For a direct journey in Budapest, an ordinary single ticket costs 500 HUF. If you need to change between surface services, compare the mobile 30-minute ticket at 600 HUF or the 90-minute ticket at 850 HUF. For repeated journeys, the 24-hour travelcard costs 2,750 HUF and the 72-hour version 5,750 HUF. These products solve different problems; the cheapest-looking single fare is not always the correct ticket.

BudapestGO is BKK's app for public transport planning and ticket purchase. Buying there does not remove the need to follow the product's validation and display instructions. Airport Express 100E has a separate fare and is not included in an ordinary 24- or 72-hour travelcard. Prices and conditions below were checked on 27 October 2026.

## Choose the ticket for the journey, not only the length of the stay

> Let [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) develop a personal travel plan around your interests and pace. Organising the visit in the app makes it easier to give important discoveries enough time, then choose transport that supports the way you want to explore.

Begin with the accommodation address and a few real journeys you expect to make. A direct metro trip, a bus-to-tram connection and several trips across a day should not be treated as the same purchase. First identify the journey type, then compare prices.

For a short visit, three decisions usually cover most needs: whether you need transfers, how often you expect to travel, and whether you can reliably use a phone ticket. Keep the airport exception separate. A city ticket can be correct for every ordinary journey and still be wrong for 100E.

| Fare product | Price | Useful for | Main condition |
| -------------------- | --------- | -------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------- |
| Single ticket | 500 HUF | One uninterrupted journey | No general surface-service transfers |
| Block of ten singles | 4,500 HUF | Several ordinary single journeys | Each remains a single ticket |
| 30-minute ticket | 600 HUF | Connections within a short time window | Mobile product; validate transfers |
| 90-minute ticket | 850 HUF | A longer transfer window | Mobile product; final boarding before expiry |
| 24-hour travelcard | 2,750 HUF | Repeated ordinary journeys | Selected start date and time; excludes 100E |
| 72-hour travelcard | 5,750 HUF | Several busy transport days | Selected start date and time; excludes 100E |

The table covers standard adult products, not every concession or special service. The block of ten does not turn into a ten-ride transfer pass. Divide the number of useful journeys among the people travelling, but keep each passenger's ticket requirements separate.

## Ordinary single tickets: the metro exception matters

A single ticket is for one uninterrupted journey, generally on one line. A normal change from a bus to a tram requires another suitable ticket. Do not import a different city's rule that every change is included as long as you keep moving toward the same destination.

The metro network has an important exception: you may change between metro lines during a continuous journey without leaving the paid area. Going out to visit a place or returning in the opposite direction is not part of that same single-ticket journey.

For example, a continuous M2-to-M3 metro connection is different from leaving a tram and boarding a bus. You do not need to memorise every stop to make the distinction. Look at the modes in the proposed connection and decide whether the ordinary single covers the whole journey.

A block of ten can reduce the cost of several singles, but it keeps those rules. It is worth considering when the journeys genuinely suit singles. It is less useful if most of your movements need surface transfers and a time-based product would cover them more naturally.

On paper, validate the appropriate ticket before the journey: at the metro entrance before the boundary, or immediately after boarding a surface vehicle before departure. Keep the ticket until the trip is complete. Possessing an unused ticket is different from travelling with a validated one.

## Thirty or ninety minutes: a window for transfers

The mobile time-based tickets allow repeated transfers within their validity window, including changes between different ordinary BKK services. They can also cover return movements within the applicable conditions. Their clock starts with the first validation, not simply when the purchase is completed.

For 30 minutes, the last transfer must be made before the window expires; BKK describes this as 29 minutes and 59 seconds. The 90-minute equivalent is 89 minutes and 59 seconds. Do not plan to board exactly at the expiry and assume a rounded minute gives extra time.

If you boarded the final vehicle within the permitted period, you may finish that journey on it after the window ends. That does not create a right to make another transfer after expiry. Leaving the vehicle ends the useful extension for that final part.

Consider a hypothetical first validation at 10:00\. A final boarding at 10:25 can fit a 30-minute ticket even if that vehicle reaches the destination later than 10:30\. A new boarding at 10:35 does not fit that original window. These times explain the rule; they are not a promise about any actual Budapest connection.

Scan again when transferring to another surface line or otherwise beginning the required new boarding. Internal transfers between metro lines do not require revalidation. A further scan records use under the existing clock; it does not restart the half-hour or ninety minutes.

Choose the longer window when the actual connection needs it, rather than trying to make the shorter product work on a fragile assumption about waiting. The difference between the products should be compared with the journey you intend, not with a theoretical fastest trip.

## Twenty-four or seventy-two hours: when repeated travel is easier

Daily travelcards allow repeated covered journeys from their specified starting date and time. The 24-hour card is a rolling 24-hour product, and the 72-hour card runs for 72 hours. They are not simply tickets for one or three calendar dates ending at midnight.

Start the period around the first journey you need. A mid-afternoon arrival and departure early the next afternoon may fit a single 24-hour window. Conversely, three hotel nights can create a stay longer than 72 hours, depending on arrival and departure times.

For a simple comparison, six ordinary singles cost 3,000 HUF, more than the 2,750 HUF day travelcard. But that does not mean everyone needs six trips to consider a travelcard: transfers, the use of a block of ten and the convenience of changing plans alter the comparison.

