Start with the bags included in your booking, choose items for your actual plans, then weigh everything together with the bags. Reduce duplicates, unnecessary shoes, bulky toiletries and devices without a clear purpose. Compact packing can reduce volume, but it does not reduce weight.

Carry-on-only travel works when the belongings you need fit the permitted bags and your destination supports a smaller kit, for example through laundry and suitable accommodation supplies. Trip length alone is a poor guide: a week across different climates may require more than a longer stay with regular washing.

## Identify the allowance you actually bought

A bag sold as “cabin size” is not automatically suitable for your flight. Check your carrier’s rules and the details of your booking.

Record:

- how many bags are included;
- the dimensions for each, including relevant protruding parts;
- weight limits and whether they apply to the bags together;
- whether the bag must fit under the seat or in an overhead locker;
- any booking requirement for a larger cabin bag;
- the conditions on connecting and return flights.

An underseat personal item and an overhead carry-on may have different booking conditions. For example, easyJet includes one small underseat bag; a larger cabin bag requires the appropriate booking entitlement. [easyJet cabin bag rules](https://www.easyjet.com/en/help/baggage/cabin-bags?ref=roadme.io).

Do not assume a laptop bag or waist pack is always an extra free item. AirAsia Philippines describes a standard 7 kg allowance covering a cabin bag and a personal item together. Moving belongings between them does not reduce that combined weight. [AirAsia Philippines guidance](https://newsroom.airasia.com/stories/2026/4/22/airasia-philippines-slashes-group-seating-costs-by-50-and-urges-pre-booked-baggage-to-save-this-summer?ref=roadme.io).

These are examples of different approaches. Confirm the rules for your operating carrier, flight and purchased extras.

## Pack for activities before filling the bag

Review the weather, planned activities, dress requirements and days until laundry. Confirm what your accommodation supplies. Suitable towels, a hairdryer or shower products can leave your list when their availability is established.

Sort belongings into three groups:

1. **Daily or essential:** documents, required medication, payment methods, phone, charging equipment and basic clothing.
2. **Activity-specific:** swimming gear, work equipment or particular footwear.
3. **No defined use yet:** duplicate accessories, similar outfits and speculative gadgets.

Start reducing the third group. For the second, confirm that the activity is part of the itinerary and consider whether appropriate equipment is available locally.

> For city visits, you can first build a day-by-day plan in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) around your interests and pace. Review the chosen activities before deciding which extra items earn a place in the bag.

## Count the empty bag

Your bag uses part of the weight allowance. A lighter model leaves more allowance for the contents, but comfort and protection matter too.

Compare bags you already own: weigh them empty, measure them, and check straps, handles and zips. A small weight difference does not necessarily justify buying another bag.

Capacity in litres does not establish airline compliance. Filled outside pockets can increase a backpack’s depth, while a suitcase’s wheels and handles need to be counted according to the carrier’s method.

Reduce the contents before testing the packed bag. A large bag that is half full may still exceed the size limit.

## Build a small wardrobe around laundry

Choose clothes that work together and cover several situations on a normal city holiday. One suitable warmer layer can be more useful than several outfits intended for individual evenings.

This illustrative seven-day list assumes moderate weather, no special events, laundry on day four and clothes dry by the following day. It includes what you wear during travel:

- 4–5 tops.
- 2 pairs of trousers, skirts or other bottoms.
- 5 sets of underwear and 5 pairs of socks if worn daily.
- 1 warmer layer.
- Rain protection where needed.
- Sleepwear.
- Your main walking shoes, with another pair only if needed.

Adjust this for activity, washing access and drying time. The list is a starting point, not a required minimum.

Review footwear carefully because it takes both weight and space. If one familiar pair suits most of the itinerary, shoes intended only for a photograph may be unnecessary.

Wear comfortable clothes suited to the journey’s temperature. Avoid building your weight calculation around carrying several spare layers on your body.

## Trim toiletries and electronics

Take useful quantities in suitable containers. A travel bottle does not need to be full for a short trip. Retain required labelling and check that the product is suitable for the container.

