From Athens Airport, Metro Line 3 is useful for a central address near its stations, while the airport express buses offer different city and port connections throughout the night. X95 serves Syntagma, X96 Piraeus, X93 the intercity bus stations and X97 the southern metro connection. A taxi can remove a difficult final transfer, but its fixed central fare has a defined area and time conditions.

Start with the accommodation address, when you can realistically leave arrivals and the last section of the journey. The ordinary city ticket does not cover the airport metro section or airport express buses. Also, Saturday's all-night city metro service does not extend to the airport.

## Choose from the hotel entrance, not just “Athens centre”

Syntagma, Monastiraki, a southern suburb and the port of Piraeus create different arrivals. Save the accommodation's full address and entrance before choosing transport. A direct airport service is useful only if its stop leaves a sensible onward connection or walk.

> Try [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io) to work out the whole personal trip around your interests and pace. Planning the complete stay in the app is more convenient than assembling disconnected ideas, with an arrival that leaves time and energy for the Athens you want to discover.

Check the last walk with luggage. A station that looks close on a map may leave a sloping street, several crossings or an inconvenient entrance. Ask the accommodation which arrival stop it recommends and how you will get in after a delayed flight.

## Metro, express bus or taxi: the practical comparison

| Option | Good reason to choose it | Check first |
| ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------- |
| Metro Line 3 | A useful station in central Athens or towards Piraeus | Airport train hours and the last walk |
| X95 | Syntagma and a suitable central connection | The actual stop and road conditions |
| X96 | Piraeus and the appropriate coastal corridor | The port gate or actual final address |
| X93 | Kifissos or Liossion intercity bus station | Which bus station the onward ticket names |
| X97 | A southern metro connection | Elliniko or the night arrangement at Dafni |
| Taxi or booked car | A difficult final transfer, several bags or a group | Destination zone, time, capacity and pickup |

Compare complete alternatives for the same people and address. Do not compare a bus fare to Syntagma with a car price to a hotel some distance away, leaving the bus's second leg out of the calculation.

## Metro Line 3: follow the actual airport departure

The blue Line 3 connects the airport with central Athens and continues towards Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro. Read the station list for the hotel rather than treating the last stop as the universal destination. Syntagma and Monastiraki serve different central locations.

Follow the airport's train signs and allow time to reach the station, obtain the right ticket and find the platform. Landing time is not train boarding time: baggage, arrival formalities and the station approach all happen before departure.

Airport trains do not have the same frequency as trains on the inner-city section. Check a dated airport departure instead of applying the short city interval to the whole line. Do the same on the way home; a frequent blue-line train is not necessarily going to the airport.

For the return, look for the destination Airport. Some Line 3 services finish at Doukissis Plakentias. The line colour alone is insufficient, and boarding a terminating city service does not guarantee an immediate airport connection afterwards.

## The airport metro fare and the ninety-minute window

At the check date of 28 October 2026, the adult airport metro single costs €9\. The airport metro return costs €16 and is valid for thirty days under the product's conditions. It is not the old forty-eight-hour return described in some travel guides.

The airport metro ticket provides ninety minutes on the applicable OASA urban network from first validation. Airport express buses and X80 are excluded. This can help with an ordinary onward city connection, but does not turn a metro purchase into an interchangeable airport bus ticket.

For a second metro or other covered urban leg, stay within the ticket's actual validity and follow the required validation process. A long break for food or hotel errands can consume the window. If the entitlement has expired, buy the appropriate onward ticket.

Ordinary city day and five-day tickets do not include the airport journey. Read “airport” in the product description rather than assuming that a city pass covers every station reached by the same train.

## Bankcard payment: use the same card or device

OASA's contactless system supports full-fare airport metro and express-bus journeys. On the metro, touch in and touch out with exactly the same physical card or device. A bankcard and the corresponding card in a phone wallet are different payment media for this purpose.

Do not start the trip with the physical card and finish with the phone because both draw from the same account. Keep the chosen method accessible until you have completed the exit procedure, with enough phone battery if using a digital wallet.

Separate the bankcard from an ATH.ENA ticket or card before presenting either. Holding the whole wallet against the reader can trigger the wrong purchase or cause confusion. If travelling with a purchased transport ticket, use that ticket according to its own instructions.

Bankcard contactless pays supported full fares. Do not assume repeated taps automatically buy the €16 airport return or the €20 tourist product. Choose a specific return or tourist ticket deliberately when that product suits the trip.

Reduced fares have their own eligibility and documentation requirements. A student label on a foreign card does not by itself establish a discount, and a normal bankcard tap does not apply a reduced airport fare. Check the category before buying.

## Airport express buses: four different destinations

The adult airport express bus ticket is €5.50 for one journey. It does not include an extra metro or ordinary city-bus journey. If the hotel needs another paid leg, add that ticket before comparing the bus with the airport metro product.

X95 is the central connection to Syntagma. It can be straightforward for a nearby address, including at night, but it does not deliver every passenger to their hotel door. Check the last walking section and the current boarding point for the return.

