For a ferry from mainland Spain to the Balearic Islands, choose the island and arrival port before comparing Barcelona, Valencia and Dénia. Then compare the complete journey, including travel to the terminal, accommodation on board and the final drive or transfer. A shorter sea crossing is not automatically the more convenient trip.

On Mallorca, Palma and Alcúdia are different ports. On Menorca, Maó/Mahón and Ciutadella are different destinations. Keep those names in the search rather than treating “Mallorca” or “Menorca” as a single ferry terminal. This guide concerns mainland crossings, not the short Ibiza–Formentera shuttle.

## Start with where you will stay on the island

Save the accommodation address and decide whether you need a vehicle after arrival. A ferry landing close to the intended area may be worth a longer crossing. Conversely, a fast arrival on the other side of an island can leave a substantial final journey.

Compare two complete options with the same travel dates and party. For each, note the mainland terminal, exact island port, vehicle, seat or cabin, arrival date and onward journey. This prevents one attractive headline price from standing in for a different travel arrangement.

> Once your arrival port is chosen, try [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to work out a personalised plan for the whole stay around your interests and pace. The app makes it more convenient to organise the places and experiences you want while leaving room for the crossing and rest.

The island name does not tell you the journey's final cost. Without a car, establish the transfer from the actual passenger exit. With a car, add the drive to the accommodation, parking and any access restrictions that apply to your dates.

## Barcelona, Valencia or Dénia?

| Mainland departure | Connections to compare | Useful question |
| ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Barcelona | Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza services available for the selected date | Which island port and ship type does the booking actually use? |
| Valencia | Palma and Ibiza; other published routes where a real sailing is offered | Does an overnight crossing fit your road journey and rest? |
| Dénia | Ibiza, Formentera and Palma services available on the date | Does the shorter approach from your starting point offset the sea journey? |

Your starting point matters. Driving past a suitable port simply to reduce time at sea can add road time, fuel and fatigue. When arriving by train or plane, compare access to the ferry terminal separately: a city's railway station or airport is not the boarding point.

## Mallorca: Palma and Alcúdia need separate comparisons

Barcelona–Mallorca searches can include different arrival ports and both conventional and high-speed ferries. Confirm Palma or Alcúdia in the final booking. Do not attach a journey time advertised for one product to every service carrying the island's name.

Baleària describes Valencia–Palma as a conventional, often overnight crossing of approximately seven to nine hours. Its Dénia–Palma guide describes about five hours and fifteen minutes, including a short call at Ibiza. These are published route orientations, not guarantees for your selected departure.

A call does not necessarily mean you change vessels, but the booking must establish the actual arrangement. Read whether the itinerary is one service or a connection, and check how the arrival time is shown. Do not assume that “direct” always means “no intermediate port”.

Compare the island road or transfer after each arrival. A person staying near Palma can reasonably choose differently from a family based in the north. The cheapest crossing to the island can lose its advantage once everyone and the luggage reach the hotel.

## Menorca, Ibiza and a mainland ticket to Formentera

For Menorca, read whether the ferry arrives at Maó, also written Mahón, or at Ciutadella. The towns are not interchangeable. Check a real sailing from your chosen mainland port and the current accommodation and vehicle options for that service.

For Ibiza, save the exact arrival terminal and accommodation entrance. The island name alone does not identify every onward journey. If a route description mentions a particular port or town, retain that detail through the search and confirmation.

For Formentera, compare the mainland itinerary as sold: any intermediate call, any change, the vehicle arrangement and the final port. Do not substitute the much shorter crossing from Ibiza for the duration or check-in conditions of a mainland ticket.

## Fast ferry or conventional ship?

A high-speed service may reduce the sea section and suit a daytime journey. Compare the actual seat category, vehicle availability and arrival port. “Fast” is a description of a product, not proof that the whole journey from your starting point is faster.

A conventional ship can offer a night crossing and cabin options. That may fit a long mainland approach or a wish to lie down, provided the booked cabin and schedule genuinely allow useful rest. An overnight ticket does not itself include a bed.

Compare the time when you must leave home with the time when you can enter the accommodation. An early morning arrival can leave several hours before ordinary hotel check-in. Ask about luggage storage or early access rather than assuming the room will be available.

If you are sensitive to motion, consider your own needs and seek appropriate advice where necessary. Do not treat a large ship, a particular season or a marketing promise as a guarantee of a smooth crossing. Operators can change services for sea or operating conditions.

## Seat, cabin and what the accommodation actually includes

Read whether a seat is assigned, reclining or part of a particular lounge. For a cabin, confirm private or shared use, number of berths and the facilities included. A product name such as premium or comfort is not a standard shared by every operator.

Check the number and needs of the passengers against the cabin's capacity. With children, establish how the selected accommodation is booked and whether the arrangement works for sleep and supervision. Do not infer a child's ticket or bed entitlement from an adult headline fare.

On a night crossing, prepare a small bag with the documents, medication, clothing and essentials you will need upstairs. Ask about access to the vehicle area and stored luggage; do not build the plan around returning to the car whenever you wish.

Compare the cabin's full additional cost with the alternative you would actually use. A night aboard may replace a hotel night on the road, but only if both travel arrangements match. Do not automatically count every overnight ferry as free accommodation.

