Denver’s RTD fares are easier to choose when you separate ordinary city travel from the airport fare. A standard Day Pass and an Airport Day Pass have different coverage, while supported bank-card taps and MyRide can automatically cap eligible spending. The payment medium still matters.

The current mobile experience is also moving into RTD NextRide, so older instructions focused only on the standalone MyRide app need context. This guide explains tickets, validation and airport connections for a short visit, without prescribing a sightseeing route. Official prices and instructions were checked on 28 October 2026.

## Choose the right RTD fare for the day

RTD operates buses and rail across the Denver region. Its regular fare products distinguish a three-hour period, a standard service day and an airport service day. The cheapest-looking product is useful only if it includes the journeys you actually need.

> Use [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to prepare a complete personal Denver trip plan around your interests and pace. Working out the stay in the app is more convenient than gathering disconnected places: you can fit transport to the visits you want and allow time for airport arrival, breaks and the return journey.

| Product | Standard price | Main coverage |
| ----------------- | -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| 3-Hour Pass | $2.75 | Ordinary travel during its valid period |
| Standard Day Pass | $5.50 | Ordinary bus and rail for the service day, excluding airport travel |
| Airport Day Pass | $10 | Applicable system travel including the airport for the service day |
| Discount Day Pass | $2.70 | For eligible passengers, including airport coverage |

## Three hours: count paid periods, not vehicles

The ordinary 3-Hour Pass is valid for three hours after validation. With the appropriate payment medium, a linked bus and rail journey within the same local window does not automatically require a second fare. Keep the original ticket, card or device available.

At current standard prices, two independent three-hour fares equal a Standard Day Pass. A third independent paid period would exceed it. With eligible fare capping, the system can apply the appropriate day limit; otherwise choose the product you need before paying.

The airport is a separate fare level for standard-paying adults. The ordinary three-hour fare should not be treated as permission to ride all the way to or from Denver International Airport. Check the airport product even when the train looks like another RTD departure.

## Tap-n-Ride: bank cards can earn fare caps

RTD’s supported contactless bank-card and mobile-wallet payment is called Tap-n-Ride. Present the compatible card or device directly at a validator on boarding a bus or at a rail station. For ordinary eligible adult use, you do not need to preload a separate balance.

Unlike systems where direct bank payment only buys uncapped singles, RTD currently includes daily and monthly fare capping. The applicable Day Pass or Airport Day Pass level is reached using the same payment token. Do not transfer a rule remembered from another city without checking.

A physical bank card and the version inside a phone or watch are different payment methods for this purpose. Use one consistently for transfers and capping. Removing and re-adding a wallet card can create a new token, so avoid changing the setup during your travel day.

Each person needs their own card or device. One physical card is not a group ticket, even when several people share the same bank account. Plan a separate usable medium for each paying traveller.

Take the selected card out of a wallet containing several cards. Wait for the successful response instead of repeatedly presenting different options. Check international usability with your issuer and keep a workable alternative if a transaction is refused.

## Going to the airport? Select Airport before tapping

RTD says validators normally default to the Local fare level. The rail-platform validators and SkyRide service at Denver Airport are set to Airport. That means a traveller leaving the city for the airport must not simply assume the ordinary default is correct.

At a rail-platform validator, use the Select Fare button at the base to choose the appropriate airport level before paying. On a bus, ask the operator to change the fare level. Read the actual screen and wait for successful validation.

If you already tapped at the Local level, RTD says the applicable difference to the Airport fare can be charged. Ask for help completing the correct fare rather than treating the initial local tap as proof that the airport is covered.

Choose the appropriate product when buying a mobile or machine ticket as well. A valid Standard Day Pass still excludes airport travel. The word “day” describes time, while “airport” changes the coverage you are purchasing.

## What an Airport Day Pass includes

The published $10 Airport Day Pass includes applicable RTD bus and rail travel across the system for that service day, including travel to or from the airport. Arriving visitors can therefore continue on suitable local RTD services without automatically buying an additional Standard Day Pass.

This benefit belongs to the same valid service day. It does not create another free airport journey a week later or cover every mode of getting around the state. Your departure day may need a new product even if you bought an airport pass on arrival.

Likewise, an ordinary city day without airport travel may only need the standard product. Buying the airport level every day because you once arrived by plane adds coverage you might not use. Match the fare to that day’s actual journeys.

For eligible discount passengers, the published Discount Day Pass includes the airport without an added airport fare. Do not apply the standard adult airport calculation to someone whose verified discount product has different rights.

## A service day is not a rolling 24 hours

RTD day products run to the end of the service day rather than for 24 hours after any first use. Its operating guidance lists day-pass expiry at 2:59 a.m. the following morning, with the actual expiry printed or displayed on the product.

A late-night airport arrival therefore deserves particular attention. The remaining validity may be short; do not expect the pass to cover the next afternoon merely because fewer than 24 hours have passed. Check the current ticket’s date and time.

Fare capping also uses the RTD service day. Keep the same medium across eligible rides and examine the correct day’s history if a charge looks unexpected. A bank posting date is not always a simple count of individual boardings.

## MyRide is now part of RTD NextRide

RTD NextRide combines the agency’s planning and mobile ticketing functions. Existing MyRide users can sign in with their MyRide account credentials; RTD says account funds, available fare products and eligible discounts remain associated with the account.