X96 serves Piraeus. X93 serves the Kifissos and Liossion intercity bus stations; those are not the same place. Read the station printed on the onward booking rather than taking a bus because the words “bus station” appear in its description.

X97 connects with the southern metro area at Elliniko, with a night arrangement at Dafni. Check the actual departure and terminus for your travel time. It is not a second Syntagma express, and its name does not promise a direct journey to every southern hotel.

All four airport express routes operate around the clock, with their own timetables. At night, look up the appropriate one rather than assuming X95 is the only public option. Twenty-four-hour operation does not mean identical frequency throughout the night.

## Buying and using a bus ticket

Use the current sales point or ticket machine and check that the selected product is the airport express fare. Airport express ticket sales are available by the departure area. Do not rely on an unconfirmed promise that a driver will sell the required ticket for cash.

For bankcard travel, follow the boarding reader procedure with the chosen card or device. The metro's entrance-and-exit process is not a reason to add a second bus purchase at the end. Keep the payment medium available if required for inspection.

Airport express services have boarding and alighting restrictions and are intended for airport journeys. They are not ordinary local buses for moving between arbitrary city stops. Check the permitted stop for the direction you need.

Traffic makes a road journey variable. A quoted vehicle travel time is not a guarantee for a tightly timed ferry, intercity bus or flight. Add the walk to the onward departure and a margin for actual road conditions.

## Late arrival: the airport metro is not all night

Athens has a Saturday all-night arrangement for parts of the city metro, but STASY explicitly excludes airport services. Do not plan a Saturday-night airport ride from the general headline that Lines 2 and 3 run twenty-four hours.

Search from the airport at the time you expect to reach the station. If the last relevant train has gone, compare an actual express-bus departure and a taxi or booked car. A city train still running elsewhere does not restore the airport section.

Coordinate the transfer with accommodation access. Our [guide to late arrivals and check-in](https://roadme.io/blog/late-night-arrival-how-to-arrange-your-transfer-and-check-in/) helps connect the arrival time, room entry and a backup. Save a contact method before leaving the terminal, especially if reception is not staffed all night.

For an early flight, work backwards from the required airport arrival time, allowing for the airline's procedures. Check the departure from your city stop, not just the first train leaving a distant terminus.

## Taxi: the fixed fare has a boundary and an arrival-time rule

The airport lists a twenty-four-hour taxi service at the designated rank outside Arrivals Exit 3\. Use the actual rank and confirm the destination before departure. A prebooked car can have a different meeting point, which must come from its booking instructions.

The published fixed taxi fare between the airport and central Athens' inner-ring area is €50 for the daytime band, 05:00 to midnight, and €65 from midnight to 05:00\. These are prices for the vehicle, not for each passenger.

The applicable band depends on arrival time at the destination. A ride beginning before midnight can therefore fall into the night fare if it arrives after midnight. Ask about this when comparing a late arrival, rather than judging from the moment you entered the car.

The fixed rate includes the applicable extras described by the airport. It applies to the defined central area, not every address marketed as “Athens” and not automatically to Piraeus. Confirm whether the actual hotel is within the zone, request the receipt and check the agreed basis for other destinations.

For a group, compare the whole vehicle with all eligible public tickets and the final transfer. Confirm luggage capacity and any child equipment first. A low displayed car price is not useful if the booked vehicle cannot carry the party.

## Piraeus, the suburban railway and the wrong-port mistake

Both Metro Line 3 and the suburban railway provide airport links towards Piraeus, but they are different services. The suburban railway also serves the Athens railway station at Larissis for relevant onward rail connections. Check the service and station names on the actual journey.

Piraeus is a large port. Reaching a station called Piraeus does not place you beside every ferry gate. Read the shipping company's departure port, terminal or gate and allow time to cover that final section with luggage.

Rafina and Lavrio are different ports. X96 to Piraeus is not the answer to a ferry leaving either of them. Check the correct regional connection or car option for the named port instead of using “Athens ferry port” as a single destination.

## When the tourist ticket is worth comparing

The €20 three-day tourist product covers three periods of twenty-four hours and includes the specified airport outward and return journeys by metro or airport express, plus the covered urban network. It does not give unlimited airport transfers.

Both airport journeys must fit the product's active conditions and validity. A longer stay can make an airport metro return or separate tickets more appropriate. Compare the travel you will actually use rather than buying a tourist ticket only because its name sounds comprehensive.

Keep the arrival choice with flight, hotel and return details; our [independent travel planning guide](https://roadme.io/blog/how-to-plan-your-first-independent-trip-from-idea-to-departure/) helps organise those decisions. Note the selected airport fare, useful city stop and backup if the expected departure is missed.

> With [RoadMe](https://roadme.io/?ref=roadme.io), it is more convenient to work out a complete personal plan around the places, interests and pace that matter to you. Try planning the Athens stay in the app so the airport connection supports the whole trip rather than dictating it.

Choose a useful metro station within airport operating hours, an express bus towards the right destination at night, or a car for the actual door. The correct ticket and manageable last section matter more than a single attractive headline fare.
