# What Is Duty Free, and When Are Purchases Actually Good Value?

Duty free is retail under specific duty and tax conditions. Certain charges are excluded from an eligible sale, but this does not guarantee the lowest price or exempt the purchase from the destination's import rules.

Evaluate an individual product: the same version and quantity, final payment amount, transport costs and any import charges. Making the comparison before reaching the airport reduces pressure before boarding.

## What the duty-free label means

It describes trading conditions, rather than a place outside national law. Eligibility depends on the route and local rules. For example, EU guidance describes duty- and tax-free shopping at airports and ports for travel to destinations outside the EU, including certain specially treated territories.

Not every shop beyond security sells every item duty free. Confirm the store, your route, the documents it requires and the conditions applying to the actual purchase.

A VAT refund on a purchase made in town is a separate procedure. A tax-free label alone does not explain whether charges are excluded at sale or what the buyer must do afterwards. Read the applicable process before paying.

## Compare like with like

Choose the product beforehand and record an available price from a reliable seller. Compare it with the particular airport shop. Match the model, fragrance concentration, volume, set contents and included accessories.

| Check | Compare |
| -------- | -------------------------------------- |
| Product | Same version and set contents |
| Quantity | Price for the same amount |
| Payment | Billing currency, conversion and fees |
| Total | Purchase, transport and import charges |

Illustrative prices only: a 100 ml bottle costs €70, while 50 ml of the same fragrance and concentration costs €40\. The smaller offer is equivalent to €80 per 100 ml. The larger bottle costs less per unit, but requires spending €70 rather than €40\. If the smaller quantity meets your needs, these are different purchasing decisions.

An advertised discount does not replace comparison with an alternative you can actually buy. Read promotion, return and preorder conditions. Ask the bank or seller about conversion and charges; a displayed price in one currency is not necessarily the final amount billed in another.

## A shop receipt does not replace import rules

Check whether the goods are allowed, your personal allowance and any declaration requirements before buying. Include other purchases and gifts too. Alcohol, tobacco and some other categories have separate conditions.

For example, when arriving in Great Britain — England, Wales or Scotland — from outside the UK, the ordinary allowance for other goods is **£390**. It is £270 for arrival by private plane or boat. Exceeding the allowance means tax and duty apply to the total value of goods in that category, not merely the excess. You cannot pool allowances with another person.

This example does not cover Northern Ireland or replace the separate product allowances. Official UK guidance expressly includes duty-free purchases in the applicable import rules. Goods for resale or business use do not qualify for a personal allowance.

Our guide to [customs declarations on arrival](https://roadme.io/blog/customs-declaration-how-to-know-what-to-declare-on-arrival/) separates permission, reporting and payment. Retain receipts and ask customs when you are unsure how the rules apply to your itinerary.

## Confirm carriage before paying

For liquids, check every onward screening point, especially on a connection. EU guidance allows duty-free liquids in cabin baggage when the goods and receipt remain inside the shop's sealed security bag. Keep it closed until your final destination. If security opens it, explain that you have a connecting flight so the goods can be resealed.

This example does not establish the rules at every airport outside the EU. An ordinary clear bag is different from the special security packaging. Ask the retailer about the arrangement and confirm it with the connecting airport.

Check how the airline counts the purchase towards cabin-bag numbers and weight. Security packaging does not provide impact protection; our guide to [packing fragile purchases and souvenirs](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-pack-fragile-items-and-souvenirs-for-a-flight/) covers that task.

> For purchases made in town, try freeing packing time by removing or replacing visits in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io). Check the complete bag before leaving for the airport.

A useful deal is a product you need, priced below a comparable available alternative after applicable costs, which you can legally import and transport. If boarding leaves no time to establish those conditions, passing on the purchase is a reasonable decision.
