The Corfu to Saranda ferry connects a Greek island with Albania, but the short sea crossing still involves an international border. Choose the vessel, locate the international passenger terminal and check both countries’ entry requirements before buying. There is also a clock change to understand: Corfu is one hour ahead of Saranda under the current time rules. A return departure from Albania must be read in Albanian local time.

Foot passengers can compare conventional ferries and fast services; drivers need a departure that explicitly accepts their vehicle. A fast ticket does not automatically include a car space. This guide explains the booking, port and timing decisions without treating a seasonal timetable as a guaranteed departure. Operator information was checked in October 2026; confirm your dated sailing, vessel and travel-document requirements before payment.

## Choose the right crossing before comparing fares

Finikas Lines and Ionian Seaways are among the operators on this route. Their booking methods, vessels and cancellation terms differ. Two listings headed “Corfu–Saranda” do not necessarily represent the same product or the same contract. Compare the direction, date and passenger details together, then check the return as a separate sailing.

| Your journey | Look for | Confirm before paying |
| ----------------------------- | ---------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Foot passenger with luggage | Passenger ferry or hydrofoil | Sailing duration, baggage and terminal entrance |
| Your own car | A vehicle-carrying departure | Car space, registration and vehicle documents |
| A hire car collected on Corfu | Permissions before tickets | Carrier, rental and insurance restrictions |
| A ferry before a flight | A connection with generous margins | Border checks, disembarkation and airport transfer |

Ionian Seaways gives indicative sailing times of 30–45 minutes for high-speed or hydrofoil services and 55–70 minutes for passenger or car ferries. Those are its sea-crossing estimates, not a promise that you can leave your hotel and reach Albania in half an hour. Finikas has different broad duration statements on its website, so the vessel and confirmation for your chosen sailing are more useful than a general headline.

Finikas lists Stavros, Kristi and Hariklia as passenger hydrofoils, while Marina and Kaliopi have passenger and vehicle capacity. Its Finikas Highspeed listing also includes car capacity. The useful distinction is therefore whether your actual departure accepts the vehicle, rather than assuming that every fast vessel is passenger-only or every boat called a ferry has car spaces available.

## Local time: why an arrival can look earlier than departure

Corfu follows Greek time and Saranda follows Albanian time. With the current clock arrangements, Corfu is one hour ahead. Ionian Seaways explicitly labels departures as local time. CFU identifies the Corfu column and SAR the Saranda column: adjacent departure times are not automatically the outward and return legs of one bookable journey.

For illustration only, suppose a boat leaves Corfu at 10:00 and sails for 30 minutes. The clock in Saranda will read 09:30 on arrival. In the other direction, a 16:00 departure from Saranda followed by a 30-minute crossing reaches Corfu at 17:30 Greek time. These are worked clock examples, not published services, and they exclude disembarkation and immigration.

- Write the port name and date beside every departure.
- Read a Saranda return in Albanian local time.
- If a seller uses a different display convention, resolve it before purchase.
- Do not confuse the clock difference with the elapsed sailing time.
- Check which time zone your phone is using before setting an alarm.

## Buying a ticket versus making a reservation

Start with your operator’s dated booking system. Enter the direction, passenger numbers and correct age categories, adding the car when needed. Check the operating carrier, issuing seller and change conditions. Keep the issued confirmation rather than relying on a successful-payment screen: it should identify the passengers and sailing and explain how to present the ticket.

Ionian Seaways distinguishes paid online tickets from reservations paid at a port office. A passenger holding the required printed paid ticket can go directly to the international terminal; a reservation awaiting payment needs an office visit first. The published pages contain differing office-payment deadlines for different booking methods, so use the instructions attached to yours and allow time for both the office and terminal.

Both operators’ direct-to-terminal instructions refer to a printed ticket. Follow your product’s presentation requirements instead of assuming any phone screenshot will be accepted. Keep an electronic backup as well. Children must be properly included in the reservation even where an age category travels without a fare; infant and child thresholds are operator-specific, so do not copy one company’s age bands into another booking.

## Corfu and Saranda ports: an agency is not the boarding entrance

On Corfu, you need the international passenger terminal at the New Port for Albania. Do not head to the nearest excursion boat on the waterfront. An agency address identifies the place to buy or resolve a ticket; it may not be the entrance to passport control. Ionian Seaways lists its Corfu office at 4 Ethnikis Antistaseos, and Finikas at number 1 on that street. Neither address should be treated as a promise to board outside the office door.

In Saranda, the operators list port offices around Rruga Mitat Hoxha. Distinguish the international passenger entrance, the agency and the public waterfront. After arrival, allow for border procedures and luggage collection before meeting a driver outside. A boat reaching the port entrance is not the same event as a passenger being free to leave the terminal.

If you use local buses to reach the port, our guide to [public transport tickets and validation abroad](https://roadme.io/blog/public-transport-abroad-tickets-zones-validation/) helps with that separate part of the journey. The ferry itself has a different process: a paid ticket does not remove the need for travel documents or the required early arrival at the international terminal.

## How early to arrive

Ionian Seaways asks passengers to be at the international terminal at least one hour before departure and says boarding closes 30 minutes before sailing. Drivers also need at least an hour for customs procedures. If you must collect or pay for a ticket at the agency, arrange that before the terminal deadline rather than trying to fit both jobs into the final few minutes.

