Bayern-Ticket is a regional day ticket for Bavaria that can cover a fixed group of up to five fare-paying passengers. Its main advantages are shared pricing and unlimited eligible journeys during the stated period. It is not valid on every train, and on an ordinary weekday it starts at 09:00 rather than at the beginning of the morning.

Before buying, settle three questions: who is travelling, whether the actual trains are regional, and whether every covered journey fits the ticket's hours. Salzburg Hbf is within the stated extension, but Salzburg city buses are not included.

## Choose the shared day before choosing the ticket

This product is useful for a group making a substantial regional journey and returning together, possibly using local transport along the way. It can be less attractive for one short ride or a day spent entirely inside a single urban fare area. Compare the transport you really need, not the largest territory advertised.

> Try [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to work out a complete personal trip around your interests and preferred pace. In the app, it is more convenient to plan the visits and time available first, then choose a transport ticket that supports the whole day.

Bavaria is a German federal state, not a synonym for the Munich transport network. That difference explains both the ticket's usefulness and its limits: it can join several regional journeys, while a local group day ticket may be enough for a narrower plan.

## Current group prices in second class

| Fare-paying passengers | Day ticket, second class | How the total is built |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------ | ------------------------------------- |
| 1 | €34 | Base price |
| 2 | €44 | Base plus one additional passenger |
| 3 | €54 | Base plus two additional passengers |
| 4 | €64 | Base plus three additional passengers |
| 5 | €74 | Base plus four additional passengers |

These DB online and ticket-machine prices were checked on 28 October 2026 and agree with the BRB operator's table. Each additional fare-paying passenger after the first adds €10, up to five in total. DB sales points with personal advice add €2 to the ticket price.

The amount covers the whole group. Divide it by those actually sharing the cost; do not count a child travelling free as another paid adult.

## Weekdays: 09:00 until 03:00 the following day

On an ordinary Monday to Friday, the day ticket is valid from 09:00 on the chosen date until 03:00 the next day. Buying at 08:00 does not bring the start forward. First using it at noon does not postpone the expiry to noon tomorrow.

For an early departure, either choose a later eligible service or obtain suitable separate coverage for the travel before the pass becomes valid. Check the exact combination before boarding; do not assume that remaining on the same train at 09:00 automatically fixes an uncovered earlier section.

A simple planning test is to place the first covered departure and the final covered arrival inside the validity window. Leave a practical margin on the return. A ticket ending at 03:00 does not guarantee that a useful train or bus runs at that hour.

## Weekends and the specified holiday exceptions

On Saturdays, Sundays and the relevant public holidays, including Assumption Day, the day ticket starts at 00:00 and ends at 03:00 the following day. The same longer window applies on 24 and 31 December. Check the actual travel date rather than assuming every school holiday changes the rule.

A Saturday ticket can therefore cover eligible early-morning travel on Saturday. It is still a ticket for one selected validity day, not a rolling twenty-four-hour product activated by the first journey. A late start leaves fewer useful hours.

Around midnight, check the ticket date and time together: the first hours after midnight may still be covered by the previous day’s ticket.

## What transport is included?

Coverage includes local and regional trains operated by participating railway companies within the validity area, including RE and RB services and regional trains of operators other than DB. It also includes transport-association services such as S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses, and almost all scheduled buses in Bavaria.

The words “almost all” matter. Special buses, tourist services or an operator's excluded routes should not be treated as included simply because they run inside Bavaria. For an essential bus connection, check its specific acceptance before relying on the group ticket.

Attraction admission is separate unless expressly included. Reaching a castle’s visitor centre does not give you an entry reservation.

## ICE and IC are outside the ordinary ticket

Bayern-Ticket does not cover long-distance ICE or IC trains. A journey planner may offer one of them because it is quicker, even when a regional alternative exists. A short distance or a journey wholly inside Bavaria does not turn a long-distance service into an eligible regional train.

Use the local-transport selection, often labelled “Nur Nahverkehr”, when searching, then inspect every leg. Confirm the train category and whether the whole connection remains in the validity area. The fastest result is not necessarily the correct result for this product.

If you deliberately choose an excluded train, obtain the appropriate ticket for that service. Do not expect the conductor to convert a regional group allowance into a free upgrade. The same caution applies when a suggested connection mixes regional and long-distance legs.

## Salzburg and the boundary beyond Bavaria

The stated coverage extends beyond the state on selected routes, including to Salzburg Hbf and Kufstein, as well as named German boundary destinations such as Ulm Hbf and Sonneberg. These are defined extensions, not permission to travel anywhere in Austria or every neighbouring German state.

For Salzburg, use an eligible regional connection and check the actual destination. The pass covering the rail journey to Salzburg Hbf does not include the city's buses. Plan a separate local ticket or a suitable walk for that part of the visit.

A train continuing beyond an included boundary does not make its later section free. Check the complete journey, especially on the way back when the planner may suggest a different operator or category. The geographical exception and the regional-train requirement apply together.

## The group is fixed when you buy

The number and identities of the fare-paying travellers are determined at purchase. A companion can join the journey at a later station, but you cannot replace that person with somebody else for the return. It is a named shared ticket, not five interchangeable places.

First and last names of the fare-paying passengers must be entered as required by the ticket format. For an online ticket, enter them during booking. For a ticket with writable fields, complete the appropriate fields; someone joining en route must add their name immediately after boarding.