Do not move medication into unlabelled containers simply to save space without checking the requirements and storage conditions. Necessary medicines and medical supplies should not be your first category to cut.

Give each device a task: work, photography, reading or communication. If your phone covers your needs, leave redundant devices behind. If a laptop is essential for work, include its charger, cables and protective equipment in the calculation. The [workation planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/workation-planning-how-to-combine-remote-work-and-travel/) covers the wider working arrangement.

One charger can replace several only when compatibility and sufficient power are confirmed. Cases and pouches also contribute to weight.

> For city walks, you can download your destination in [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) while connected to the internet, then use its maps and navigation offline. That lets you prepare the city map on the phone you are already taking.

## Use a weight budget

Weighing categories shows where reductions are worthwhile. This hypothetical calculation uses a 7 kg limit to demonstrate the method. The weights are illustrative, not measurements of a tested kit or an allowance applying to every flight.

| Category                                          | Example weight |
| ------------------------------------------------- | -------------- |
| Bag                                               | 0.80 kg        |
| Packed clothes and shoes                          | 2.50 kg        |
| Toiletries                                        | 0.45 kg        |
| Electronics, chargers and cases                   | 1.35 kg        |
| Documents, wallet and essential personal supplies | 0.20 kg |
| Other permitted items                             | 0.40 kg        |
| **Total**                                         | **5.70 kg**    |
| **Remaining within the example limit** | **1.30 kg** |

If two bags share a combined allowance, include both bags and all their contents. Add items packed on departure morning, such as your charger, toiletries and snacks.

Do not automatically fill the remaining allowance. You may need it for purchases or changes to the kit. Some margin also avoids relying on an exact match between home and airport scales.

If you are over the limit, identify heavy optional items first. Removing unnecessary footwear can achieve more than rearranging several small objects.

## Pack compactly while keeping essentials accessible

Fold or roll clothing to suit the fabric and bag shape. No single method produces the same result for every item.

Organisers can separate contents but add their own weight. Compression bags reduce the space occupied by clothing while leaving its mass unchanged.

Keep documents, medication, electronics and liquids that may need inspection accessible. Leave enough room to close the bag again after security.

Check liquid rules at every airport on the route. UK guidance explains that rules depend on the airport and that, where a 100 ml limit applies, the container’s capacity counts even when it is only partly full. [GOV.UK liquid guidance](https://www.gov.uk/hand-luggage-restrictions/liquids?ref=roadme.io).

For essential liquid medicines and other special categories, check applicable exemptions and supporting documentation separately.

## Prepare for a possible gate check

A compliant cabin bag may sometimes be placed in the hold. easyJet, for example, describes this possibility when overhead space is unavailable for certain large-bag entitlements. Keep important belongings accessible for that situation. [easyJet conditions](https://www.easyjet.com/en/help/baggage/cabin-bags?ref=roadme.io).

If the bag is taken, ask what you need to remove and where you will collect it. Keep documents, money, required medication and valuable devices with you within the permitted conditions.

Under FAA rules, spare lithium batteries and power banks must be removed from a gate-checked bag and kept in the cabin, with battery terminals protected against short circuits. Check your carrier’s restrictions for the actual flight too. [FAA lithium battery guidance](https://www.faa.gov/hazmat/packsafe/lithium-batteries?ref=roadme.io).

## Know when checked baggage is the better fit

After removing optional items, your necessary kit may still exceed the permitted weight, dimensions or cabin-item rules. Compare a larger cabin allowance, checked baggage and changes to the kit.

Include laundry, rental and local purchase costs. Travelling without checked baggage makes sense when the overall cost and comfort suit the trip.

Before departure, confirm:

- Bag count matches the booking.
- Dimensions have been checked after packing.
- Weight includes all journey items.
- Connecting and return flights have been considered.
- Liquids, medication and batteries have been checked separately.
- Important items can be removed quickly.
- There is room and a weight allowance for planned purchases.

For the wider arrangements, use the [first independent trip planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-plan-your-first-independent-trip-from-idea-to-departure/). Your carry-on kit is ready when it meets the applicable conditions and remains practical for the activities you have planned.