The physical MyRide card continues to work. The standalone MyRide app also remains available during the transition, with advance notice promised before retirement. It would be misleading to say that every older card or app stopped working as soon as NextRide appeared.

For a new setup, use the current official app instructions. Distinguish an account, a stored balance, a barcode and a purchased ticket. Logging in or adding money does not mean that every possible airport journey is already validated.

MyRide capping follows individual payment tokens. The mobile barcode in NextRide and a physical MyRide card can accumulate separately even when linked to the same account. Do not divide the day between them and expect one combined cap.

Continue scanning or tapping when required after reaching a cap. The system still needs to register the journey and its fare level. An earned day product removes further eligible charges, not the need to validate.

## Mobile ticket, barcode or bank tap?

The similar phone gestures can represent different products. A MyRide barcode is scanned, a compatible bank card in a wallet is tapped, and a purchased mobile ticket has its own activation and display instructions. Follow the action for the product you actually selected.

Prepare the account, connection and battery before reaching the station. Do not activate a short-duration product while casually browsing hours before the journey. Check whether the ticket is merely stored or already running and available to show.

Keep the real ticket or payment medium accessible throughout the journey. A screenshot or bank notification should not replace the valid product expected by an inspector. A phone with no charge can remove your ability to present it at the point you need it.

RTD’s contactless instructions say the inspector’s handheld device verifies previous payment; it does not collect a missing fare. Boarding without a successful validation and expecting to pay during inspection is therefore the wrong procedure.

Our guide to [transport tickets, zones and validation abroad](https://roadme.io/blog/public-transport-abroad-tickets-zones-validation/) explains the difference between a payment tool and the travel rights it represents. In Denver, that distinction also prevents accidentally treating a local barcode or tap as an airport fare.

## Cash and ticket machines remain options

RTD lists rail-station vending machines, sales outlets and its mobile system as ways to buy day products. Buses also have an appropriate cash procedure. Bring exact fare where required and identify the product before paying.

When buying a day pass on a bus, tell the operator which fare product you need before the payment is processed. A cash single does not automatically become a capped day account. A printed pass should be kept for the full period and shown as instructed.

Check date, fare level and validity before leaving a machine. A paper airport pass for the wrong day is not made correct by a receipt showing that you paid. Ask for assistance if the issue occurs rather than boarding on an assumption.

## The A Line is a connection, not the whole airport journey

The A Line connects Denver Union Station with Denver Airport Station. RTD describes the train ride as approximately 37 minutes across 23 miles. This is time on the rail journey, not a guarantee of 37 minutes from an airport gate to your hotel.

The service opened in April 2016, making 2026 its tenth anniversary. It is commuter rail with features such as luggage racks, distinct from treating every Denver rail service as identical. Its value is a direct link between the airport station and the city’s interchange.

Add baggage collection, walking to the station, waiting, the connection at Union Station and the final walk to accommodation. For a departing flight, also allow the airport’s required check-in and security time. A train’s advertised journey duration is not an adequate flight buffer.

Check the actual schedule and service alerts for your date and direction. Early, late and disrupted services can differ from daytime patterns. Do not treat a remembered interval or a screenshot from last season as a promise of the next departure.

## Children and eligible discounts

RTD’s Zero Fare for Youth covers passengers aged 19 and under, including its airport services, with the required proof of eligibility. RTD describes the programme as permanent. Do not buy adult airport products for every family member before checking who needs one.

Discount categories include eligible seniors aged 65 and above and other qualifying passengers. Use the required documentation and the actual discount product. A low-income or disability programme’s requirements should not be assumed to apply automatically to every visitor.

Direct bank payment does not identify a new rider’s discount by itself. RTD says first-use cards or devices are charged the standard fare unless the proper discount has been enabled through its process. Account linking or customer support may be needed.

For an infrequent eligible visitor, RTD recommends considering an appropriate discount mobile ticket, machine ticket or cash fare rather than relying on immediate first-tap recognition. Choose the documented product before paying the ordinary airport rate.

## Exceptions to ordinary bus and rail payment

Tap-n-Ride is not available on FlexRide, Access-a-Ride or Access-on-Demand. RTD also says physical MyRide cards are not accepted on FlexRide, even though the appropriate day passes can be valid there. A pass’s coverage and the accepted way of presenting it are separate.

Specialised services have their own eligibility, booking or fare rules. Do not extend an ordinary day pass to paratransit simply because the provider is RTD. If your chosen connection uses one of these services, check the exact product before leaving the regular network.

## Allow time beyond the fare calculation

Choose connections around walking distance, weather, bags and the last return. Compare the whole journey using [our guide to total travel cost and time](https://roadme.io/blog/train-bus-or-plane-how-to-compare-total-cost-and-travel-time/). A small saving is rarely useful if it creates a difficult final walk or removes your flight buffer.

> [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) helps you prepare the complete personal trip plan with suitable places, walking pace and breaks. Coordinating the stay in the app is more effective than arranging isolated journeys: the transport supports your interests while leaving space for arrival and departure.

## Before your first RTD ride

- Choose ordinary, airport or an eligible discount fare.
- Check the actual service day and expiry.
- Keep one payment token for transfers and caps.
- Select Airport before an appropriate outbound airport tap.
- Validate successfully and keep the original medium available.
- Check the full airport connection and a practical alternative.

Denver’s useful choice is the right fare level on the right medium for the real day of travel. Once those details are clear, RTD can support a flexible visit without turning a simple city ticket into an assumed airport pass.