Carry valid identification because inspectors can check that the names correspond to the people travelling. Do not buy an already used ticket from a stranger or give yours away after finishing early. The operator prohibits passing on a used ticket, even if time remains.

## The main passenger on a digital group ticket

For a multi-person online or mobile ticket, DB requires a main passenger to be identified. That person must travel for the entire journey. Choose someone whose plans match the group's shared travel, not someone who intends to leave halfway through.

Before buying, ask whether everyone will return together and whether somebody needs to depart independently. A shared ticket is awkward when people split into separate trips. Compare separate tickets or different groups for the portions that genuinely diverge.

A photograph sent to another phone does not create a second independent group ticket. Keep the actual travel document accessible with the person responsible for it. Organise the party around one valid shared journey rather than assuming a single purchase permits simultaneous separate travel.

## Children: count ages before counting paid places

Children aged five and under travel free and are not counted in the number of passengers for this ticket. Up to three children aged six to fourteen can also travel free with a Länder-Ticket, whether or not they are the adults' own children.

For example, two fare-paying adults with two children aged eight and twelve use the two-person price, provided the ticket's other conditions are satisfied. Those children do not each require another adult-priced place merely because they occupy a seat.

A fourth child in that age band is outside the allowance of three free children. Check the correct passenger count rather than extending the free allowance indefinitely. BRB explicitly notes that additional children count as full passengers for this offer.

## Dogs and bicycles have different rules

A small dog up to the size of a domestic cat can travel free in a suitable carrier. A larger dog counts as a fare-paying passenger. When booking a paid dog, the operator instructs travellers to enter the German word “Hund” instead of a passenger's name.

The paid dog uses one of the group’s places. Also follow the operator’s rules for handling the animal.

A normal bicycle is not automatically included. A valid bicycle ticket is generally needed, subject to specific local exceptions. A folded bicycle properly packed to fit in the luggage rack can be treated as hand luggage under the stated exception; do not apply that to an unfolded full-size cycle.

## Where to buy and what to check before payment

DB offers the ticket online, through its app and at ticket machines; BRB also lists its own sales channels. Choose the exact product, date, class and party. Check the final ticket summary rather than relying on the price shown at the beginning of a search.

If Bayern-Ticket is missing from an ordinary connection search, that alone does not prove it is invalid. DB explains that the result can depend on a cheaper fare, a connection within one transport association, an excluded long-distance train or a departure before the ticket starts.

Find the named product and compare it with the actual journey. Do not buy a different Länder-Ticket merely because its name sounds similar. Payment methods can depend on the sales channel and your card issuer; confirm that the payment succeeded and that an actual ticket was issued.

## First class and Bayern-Ticket Nacht

First class is a separate version with its own group prices. A second-class ticket does not permit sitting in first class when the rest of the train is crowded. Choose the class that every intended train and every traveller can use.

Bayern-Ticket Nacht is another product, starting at 18:00\. Its ordinary Sunday-to-Thursday window ends at 06:00 the next morning; Friday and Saturday nights end at 07:00, with further specified holiday exceptions. Check the chosen date if the last hour matters.

The night version does not cover a daytime outward journey simply because the return is late. Compare the whole travel period before choosing it. “Nacht” also describes the ticket's hours, not permission to use a long-distance sleeper or any train running after dark.

## Is the group ticket actually cheaper?

Add the separate eligible fares for the journeys you genuinely intend to make, including useful local connections. Compare the total with the relevant group price. Keep attraction admission, excluded buses and long-distance tickets outside the claimed saving because those costs remain separate.

For a day entirely within one transport association, compare that association's group ticket first. For several days, compare personal subscription conditions and other regional offers carefully. A personal Deutschland-Ticket does not become a group allowance just because its holder travels with friends.

Also compare the timetable. Waiting until 09:00 may be fine for a flexible visit and unsuitable for a fixed morning booking. A lower fare is not useful if it causes the group to miss the reason for travelling. Check the last sensible return before committing to admission times.

## Reservations, changes and disruption

The day ticket is transport permission, not a promise of a reserved seat or space for every bicycle. If seating, accessibility or cycle capacity matters, check the operator and the chosen service separately. Arrive with time for boarding and do not block doors while organising the group.

Ordinary cancellation or exchange of this regional ticket is not offered. Confirm the date and party before paying. DB distinguishes that restriction from cases where passenger rights entitle you to a return or exchange because of disruption; do not confuse a voluntary change with a rights claim.

If services are disrupted, check the specific assistance and replacement transport instructions. Do not assume a delay automatically authorises an ICE journey with the regional ticket. Keep the travel document and relevant disruption information for any later enquiry.

## A final check that takes a minute

Confirm the date and the first valid departure; all paid names and the digital main passenger; second or first class; every train category; any bus exception; the boundary destination; and a realistic return. Keep the actual ticket and identification ready for inspection.

Our [independent trip planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-plan-your-first-independent-trip-from-idea-to-departure/) helps connect fixed reservations with flexible time. For a late finish, the [guide to arranging a late arrival](https://roadme.io/blog/late-night-arrival-how-to-arrange-your-transfer-and-check-in/) helps you plan the part after the final station rather than stopping the plan at the train's arrival.

> With [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io), it is more convenient to work out a complete personal trip around your interests, available time and preferred pace. Plan the experience in the app, then choose the shared ticket and any separate fares that make it practical.

Bayern-Ticket works best when a fixed group, eligible regional transport and the validity hours fit the same day. Check those three things before paying; a large coverage area is useful only when it serves the journey you actually want.