## Taking a car: measure the whole vehicle

Enter the actual vehicle category, length and height during the search. Include relevant roof boxes, racks, loads and trailers according to the operator's booking instructions. The model's standard dimensions may not describe the vehicle you will present at the port.

Baleària asks for make, model, length and height, with special handling for vehicles outside the standard categories. Check an unusual vehicle before purchase. A search result accepting a passenger does not establish that the particular camper, van or trailer has a suitable space.

Keep registration and insurance documents ready and confirm any rental or owner permission for the island journey. The ability to book a ferry space does not override a rental agreement. If a vehicle changes after booking, update the reservation through the operator before travel.

Count the benefit after arrival honestly. A car may help reach accommodation and explore, but also brings parking, fuel and possible local restrictions. For a stay concentrated around one accessible base, compare a pedestrian ticket with local transport or a separately confirmed rental.

## Island vehicle access is a separate check

Before buying a vehicle ticket to Ibiza or Formentera, check the island authority's rules for entry and remaining on the island during your dates. Seasonal authorisations, exemptions and quotas can operate separately from the ferry's garage reservation.

For the 2026 season, Ibiza's official access system and the operator's guidance distinguish several vehicle situations. Do not assume that every return ticket, residence claim or low-emission vehicle follows one identical procedure. Confirm what has been processed and for which registration and dates.

Information checked on 28 October 2026 should not be read as a confirmed 2027 quota or fee. Before a later season, consult the newly applicable rules. A published regulation from an earlier year is not evidence that the same dates or conditions continue unchanged.

For a camper or caravan, check both ferry acceptance and the island's parking and overnight arrangements. Permission to carry a vehicle does not establish permission to camp anywhere. Keep the necessary accommodation or camping reservation aligned with the actual trip.

## Compare the full price for the same passengers

Build each quote with everyone travelling, their correct age categories, the actual vehicle and the chosen seat or cabin. Check whether the displayed total is one-way or return. A pedestrian starting price cannot price a family and car.

Compare the final payable amount and any selected meals, pet accommodation or other extras. Add travel to the terminal and onward transfer. With a car, include road costs; without one, include the actual journey from the passenger terminal to the accommodation.

Some sites show separate resident offers. A language, nationality or holiday address does not automatically establish entitlement. Select a subsidised or discounted category only when you meet its conditions and can provide the required evidence.

Read changes, cancellation and missed-departure terms before paying. A cheaper restrictive ticket can fit a firm plan, while flexibility may matter after a long preceding journey. “Changes allowed” need not mean a free cancellation or no additional fare.

We do not quote a universal “ferry with car” price: route, date, dimensions, party and accommodation change what is being purchased. Comparing two saved complete quotes is more useful than comparing unrelated promotional minimums.

## Check-in depends on the operator and the ticket

Baleària's published general table gives 60 minutes before departure without a vehicle and 90 minutes with one for routes not assigned a special exception. Use the instruction for your precise crossing and direction. The table includes exceptions, so it should not become a rule for all ferries.

For Trasmed or GNV, read their current booking and terminal instructions rather than applying Baleària's times. Online check-in, receiving a boarding pass, arriving at the port and completing boarding are distinct steps. A digital document does not remove the journey through a large port.

Confirm the terminal address and current access for passengers or vehicles. A marina, cruise terminal and ferry terminal may occupy different parts of the same port. Follow the instructions tied to the booking rather than a generic map result for the city harbour.

Leave road or public-transport contingency before the stated presentation time. It is not a target for reaching the city's outskirts. If the flight or train preceding the ferry is delayed, assess the actual connection and contact the operator before assuming the ticket remains usable.

## Documents, luggage and special arrangements

Keep a valid travel document for every passenger, including children, as required by the operator and your circumstances. A domestic sea route does not mean that identity checks disappear. Match the booking names with the documents actually carried.

Read the baggage conditions of the chosen ship and product. The advantage of carrying belongings in a car does not cancel safety restrictions or make every oversized object ordinary luggage. Confirm a bicycle, sports equipment or unusual load before arriving.

For a pet, check both booking and the exact accommodation on the assigned vessel. An allowed animal does not automatically have access to every passenger area. Do not rely on another ship's cabin photo as proof that the same facility is available.

If step-free access or assistance is needed, arrange it with the operator and confirm the whole journey: terminal, boarding, accommodation and exit. A modern vessel alone does not establish that every connection on land is equally accessible.

## Arrival time, weather and the return crossing

Check service updates before setting out and again if the operator changes the departure. Advertised sea times are not promises against weather or port disruption. Keep important onward commitments proportionate to the margin after disembarkation.

Our [late-night arrival guide](https://roadme.io/blog/late-night-arrival-how-to-arrange-your-transfer-and-check-in/) helps if the ferry reaches the island after reception or public transport has finished. Confirm the booked night, entrance and last part of the journey. Reaching the port is not the same as entering the room.

For the return, verify the island terminal, check-in requirement and enough time from your accommodation. A morning departure can require leaving the hotel much earlier than expected. Do not simply reverse the outward journey's assumptions.

Use our [independent trip planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-plan-your-first-independent-trip-from-idea-to-departure/) to connect the sailings with the rest of your stay. Leave the first and last days realistic instead of filling them with visits that depend on an ideal crossing.