Finikas has inconsistent wording across its published sections: the general conditions say at least an hour for all passengers, while its online-paid boarding section mentions 40 minutes for foot passengers and an hour for vehicles. Plan for at least an hour at the terminal and follow any stricter instruction on your confirmation. A shorter general statement is a poor basis for arriving late when documents or queues still need attention.

Count that margin from the time you are at the correct terminal with ready documents, not from leaving your accommodation. Airport baggage reclaim, the transfer, finding an office and reaching border control are additional stages. If someone needs assistance, contact the company before booking to confirm the arrangements rather than assuming every vessel and boarding situation has the same facilities.

## Documents: check Albania and the return to Greece separately

This journey crosses the external Schengen border. A same-day visit still requires the relevant travel documents, and a ferry booking does not establish immigration eligibility. Nationality, passport type, visa and residence status matter independently of the language in which you bought the ticket. A guide written for one nationality cannot safely be applied to every international traveller.

The carriers describe a valid passport or accepted national identity card for EU citizens. That does not mean any country’s domestic identity document is sufficient. For another nationality or a special travel document, confirm acceptance with the relevant authorities. Document validity requirements also apply to short visits; spending only a few hours ashore does not bypass them.

Albania’s foreign ministry lists several visa-exemption grounds, including an eligible valid multiple-entry Schengen visa already used in a Schengen country or an eligible valid Schengen residence permit. Additional conditions, exclusions and remaining-validity requirements apply. Check the current official rule for the basis you intend to use rather than assuming every European visa provides admission to Albania.

Returning to Corfu is a second decision. A single-entry Schengen visa permits one entry; leaving for Albania does not create another. Where a visa is required, check your permitted entries, validity and remaining stay entitlement before buying. Being eligible to enter Albania does not establish your right to re-enter Greece, and a multiple-entry document does not remove other border requirements.

Children need their own required travel documents. Operators also publish consent requirements for children travelling with one parent or another adult. Establish the form, authentication and translation needed for your circumstances in advance. Do not assume a birth certificate, an informal note or a message on a phone will replace the authorisation the carrier or border authority requires.

## Taking a car: the vessel is only one part of permission

A car requires a booked vehicle place as well as the appropriate passenger tickets. Enter the correct category and registration, and disclose dimensions or equipment that affect carriage when required. Confirm vehicle ownership or authority to use it, cross-border insurance and the port process. A car option shown on one departure does not mean the neighbouring departure can also accept it.

Ionian Seaways explicitly prohibits transporting rental cars from Corfu to Albania on its timetable page. A rental company’s permission would not override that carrier restriction. With another operator, do not infer permission merely because the same prohibition is absent from a summary: you still need the carrier’s acceptance, rental permission for the ferry and border crossing, and appropriate insurance.

## Luggage and the crossing itself

The published terms for both operators include a free luggage allowance of up to 25 kg and 0.25 cubic metres per passenger. Confirm unusual, bulky or specialist equipment separately: satisfying the weight limit does not establish that every object can travel. Bags go in designated areas, and belongings left in a vehicle will not be accessible when the garage is closed during the voyage.

Keep border documents, necessary medication, your phone and essential items for children with you. For pets, obtain confirmation for the actual vessel and carry the original required veterinary documents. A general deck-pet provision is not a promise of a private pet cabin or permission to enter every passenger interior.

## Return tickets and onward flights

Check the return while choosing the outward crossing: date, Albanian departure time and availability for all passengers. Summer frequencies do not describe a winter travel day. Even where an operator publishes year-round service, the number of departures and useful connections can vary considerably. A last departure shown on a general timetable is not a seat reservation.

> Use [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to shape a personal trip plan around the places and experiences that interest you in supported destinations. Planning in the app makes it easier to keep an enjoyable pace without filling every gap between transfers.

When comparing the total, include transfers, possible accommodation and the conditions of separate reservations. Our [trip-budget guide to easily overlooked costs](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-budget-for-a-trip-and-include-costs-you-might-forget/) explains that broader calculation. A cheap sea ticket can become an expensive choice when its arrival is being treated as a guarantee for another booking that the ferry operator does not control.

## If a sailing changes or is cancelled

Provide a working mobile number and email, and check messages before leaving for the port. Both companies reserve the possibility of timetable changes or vessel substitution. A replacement can change practical arrangements, especially for a vehicle or requested assistance, so read the revised instructions instead of relying only on the original screenshot.

Voluntary refund conditions differ between companies. Contact the issuing seller and use your ticket’s terms rather than borrowing the other operator’s deadline. A no-show is not an ordinary cancellation. For a sailing prohibited because of weather or port-authority orders, the operators describe changing the ticket or refunding the fare; that does not promise payment for a separately booked flight or hotel.

## Your final check before leaving for the port

1. Confirm the direction, date, passengers and vessel on the issued booking.
2. Label each departure by its port and local time.
3. Verify admission to Albania and the right to return to Greece separately.
4. Prepare the required printed ticket and original travel documents.
5. Save the agency address and international-terminal entrance separately.
6. Allow the full required terminal margin plus the journey to reach it.
7. For a vehicle, resolve the carrier, border, rental and insurance conditions.
8. Check the return and onward connection without relying on an unreserved last boat.

The most common planning trap is to equate a short crossing with a simple boarding process. Once the documents, terminal and two local clocks are clear, you can compare the real journey rather than just the number of minutes spent at sea.
