Assess an eco-friendly hotel through specific actions and evidence: what this property does, who has checked it and which period the information covers. Green styling, an “eco” label and a towel-reuse request do not by themselves establish the sustainability of the entire hotel.

Greenwashing creates an environmental image without sufficient support for the promise being made. Your task is to check that promise before choosing accommodation, rather than carry out an engineering audit or accuse a property based on one photograph.

## Define a stay that meets your needs

Record your essentials: budget, location, room access, sleep, meals and necessary facilities. Assess sustainability measures alongside them. A certificate does not automatically establish that your room category suits your needs or that every facility is included in the rate.

Compare properties using the same dates, party size and accommodation category. The guide to [choosing a neighbourhood to stay in](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-choose-a-neighbourhood-to-stay-in-an-unfamiliar-city/) helps assess the address. Consider actual journeys to your planned visits alongside the attractive setting.

> Try outlining city visits by day in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) around your dates, interests and pace. Use that plan to assess which neighbourhood fits an ordinary day of your trip.

Choose the sustainability questions that matter to you: resource use, waste, purchasing or local community relationships. Avoid reducing the assessment to a single feature, such as removing plastic straws or being located in woodland.

## Verify certification for this property

Ask for the programme name, issuing body, certificate number, validity period and assessed scope. Match the name and address to the hotel you intend to book. A document for another building, an individual product or a chain-wide programme should not automatically be treated as certification for every property.

Find confirmation through the programme or issuing body itself. Check for public criteria and independent assessment, what the assessment covers and how status is renewed. A logo on a booking page prompts further checking rather than completing it.

GSTC terminology separates three things: certification is third-party assessment of a business; accreditation concerns the body that certifies; recognition concerns a set of standards. GSTC membership does not mean a hotel is certified either. GSTC itself does not carry out hotel certification.

For a property claiming EU Ecolabel status, look for details in its official tourist accommodation catalogue or contact the programme's competent body. The European Commission explains that licence holders are responsible for registration and the list may not be exhaustive. If an entry is missing, ask for confirmation rather than immediately concluding the document is false.

Use current programme information. Green Key, for example, introduced new criteria from October 2026 with a transition for existing participants. The document's actual validity and standard version matter more than an older general article about labels. Other programmes have their own conditions.

## Match promises to actions you can understand

Sustainability extends beyond decorative greenery. GSTC covers management, social and economic impacts, cultural heritage and environmental impacts; its hotel requirements address areas including energy, water, emissions, waste and purchasing.

| Promise | Ask about |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------- |
| Saving water | Measures and use tracking |
| Reducing energy use | Equipment and results |
| Sorting waste | Collection and onward handling |
| Supporting local people | Specific purchases and projects |
| Being certified | Property, validity and scope |

This table is a questioning method, not a sustainability score. Sorting bins do not explain the waste's onward destination. A general claim about local produce does not identify which purchases it covers.

For a reduction claim, ask for the period, baseline and calculation method. A lower total with fewer guests is not the same as an equivalent reduction per guest night. Avoid comparing different measures as one number or treating a future target as an achieved result.

A linen-reuse option can be part of a substantive programme. Ask what the hotel does itself, how guest participation is monitored and how to obtain a replacement when needed. Lack of certification does not prove the absence of useful actions, but the claims still need specifics.

## Finish with clear answers before booking

Read recent accounts of practical arrangements, such as drinking-water availability, housekeeping, requests and room equipment. The guide to [reading hotel reviews beyond the overall score](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-read-hotel-reviews-and-find-what-matters-beyond-the-overall-score/) helps assess dates, room categories and recurring observations. Guest feedback does not replace certification or resource-use measurement.

You could ask: “Which sustainability programme applies to this property, and where can I verify its current certificate? Which water and waste measures operate now, and how do guests obtain drinking water or replacement towels?” This is a suggested enquiry, rather than a completed hotel investigation.

Save the replies and compare the full price, accommodation conditions and cancellation terms. An extra charge called “eco” does not itself explain how the money is used: ask about its conditions and purpose. An attractive image alone is a weak reason to pay more when an important promise remains unexplained.

> Save your city visits to favourites in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to compare them on your personal map with the accommodation address. Keep sustainability evidence and arrangements with the hotel separately.

A useful assessment gives you understandable actions, traceable confirmation of claimed status and suitable everyday conditions. If an important question remains unanswered, record that uncertainty and compare another offer.
