the aircraft. For the return journey, check again rather than assuming you will depart from the same terminal where you arrived.

| Arrival terminal | Rail option | Key distinction |
| ---------------- | ------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| T2 | Metro Airport North, Line 3 | A metro station linked to the terminal transport centre |
| T2 | Intercity Baiyun Airport North | A different railway system from the metro |
| T3 | Intercity Baiyun Airport East | Station in the transport centre on level B2 |
| T3 | Bus to Gaozeng, then Metro Line 3 or 9 | No direct metro station at T3 |
| T1 | Passenger services suspended for renovation | Do not follow an old Airport South instruction without checking its status |

## From T2: when Metro Line 3 makes sense

At Terminal 2, follow the airport signs for the metro and Airport North station, written 机场北. China Southern's terminal information places the metro entrance on the western side of the transport centre, at basement level B1\. Use current signs on arrival rather than treating a saved picture of a corridor as a permanent instruction.

The airport branch of Line 3 connects into the city network. Before entering, check the direction, your interchange and the station nearest your hotel. Having “Line 3” written down is less useful than a complete connection to the correct exit at the destination. A stop that looks close on a map can still leave an awkward walk with bags.

Choose the metro when the full route is reasonably simple, the service is running and your luggage is manageable. Count the airport walk, ticket or payment setup, waiting, interchanges and the final walk. A train journey time is only one part of the door-to-door transfer, not a promise of reaching every central hotel in half an hour.

Do not change terminals simply because another guide recommends a different station. T2 already has a metro link. A terminal transfer adds handling and waiting, and it may make an otherwise straightforward arrival more complicated.

## From T3: metro requires a connecting bus

Terminal 3 does not have a direct metro station under the arrangements checked. One option is the dedicated bus between T3 and Gaozeng, written 高增, where Metro Lines 3 and 9 are available. The published connection uses Exit B at Gaozeng in the airport-bound direction. From T3, follow the current signs to the transport centre's departure point for the Gaozeng connection.

The official ordinary timetable published in May 2026 gives T3 to Gaozeng as 06:35–22:40, and Gaozeng to T3 as 06:15–23:15\. These directions are not interchangeable. A visitor leaving the airport cannot use the later 23:15 airport-bound departure as evidence that the city-bound bus still operates.

The published bus fare is CNY 2 and the ride takes roughly fifteen minutes, with frequency varying by period. That fare is for the connecting bus, not for the entire journey into Guangzhou. You still need the metro journey and any onward connection. Confirm the current timetable, fare and departure bay on your date, especially around holidays.

Also check whether the metro connection remains usable when the bus reaches Gaozeng. Catching the final bus does not guarantee catching the train needed for your hotel. A route is only workable if all of its legs connect, including any later interchange.

This bus is not the same as the twenty-four-hour terminal shuttle. Similar airport buses can have different destinations, access conditions and operating hours. Before boarding, confirm “Gaozeng” rather than relying on the vehicle's general airport appearance.

## Intercity trains: a separate option, especially at T3

T3's railway station is Baiyun Airport East, written 白云机场东, on level B2 of the terminal transport centre. T2's intercity station is Baiyun Airport North, written 白云机场北. The intercity railway can be useful for destinations along its actual route, including connections around the wider Guangzhou region.

Do not confuse Baiyun Airport North on the intercity system with Airport North on the metro. The names refer to the same terminal area, but the services, gates, tickets and routes are different. At T3, following a sign for a train does not necessarily mean you have found the metro.

Look up the specific departure and the station you need through Guangdong Intercity or the railway booking information for your date. Check that the train stops at your intended station. An average interval or an example in an older article is not a reservation and does not confirm the next train's stopping pattern.

For a high-speed railway connection, verify the exact station name and the walk between the intercity and high-speed facilities. Similar place names around a large interchange should not be treated as one platform. Keep enough time for the onward railway's own boarding requirements rather than comparing only the train running times.

If you are staying near a useful intercity stop, this may save transfers. If the final station is far from your hotel, the shorter rail segment can be cancelled out by an awkward final leg. Compare the whole transfer, not the most attractive single number.

## Airport buses: choose the stop before the ticket

Airport buses serve different districts and destinations; there is no single airport bus that is equally convenient for every central hotel. At T2, the transport centre's western bus station is the relevant starting point for city and longer-distance coaches. At T3, follow the current airport-bus signs in the transport centre and check the destination at the sales or service point.

The official Baiyun Airport Express information is published under 白云机场空港快线. Before paying, establish the route, next departure, actual drop-off stop, operating period and how you will finish the journey. A bus described as serving Tianhe is not necessarily stopping beside your particular hotel.

Some services have night-specific operating periods. A daytime list of districts does not establish that all those routes continue through the night, and a night route should not be assumed to run all day. Ask about the departure you can actually board after collecting your luggage.