Two 24-hour cards total 5,500 HUF, slightly below the 5,750 HUF 72-hour card. Three total 8,250 HUF, well above it. Therefore, compare the actual first and last journeys instead of automatically buying 72 hours because the accommodation description says “three-day stay”.

If you mostly walk and only need one outward and one return journey, a travelcard may buy convenience rather than an essential saving. That can still be a reasonable choice. Make it deliberately, without adding unnecessary rides simply to justify a pass.

For a longer stay, investigate the current longer-duration passes rather than repeatedly adding day travelcards. Check their identity and validity conditions as a separate product. A monthly pass is not automatically the best choice just because it exists.

## BudapestGO: purchase, validity and boarding display are different

Install and set up the app before your first necessary journey. Check that the correct ticket appears after payment and that you can access it with your own account. A bank notification or order confirmation is not the same as the ticket you will show.

For mobile 24- and 72-hour travelcards, BKK requires an active internet connection and states that use can begin at the earliest two minutes after a successful purchase. That is a reason to buy in advance, not while a vehicle is already closing its doors.

The mobile travelcard is linked to the original identification document entered when buying it and is not transferable. Carry that document, not merely an image of it. Check the details before payment rather than hoping to correct a mismatch during an inspection.

At a metro entrance or front-door boarding, follow the travelcard's scanning or “Boarding” instructions and show the animated graphic. This display step does not restart a 24-hour clock. If inspection staff ask, open the ticket details and show the relevant code.

For a single or time-based ticket, complete the appropriate validation before boarding. QR scanning and the supported NFC sticker are ways of using your ticket; they are not permission to present any bankcard to any sticker. A screenshot of an old animation is not the current ticket display.

If buying for someone else, use the app's intended companion-purchase process and check whose account receives the product. Decide how the ticket will be shown if your group separates. One phone with an order confirmation does not by itself establish coverage for every companion.

## Paper travelcards are not paper single tickets

A paper 24- or 72-hour travelcard does not need punching after purchase: its start and end are already specified. Do not confuse this with an ordinary paper single, which needs the required validation. Read the product, not just the fact that it is printed.

If you prefer to avoid phone dependence, compare a paper travelcard with mobile options before setting off. Check its dates when buying it and keep it available for inspection. Do not assume the cashier or machine has guessed when your sightseeing will begin.

Official ticket machines and customer centres are alternatives to the app. Choose a sales channel you can use, allow time for purchase and confirm the payment method available there. A planned transport connection is only useful if you can obtain a valid ticket before starting it.

For broader explanations, our guide to [public transport abroad, tickets, zones and validation](https://roadme.io/blog/public-transport-abroad-tickets-zones-validation/) separates these concepts. Budapest's useful distinction is especially clear: the single needs validation, while the dated paper travelcard already states its period.

## Airport Express 100E: the exception to the ordinary card

100E requires its specific airport ticket, currently 2,500 HUF for the standard single journey, or an eligible airport add-on. Ordinary 24- and 72-hour travelcards do not cover the express. Do not assume that a bus belongs to the day-card network just because it carries a BKK number.

The 1,000 HUF add-on is available in BudapestGO for holders of qualifying Budapest passes, excluding the 15-day pass, or qualifying Pest County and Hungary passes. An ordinary 24- or 72-hour travelcard is not one of those passes. Confirm the exact base product before selecting the cheaper add-on.

Bus 200E is an ordinary-fare service under its relevant conditions, while the 100E airport ticket is not a general ticket for 200E and the rest of the network. This is a ticket distinction, not a recommendation for a particular airport transfer or a guarantee about a connection time.

For airport boarding, follow the instructions for the product you bought: the mobile airport ticket is validated before boarding, while the paper version follows the boarding staff's procedure. If choosing Pay&GO, use the actual equipped payment terminal and the conditions of that service.

## Coverage and special services: check the actual boundary

Ordinary city products have an administrative Budapest boundary. A suburban HÉV journey continuing beyond it can require additional coverage, even though its first section looks like familiar city transport. Check your accommodation address and the whole intended journey.

Do not assume that every train, boat, tourist vehicle, chairlift or funicular is included. Travelcards and singles can also differ in their rail coverage. Confirm the fare product against the service instead of using a blanket phrase such as “all transport”.

Pay&GO is a separate purchase-and-validation system at designated equipment. It should not be confused with scanning an existing BudapestGO ticket. Availability of a terminal on one service does not prove that the same bankcard method works throughout every tram and bus.

> Keep the visit personal with [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io): the app can work out the whole travel plan around your interests and pace. It is more convenient to organise meaningful discoveries first and let the necessary journeys follow.

## A simple choice before leaving the accommodation

**One direct journey:** compare a single. **A journey with ordinary surface transfers:** consider 30 or 90 minutes and allow a realistic transfer window. **Several journeys across the day:** compare 24 hours. **Repeated travel across three full days:** include 72 hours in the calculation.

Check the passenger, start, expiry, boundary and boarding method. For phone tickets, check connection, battery and access before reaching the vehicle. For 100E, verify its separate fare rather than relying on an ordinary travelcard.