Buses can be comfortable when they avoid several rail changes and leave you close to the accommodation. They can be less attractive when a long wait is followed by another taxi journey. Compare the waiting and final leg as carefully as the advertised fare.

## Official taxi or ride-hailing: different pickup processes

Use the designated taxi rank for an ordinary taxi. For ride-hailing, place the order through the service and go to the pickup location selected in the app. A taxi queue and an app pickup area are not interchangeable. Do not assume that a driver can collect you from any convenient door.

At T2, the airline's published information identifies taxi pickup around arrivals doors 50 and 53\. At T3, pickup arrangements have changed during the terminal transition, so follow current airport signs and the location attached to your order rather than an old door number. The correct parking level can matter as much as the car park's name.

For an app ride, match the registration and vehicle details before getting in and send the exact pickup point if you need to contact the driver. Keep enough connectivity and battery for that exchange. If you cannot establish an order and meet its conditions, the official taxi rank is a separate practical option.

Ask about the applicable fare basis and possible additional road charges before relying on a rough estimate. A number for one Tianhe address is not a fixed price for the entire city. The total can depend on the destination, traffic, time and the selected service; this guide does not present an unverified citywide taxi quote.

For several travellers, compare vehicle capacity as well as cost. Four seats do not automatically mean room for four large suitcases. If booking a transfer in advance, specify the number of passengers and bags, the terminal, delay arrangements, meeting point and what the quoted total includes.

## Payment: network support is not a universal guarantee

Guangzhou Metro announced contactless bank-card travel across its stations in October 2025\. The published supported networks include UnionPay and overseas-issued Visa, Mastercard, American Express and JCB, with contactless capability required. The announcement also identifies certain domestically issued cards with RMB support.

That is useful for visitors, but it does not guarantee every card from every issuer will be accepted. Check your card's overseas use and have a practical backup. A supported card-network logo is different from confirmation that your specific bank account can complete a transaction.

Do not extend the metro announcement to every bus or intercity railway service. These are separate transport products. Check payment for the actual segment you are buying; a successful metro gate entry does not establish that the same method works everywhere else.

If payment fails, seek help before entering a paid area or boarding. Avoid making repeated assumptions while holding up a gate or leaving luggage unattended. Include the complete transfer and possible final taxi in your [travel budget](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-budget-for-a-trip-and-include-costs-you-might-forget/), rather than counting only the least expensive segment.

## Late arrivals: use the time you reach transport

The flight's landing time is not the time you will board a train or bus. Immigration where applicable, baggage reclaim, customs and the walk to the transport centre come first. A published last departure close to your landing time should be treated as uncertain, not as a dependable plan.

For T3, pay particular attention to the ordinary 22:40 last city-bound Gaozeng bus in the published timetable, then check the connecting metro. For both terminals, verify the last usable intercity or metro journey to your destination. Do not replace that check with a general claim that the airport is open all night.

Prepare a fallback before flying: official taxi, a confirmed car transfer or a suitable bus whose actual night departure is available. Tell your accommodation if arrival may be late and confirm how you will gain access. Our guide to [late-night arrival, transfers and check-in](https://roadme.io/blog/late-night-arrival-how-to-arrange-your-transfer-and-check-in/) covers that wider preparation.

> Leave the first day realistic: [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) can shape a personal trip plan around your interests instead of filling every available hour. In the app, it is easier to keep an arrival day lighter and make room for the discoveries you most want.

## Four situations that make the decision easier

**T2, daytime, one manageable suitcase.** Start by checking Metro Line 3 and the full connection to the hotel. If the final walk and interchanges are straightforward, there may be no reason to add a terminal transfer or a car journey.

**T3, daytime, hotel near an intercity stop.** Compare a specific intercity departure with the Gaozeng bus-plus-metro connection. Include waiting and the final walk. Choose the route that reaches your address most comfortably, not automatically the train with the shortest advertised running time.

**Late arrival or several large bags.** Compare the official taxi process and a confirmed app or prebooked car. Check capacity and the actual pickup point. A simpler door-to-door trip may be more useful than saving on the first segment and struggling with the rest.

**Wrong terminal or an onward flight.** Ask airport or airline staff before using a terminal shuttle. The official T2–T3 guidance describes the shuttle as intended for transfer passengers; do not treat it as an unrestricted way to reach the city. Changing terminals also does not establish permission to enter China or confirm an airline's baggage-transfer arrangements.

## Before leaving the arrivals area

Have the exact hotel address, terminal, next usable departure, required transfer, final stop and backup option clear. For a car, confirm the vehicle and pickup level; for rail, confirm the system and destination. Airport assistance can help if the signs and your saved instructions disagree.

The practical rule is simple: T2 offers the direct metro starting point; T3 requires a choice between intercity rail, a metro connection by bus and road transport. Once you plan from your actual terminal to your actual hotel, the transfer becomes much easier to judge.
